Starting out from what could be described as a ?textural guitar drone scene?, this duo explores the possibilities of such a medium using a greater scope in terms of spatialization and processing. The harsh, extended character spreads in sweeping strokes, featuring a greater experimental set of techniques, less based on real time instrumental performance and thus allowing a greater sophistication and variation in sound processing. The second track presents a more experimental approach ?featuring a casual, accidental attitude as well as a wide palette of sound sources- to the composition of materials as well as a thoroughly refreshing outlook, allowing space to be defined through the absence of sound rather than by featuring large amounts of materials.

Partiendo de lo que podra describirse como un ?panorama textural de guitarra pedal?, este do explora las posibilidades de semejante medio utilizando un criterio ms amplio en cuanto a espacializacin y procesado. El carcter duro, ampliado se difunde en amplias pinceladas, que incluyen un abanico de tcnicas ms experimentales, menos vinculadas a la ejecucin instrumental en tiempo real y que permiten una mayor sofisticacin y variacin en el procesado sonoro. El segundo corte presenta un planteamiento ms experimental ?con una actitud desenfadada, proclive al accidente as como una paleta ms amplia de fuentes sonoras- en relacin a la composicin de los materiales as como una mirada totalmente nueva, permitiendo que el espacio se rellene mediante la ausencia de sonido antes que por inclusion de grandes dosis de materiales.

Heddy boubaker:

After exploring a lot of musical way on guitare and as autodidacte, Heddy Boubaker, currently living near Toulouse (F), fall in love with the saxophone. And from jazz to free-jazz, he approch to the deep form of improvised music, crossing the way of musician as L Quan Ninh, Barre Phillips, Sbastien Cirotteau or Fabien Duscomb, develloping a sound where meet rivers, falls, wind in the trees, murmurs or crash of the city, the false silence of an old sleepy house, cracking of the wood and squealing of the gravel under the steps of phlegmatic walkers, mooings, squealings and whistles of phantasmagoric animals… all of this imaginary, imagined, unimaginable sounds who are connected freely in an unceasingly renewed poetry.

He is also organising concert in “”La Maison Peinte” in Labarthe sur Lze.

Nusch Werchowska:

Nusch Werchowska is, since her meeting with Barre Phillips in 1993, unconditional of the improvisation; a pianist able to restore a conversation between Debussy and Cecil Taylor. With a rare determination, it goes its way, leaving with its continuation a sober and energetic sound poetry. She is organizing “smaller festival of France underground”: the Zieu-M-Zic meetings. She plays with Mathias Pontvia, Arrington de Dyoniso, Guillaume Viltard, Arnaud Debreu, Isabelle Frmin.

Mathieu Werchowski:

Diplomed of violin to the C.N.R of Grenoble in 1989, practice this instrument principaly in improvised contexts. Play in solo or with Lionel Marchetti, Jerme Noetinger, Ute Volker, John Russel, Anne Julie Rollet, ensemble Archipel, ensemble NODAL, Le Cube…Is intervening at the Higher School of Art of Grenoble. Compose electroacoustics pieces and for spectacle.

A collective approach to the development of extended drone textures created by means of electric guitars. Featuring a dense flow of pulsating, transparent veils, the superimposition of overtones and processed fabrics creates a complex dome of continuous noise. The vault?s nerves become increasingly close, layers getting thicker, their continuous character contributing to add to the density of the whole although the careful process of addition unfolds according to a calculated plan. The immediate reminiscences of the materials ?such as harshness and protest- are here counterbalanced by the extreme subtlety with which the sounds are handled. More importantly, they subtly hint at the fragility beneath the complex veil of abstract noise, which simultaneously states an almost trance-like recurrence of rhythmic statements of collective celebration/cry.

Un acercamiento colectivo al desarrollo de amplias texturas pedal creadas mediante guitarras elctricas. Con un denso flujo de velos transparentes, de fuerte latido, la superposicin de armnicos y tejidos procesados crea una compleja cpula de ruido continuo. Los nervios de la bveda se van acercando cada vez ms, las capas se vuelven ms densas, mientras su carcter continuo contribuye a incrementear la densidad del conjunto si bien el cuidadoso proceso de adicin ocurre segn un plan cuidadoso. Las reminiscencias inmediatas de los materiales ?como la dureza y la denuncia- se ven contrarrestados por la extrema sutileza con la que estos son manejados. De mayor importancia es la sutil alusin a la fragilidad que subyace al complejo velo de ruido abstracto, que afirma de forma simultnea la repeticin de frases rtmicas ?afines al trance- de celebracin/grito colectivo.

