Eucci Storm : Summer Sunhill

nt105 8-2007

Eucci has never stopped making music since his beginnings as part of mythical noise ensemble The Audio ELW. This Salt Lake City based composer (real name Jeffrey P Shell) has made two albums for No Type, plus a soundtrack for Sine Fiction, but mostly he produced many other projects in relative obscurity, mostly for his own homegrown label, Rive. So if he comes back today, it’s not because he has an outtake for two to spare. Oh boy no. Storm Summer Sunhill is a highly satisfying 51 minute full-length, perhaps his best album to date, a listening experience that goes from the most intriguing experiments to the most visceral ambiences, not to forget some ingenious borrowings from drum ‘n bass or pop music. In a word, Eucci’s newest effort is powerful stuff yet it’s far more refined than you may think…

Written and Recorded Dec 2006 – Jul 2007 by J. Shell for Eucci at Sunhill Studios.

ry-om: laptops and guitars: electronic noise and acoustic soundscapes

ry-om are a London-based two-piece, and consist of Tom Shelton and Ryo Ikeshiro. Using laptops, guitars, feedback loops, synths, instrumental samples and vocals, they create electronic noise and acoustic soundscapes. All music is improvised and performed live without sequencing, and varies from pulses to irregular rhythms, tonality to dissonance, digital glitches to acoustic instruments, and rich, reverb-drenched textures to austere, upfront bleeps. The result is somewhere between electronica, noise and electroacoustic music

The Cherry Blues Project : Nuevos Mundos en el Oceano

8-2007

“Nuevos Mundos en el Ocano” (New Worlds in the Ocean) is a compilation of tracks that originally appeared in two albums: “Canciones de Nuevos Mundos” (Songs of New Worlds) y “Ocean”.

This is, essentially, an “ambient” album, containing some of The Cherry Blues Project’s calmer and softer tracks. This album was made to be played at night, with the rain falling.

This album was compiled with the intention to show one of the many sides of The Cherry Blues Project; the calmer and warmer aspect of the band, contrasting with many of their harder albums and styles.

“Nuevos Mundos en el Ocano” evokes water and the life revolving around it. Drowning and swimming in new worlds; Worlds created by The Cherry Blues Project.

Tracks:

1. Drowning in Your Ocean [05:53]

2. Un Viaje al Interior de tu Mente [08:05]

3. New [06:18]

4. Te Aguillotinas (Acoustic Remix) [02:22]

5. Maana [03:41]

6. ngel [01:10]

7. Crying [11:20]

8. Un Viaje al Interior de tu Mente (Reprise) [02:18]

C.P. McDill – Anthology 1

C.P. McDill – Anthology 1

Sound artist C. P. McDill may be one of the busiest musicians on the internet. Aside from running the excellent netlabel Webbed Hands Record, he involves himself in several intriguing musical projects. While all of them feature electronics and sampling, they each have their own personalities. The projects and their albums can be found on his own net label but finally there is an anthology that gives the listener a chance to sample each one. Anthology 1 offers tracks from 1993 to 2005 and reveals an ever searching artist thathas a talent for finding the right sample for the right effect.

The first experiment from 1993 doesn’t do much for me but that immediately changes with 2002′s “Macedoine” from Rolling Calf Sinfonette. It is a pulsing mix of industrial percussion and middle eastern sounds that grab you instantly. The stage turns to what appears to be McDill’s main project, Saluki Regicide. The six tracks are generally quiet and mysterious soundscapes with drifting sonorities and a whispering of world beats. Rowboat Musician is the most techno sounding project while Tree Helicopter’s two tracks are more other worldly with “Poacher” being like a child’s dream threatening to become a nightmare . Djinnestan specializes in drones and is the similar in sound to McDill’s excellent Rain series. Finally, Akashic Crow’s Nest experiments in sounds generated from images resulting in beautiful minimalist and trance inducing music.

Overall, the collection makes some excellent picks to bring together McDill’s various experiments into a coherent whole. The best advice is to listen to this CD, which hold up well on its own, but then go to Webbed Hands’ vast catalog and experience the other CDs of McDill and his projects.

There is no such thing as art, it’s a romantic fairy-tale told by geeks with fashion haircuts. Art creates, fashions, sharpens, and carries it’s own unique burden. It’s creation is it’s demise, as soon as integrity is found, it is cloned and commodified, passed into larger streams of consciousness, made insincere. Whoever said that imitation is flattery was only partially correct. I am using worn tools to end my pregnancy.

