Ángel Faraldo: I miss you

image

“I Miss You” was recorded in The Hague, The Netherlands, during the months of May and June 2009. All tracks are complete (uncut) live improvisations performed with my MISS computer-based instrument* without further additions. Nevertheless, the six tracks presented intend to create a compact work, an exploration of some peculiarities of the instrument.

The tracks contained in this work are, in a way, incomplete. They were recorded by directly connecting the output of the digital synthesizer MISS to a recording software running in the same computer. Therefore, the music here contained never met any real space, and the many places, loudspeakers and rooms where it will be played back will influence and complete the work in as many different ways.

Ángel Faraldo

“I Miss You” provides an experience of elegant electronic textures. Digital sounds resulting from the interaction between the individual and the machine. Instants, emotions and impulses transformed into music through the common language of mathematics and the craft of digital instrument design.

After his first release with Yolanda Uriz and a wide experience improvising with a number of musicians, Ángel Faraldo presents “I miss you”, his first solo work with his computer-based environment for musical free improvisation MISS.

Arklight : Revalued

image

Arklight hail from Astoria, New York, USA.

Any (cultural) doctor will tell you, it is easier to diagnose an ill than to cure it. So some will (Ho Hum) learn to the love the disease, while others will (Hum Drum) rail against it with extreme prejudice. Arklight neither love “Him” nor hate “Him” (When A Woman Ascends The Stairs) They Are Contradictory In Tone (T.A.C.I.T.) At a certain point a band must manufacture its own image/mystery(revealed)/allure. We have an album available from the itunes if you click the button below. Various Artists : Circles Around The World

image

Circles Around The World is a various artists compilation that can be seen as a celebration of the 25th release in Audiotalaia Netlabel. Over this two years of work we have been releasing works from artist all around the world. For this special occasion we want to deliver a gathering of works under a common concept.

We asked the artists to work under certain premises. We asked them to try to portray some concepts or ideas on those pieces. Those concepts were based on the idea of a circle or cycle around the world, a journey across countries and cultures. The artists have been working on those ideas from the sonic point of view. Some of them have delivered tracks that represent features from the regions where they live. Some others have based their sound on travelling literature translating text into music. Some others have been working on soundscapes and sonic structures from their territory.

All together the compilation becomes a journey across the world, a conjunction of spaces, structures and scapes from all over the world. All of them are a representation of the thoughts and interests of each artist and their own perspective of the world.

Thanos Chrysakis, Wade Matthews, Dario Bernal-Villegas : ENANTIO_DROMIA

image

Thanos Chrysakis’ output consists of composition, performance, and installation. He was born in Athens in 1971, residing for the last ten years in the UK. His work has appeared on various independent labels, and events in various countries. He composes for electronics, acoustic instruments and environmental sounds, focusing on the structural and aesthetic capacity of sonic matter. His work “Inscape 5” was amongst the selected works at the International Competition de Musique et d’Art Sonore Electroacoustiques de Bourges 2005, in the category œuvre d’art sonore électroacoustique, while “Nekyomanteion” received an honorary mention at the 7th International Electroacoustic Competition Musica Viva in Lisbon. Recent compositions include: A Scar In The Air (Aural Terrains 2008), “Threadshelters” for prepared piano + harpsichord (for Kate Ryder and Jane Chapman, 2007), and “Passage Dangereux” for prepared and toy piano, soundscape + video (for Kate Ryder, 2008). In addition to his compositional activities he has recorded/performed with Dario Bernal-Villegas, Wade Matthews, Oli Mayne, James O’Sullivan, Jerry Wigens among others.

Advanced academic studies in composition helped French-born American musician Wade Matthews realize he was not interested in telling other people what or how to play. In 1989, he moved from New York to Madrid and became part of the international improv community. Drawing on his knowledge of electronic music, he approached the bass clarinet and alto flute as “acoustic synthesizers,” rethinking their sonic possibilities, phrasing, and relation to breath in a musical language based on real-time creation. When faster processors made laptop synthesis viable, Matthews returned to his first love, tweaking a virtual synthesizer to allow very rapid control of sound parameters for solo playing and dialog with others. In 2007, he founded INTERMEDIA 28 with photographer Adam Lubroth and guitarist Julio Camarena << www.myspace.com/intermedia28 >>. There, he began to combine field recordings with electronic synthesis in a 2-computer setup that has since become his main instrument.

Darío Bernal-Villegas is a composer, improviser and drummer from Mexico City. Improvisation has been an essential part in his work as composer and performer. Many of his pieces deal with improvisation, as his aim is to create an intense, creative interaction between the performer and the score; in other words, creating the conditions for a more intense dialogue between the performer and the composer. As an improviser he has worked with musicians like Raúl Tudón, (Tambuco Percussion Group, México), Wade Matthews (USA, Spain) Thanos Chrysakis (Greece), Sebastian Lexer (Germany) Oli Mayne (UK), David Plans Casal (Spain) among others. Nowadays, he is working with the Mexican improvising collective Generación Espontánea and with the composer Tom Corona in his group “The Coming Burguers”

Ark : Musique Electro – Acoustique

image

Electro – acoustic composition for 2 pianos and laptop.