Note: I support anybody whose art is not tamed by their integrity, whose substance is not altered by their influence, and whose character cannot be judged by predisposition. Also, any “musicians” with commodified sound (you know who you are), feel free to please leave criticism, for I criticize you daily.

Fourth meeting between Esa (multimedia artist based in Vicenza) and Sine3pm. This is a work made in full collaboration with experimental artist Adrian Juarez (based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, www.adrianjuarez.com). Monochrome.Landscape is a suite splitted into two equal duration parts of rarefied but intense sonorities. The artists cohoperate with wisdom and equilbrium merging melodies, reverbs and concret sounds with a solid but soft maturity.

K.M. Krebs – The Light Will Fill the Darkness and Obliterate It

[wh065] 2003

The Light Will Fill the Darkness and Obliterate It is a poetic and richly textured work by Canadian sound artist K.M. Krebs. These tracks are blended together into a shifting exploration as evocative and powerful as the titles they bear. I find this to be excellent headphone music, and with eyes closed I am easily abducted into very strange realms.

K.M. Krebs has become a well-known and respected artist in the netlabel scene. As K.M. Krebs he recorded the classic “Halberd of Chemistry” (available at Fukk God Records), and as 833-45 he recorded “Solar Cycle 23″ which is a popular release at Autoplate Records. His previous release on Webbed Hand is Oneiromancy. Check out the numerous other netlabel and CD-R releases in his discography at http://www.833-45.net/

Pocka – Meditative Cycles Part I

[treetrunk029] (August 14, 2007)

“For the past few months I’ve been working on a series of recordings that are based from and intended for use w/ meditation. All sounds are created from simple sine wave generators and white noise, and layered on top of one another in certain cycles and slowly changing frequencies. My goal for these pieces is for each one to be about 30 minutes long, and it is slowly evolving into a series of recordings. And I figured I would like to share these pieces with others. . . and I instantly thought of Treetrunk. . .” – Brad Mitchell, Pocka

Treetrunk was especially impressed with the hypnotic quality of these recordings. Perfect for meditation, perfect for Treetrunk!

A recorded preparation for the ‘Sty P Landet’-festival in Selbu, Norway, 22/23 June ’07″

Jan-M. Iversen, known for his net and record label TiBPprod, have several releases behind him. On this release he outline a preparation for a live performance, a long composition of abstract noise and soft ambiance.

“I Have once read that the surrealism movement tried to establish connections where none before have thought to find them. Listening to “Sty P Landet, Rehearsal.” makes me think of that statement once again, but in a another way. This time Jan-M. Iversen destroy connections where everyone takes them for granted. He makes the details important and makes the overlooked and the things forgotten a new and more beautiful significance.”

Uexkull is an early work by the Polish composer of noise and experimental music, Zbigniew Karkowski. It was composed in 1988-89 and released as a CD in 1990. It has been out of print until being re-released by the Audio Tong netlabel as a free and legal online album.

This is essentially a drone work lasting an hour. Double bass mingles with electronic sounds to create a very minimalist work. The composition also features the alto voice of Karin Westman but, to be honest, I couldn’t tell you exactly where. Patient listening will reveal subtle but vast layers of songs with surprising changes and intensity. The piece starts quietly but slowly develops into a tapestry of industrial s

Self-preservation intact with teeth

tube085 (August 6, 2007)

Since making his debut appearance on netlabel Con-v in late 2005, Christopher McFall has been steadfastly expanding his discography. Following additional virtual releases on Filament Recordings, Laboratoire Moderne, Alg-a, and Clinical Archives, he now brings a single extended soundscape of meticulously sculptured sounds and evolving textures abstrusely titled “Self-Preservation Intact With Teeth” to netlabel Test Tube.

A prcis of Christopher’s distinctive compositional style reads something like this: Using analogue field recordings collected from his home base in metropolitan Kansas City, Missouri USA, Christopher deliberately extracts segments of the source material and artfully processes them into digital metaphors of urban sounds, reassembling them into multilayered, richly detailed compositions of abstract sound art. Expanding on this in his own words (as quoted from his Myspace site), the impetus behind Christopher’s compositions “revolve around the desire to manipulate/engineer recorded aspects of the macroscopic world around him into a microscopic mosaic.”

I’ll label “Self-Preservation Intact With Teeth” (as well as Christopher’s other works) as ambient but with qualification: This is not pastoral ambient of the easy listening, organic, or spacious genres. This is abstract ambient born of mundane, urban environmental sounds – complex, gritty, and close-up – although, if you listen carefully, there are segments in which Christopher does cleverly manage to coax some amazingly melodious sounds from such unmusical source material.

If you’re not familiar with Christopher’s work, then “Self-Preservation Intact With Teeth” is the perfect composition with which to become acquainted (and, for those of you that are – well, you have an idea of the excellent listening that lies just ahead of you). – Larry Johnson

Takeshi Nakamura – Strange Animals

NTT046

Takeshi Nakamura, who’s been making quite the name for himself on various netlabels (Zymogen, Digital Biotope, Play-Code, …), can certainly be relied upon should you be looking for avant-garde sonic investigations.

“Strange Animals” is made of curious harmonics that were meticulously assembled through what i would guess are alien Max/msp or Reaktor patches. The tracks’ structures are at first hard to identify as most of the rhythms are quite unorthodox, until (in some cases) a more familiar rhythm manages to put ongoing sounds in a new perspective. Other tracks show an equally glitchy approach to sounddesign and do not fail to present the listener with the most peculiar soundenvironments.

If anything this release is not easy-listening, but the execution of it all is interesting, original and entertaining. I for one will continue to watch mister Nakamura as he steadily continues his path towards glitchmastery.

Thanks to David Deschuyteneer (Ronny Ragtroll / Affective Disorder) for the pixels.

“Oneiromancy (the art of foretelling the future through dreams) is an hypnotic ambient journey through the underworld of the unconscious and the dreams which abide therein.”

–K.M. Krebs

Originally a CD-R release, this ambient trek by Canadian sound artist K.M. Krebs is now a netlabel release on Webbed Hand. Distinguished not only by the remarkable sounds herein, but also very evocative track titles, complemented by detail-rich cover art, this is the sort of album one can spend a lot of time listening to and reflecting on.

Lest I risk redundancy though, allow me to direct your attention to the review in the “Notes” section of this page (below), which describes the album better than I could.

K.M. Krebs has become a well-known and respected artist in the netlabel scene. As K.M. Review:

By Jeremy Keens of Ampersand etcetra Music Newsletter

With ‘Oneiromancy’ we seem to shift into the world of dreams suggested by the title (using dreams for prophecy). Again, there is a beautifully seamless mix, each track extending into the next, and themes seeming to recur. The voice is present, but more distant, less frequent, subsumed into the dreamscape. The ‘Vapour of immense extent’ and ‘The seven canons’ form balancing counterpoints for this excursion – they are based around ambient samples with dark tones: water, walking, rumbles and cars in the first; birds, water, shouting in the second. The anchors of the realworld from which the dream suspends.

The body of the album is a hypnotic exploration of dense and complex tones and drones: ‘The approach of rust’ exemplifying it with ringing dramatic tones underscored by a woobling which gradually settles down; the clatter of a multitude of shopping trolleys, shifting to a gentle crackling running water with cycling tones in ‘Emperor of cartography’. Shifting ebbs and flows of ‘Between the firmament and our earth’ with distant voices that become a crowd, buzz saws that come and go, in a static play with tones that is always moving towards its shuddering echoed end. The tone from that continues into ‘The evaporation of numberless subjects’ where it becomes more voicelike and plies beside some chattering, strings and pulsing: a knocking noise, horn blows and a vent blows through into ‘In a warm room facing south’ which rumbles with water, swirling tones and waves.

‘Metallic kingdom’ layers metal tones into a choir, and adds pulses into a deep sensual slow piece, the watery end opening ‘Moisture of metals’ (the plane I heard here was actually outside but fitted in perfectly) becoming an organ, more rumbling, higher tones and ringingstrike pushing it forward. The slow ringing is taken up by ‘The testimony of the sea’ that is joined by a pulsing chant and shimmering tone, with more voices in it. The light tone of ‘Bruising of the serpent’s head’ is overlaid by a big reverberating deep one with little ringings inside, occasional pulses of voice are subsidiary elements, shifting into a woodblock percussion that then underlies ‘Concealing the great stone’ which also features echoed voices and an orchestral drone that slides into the waters of ‘The seven canons’.

A different environment to the ‘Solar Cycle 23′, depending on a richer tonal base, more stability and a certain lightness. Both are excellent albums with depths, secrets and entertainment aplenty.