ARK is articulated around Nathalie Huber and Coralie Lonfat’s compositions with 2 pianos and a laptop. Arrangements present rhythmic and harmonic superpositions, impromptu parts and the exploration of sound textures. The idea is to bring closer the jazz and pop harmonies to the eclecticism of modern music and to add electronic sound effects to acoustics. “Modules”, concept of short, radical and experimental pieces come to be intercalated between the longer compositions. The artists such as Sylvie Courvoisier, Enrico Pieranunzi, Esbjörn Svensson, Tori Amos, Björk, Ellery Eskelin, John Cage and Philip Glass influenced the musical universe of ARK. The project also took as a starting point the colors and forms of Tinguely, Niki de Saint Phalle, Magritte, Aloise and the poetic humor of Paul Eluard and Christian Morgenstern. And if current sonorities of data processing got married with two acoustic instruments ? And if the humor of modern music met the poetry of ARK ? And if the freedom of ARK were that of a free swimmer in water… ?

ARK – Nathalie Huber & Coralie Lonfat

NATHALIE HUBER, born in Fribourg (CH) in 1979, studied piano at the
Academy of Fribourg with Veronique Piller. She obtained her composition and
arrangement diploma in 2004. She attended the classes of François Allaz, Claude
Buri, the workshops of Popol Lavanchy, Jean-Christophe Chollet and she took an
active part in the projects of URBAINES, Festival of emergent creations in Lausanne – CH), at the time which she carried out with Samuel Blaser the composition ENGELMASCHINE for 30 musicians (a whole of traditional musicians and jazz directed by Carlos Baumann). As well as that Nathalie obtained the first price of composition organized by the EJMA (Lausanne), she also wrote several parts for quartet, quintet and 10et. She accompanies choruses, singers and takes part of several formations in duet (with sax or flute).

CORALIE LONFAT, born in Lausanne (CH) in 1980, studied classical
piano during ten years. Then she took a bigger interest in jazz. She followed the professional classes at the EJMA (Lausanne) and obtained a diploma in piano studies in 2004 and a diploma in composition and arrangement in 2005.

She benefited from the piano courses of Thierry Lang in the Academy of Montreux, then of Michel Bastet in Geneva. She studied composition with François Allaz and Claude Buri, took part in the workshops of Jean – Christophe Chollet, Popol Lavanchy, Mathias Demoulin, François Lindemann, a.o.
She followed several workshops in France, in particular with the pianist Eric Moulin. Coralie wrote several parts played in quartet, quintet and 10tet.

STRONGLY IMPLODED: Why Use A Proxy?

image

A release from the Ikuisuus-label (Finland). Strongly Imploded is a group of four people who don’t reveal their real names. They play reeds, guitar, drums, glockenspiel, electronics, synth and bells. They come from different musical backgrounds and decided to start Strongly Imploded as an laboratory for new musical experiments. And experiment is what they do. They recorded this CDR in 2008 in Napoli, Italy, so I suppose it is an italian combo. In their radical improvisations they mix sources of acoustic and electronic origin. In the quiet and open passages their music fails to attract attention. However in the extravert and loud parts of the improvisations they do. There are some very enjoyable cacaphonic and furious minutes to enjoy here. Also they know how to built up a piece of improvised music. They are relatively new in this business if you ask me, but eager to learn more, as can be deduced from their dedicated playing. (DM) Vital Weekly 695

TRESBASS : filderen

image

What a delicate affair – this trio of deep tones. Puzzled out and ingeniously intertwining many loose ends, piled up layer upon layer, vaguely recalling local folklore or something from far away – who did not go eastwards? Flying into passion too, avoiding any polish – a lot of skipping dance.

For all the complexity of the themes they are accessible to the ears. Softly whispering, nearly cajoling, they nestle down before you can defend yourself against them.
These three people understand perfectly how to bring the substances of the primary material out in the light, improvising, stemming their lines against the wind, throwing out their nets, having packed into their bags a good piece of love and an irresistible urge for a three-star unity – romanticism in its best literal sense is not far away here…!

IKER ORMAZABAL : Sesiones Acusticas

image

Iker Ormazábal, from the Iberian territory, has dropped here a very personal collection of sounds.

Melting dirty noises with dark ambiences and faulty electronics in quite a slow motion and unhappy development. Dead emotions and depressive static droney passages using micro-sound, minimalistic perversion and looping techniques to paint an unconventionally dusty and devastated landscape.

slow : dual box

image

You might remember slow by his “room phive”-release on Resting Bell last December, or for the “Love”-EP on Autoplate. If not, slow is the moniker of Sergey Suokas, a russian composer in the fields of techno (as Suokas) and soulful and hypnotic ambient-music (as slow).

His new release “dual box“ can be seen as a meditation on the “Flower of Life“. This geometrical figure is a composition of multiple evenly-spaced, overlapping circles, that are arranged so that they form a flower-like pattern with a sixfold symmetry like a hexagon. In combination with triangles and cubes you get a sacred geometry which has references in most of the commons religions and spiritual ways.

Every single track on “dual box“ is dedicated to a circle in the geometrical figure. Starting with “chinatown“, you get from a very clam and percussive piece to warm multiple guitar-layers, repetitive synth-elements and little miniature compositions. A beautiful and complete concept.

And not to forget: Ian Hawgood mastered this release with calm hands and very sensitive ears.
Thanks a lot for your work, Ian.