A careful work exploring the possibilities of continuous electric guitar drones developed over extended periods of time. Featuring smooth transitions between the different sound masses, the static character is the result of a careful mastery; the balance involved in handling feedback being akin to that of high-tension wires. Quite subtle in its approach, the materials are displayed with a certain Indian tanpura quality in the slow unfolding of overtones. Other tracks present harsher surfaces, with noise elements that emphasize rougher textures and larger doses of processing.

Un cuidadoso trabajo que explora las posibilidades de pedales continuos de guitarra elctrica desarrollados durante amplios periodos de tiempo. Caracterizada por las suaves transiciones entre las diferentes masas sonoras, el carcter esttico resulta de una cuidada maestra, ya que la habilidad implcita en el manejo de acoples es semejante a la manipulacin de cables de alta tensin. De planteamiento sutil, los materiales ofrecen un cierto parecido con la tambura India en lo tocante a su lento despliegue armnico. Otros cortes presentan superficies ms speras, con elementos ruidistas que enfatizan texturas ms bastas y una mayor dosis de procesado.

A sextet inhabiting a realm partly modern jazz and partly contemporary chamber music (as instanced by melodic choices), managing a balance between compositions and performance, where interactive subtlety exists together with complex arrangements. The various scenes visited in this journey include straightforward rhythm sections of jazz ascendancy, modern chamber harmonies and arrangements, extended instrumental techniques, free-jazz, free improvisation or atmospheric passages. The ensemble?s nimbleness proves particularly striking, as all manner of atmospheres are visited -featuring various moods- and the different soloists play before atmospheric or cyclic rhythmic backgrounds.

Un sexteto que habita un mundo a medio camino entre el jazz moderno y la contempornea (como refleja la eleccin de melodas), logrando un equilibrio entre composicin y ejecucin, en el que la sutileza interactiva coexiste con los arreglos complejos. Las diversas escenas recorridas en este viaje incluyen secciones rtmicas propias del jazz convencional, armonas y arreglos de cmara contemporneos, tcnicas instrumentales ampliadas, free-jazz, improvisacin libre o pasajes atmosfricos. La agilidad del grupo resulta tanto ms sorprendente segn se van visitando toda suerte de atmsferas, con diversos ambientes y permitiendo a los solistas tocar ante fondos atmosfricos o cclicos a nivel rtmico.

Distorsion processed electronic sources progressively give way to denser texture of various other materials featuring all maner of idiomatic, mediatic, music samples and instrumental processings that contribute to the weaving of this accretion of assorted noise. Constant disruption comes to mind as a common denominator of these busy sumperimpositions of unrelated, chaotic materials, thus illustrating an illuminating portrait of present day relevance. The internal logic of the accretions obey its obvious lack of coherence, thus drifting in a careful manner if totally devoid of aim, purpose or message. It is merely a portrait in its recurrent, relentless insistence and merciless precission of development.

Fuentes electrnicas procesadas mediante distorsin dan paso progresivamente a texturas ms densas y procesos instrumentales que contribuyen al tejido de estas sedimentaciones de ruido variado. La interrupcin constante como denominador comn de estas densas superposiciones de materiales inconexos, caticos que ilustran un ilustrativo retrato de importancia para el momento presente. La lgica interna de las capas obedece a su propia falta de coherencia, siguiendo as una deriva cuidadosa aunque absolutamente carente de meta, propsito o mensaje. Se trata meramente de un retrato en su insistencia incesante y recurrente y su precisin sin piedad a la hora de desarrollarse.

A series of compositions for contemporary ensemble featuring electronics, concrete sounds, music samples, intrumental sounds ?mainly percussion, reeds and piano- immersed in the aesthetics of the experimental and yet finding a balance between the contents dicovered in that practice and structural concerns resulting from a compositional approach. The style of the composition shifts radically between abstract pieces and idiomatic passages, displaying a broad range of aesthetic influences (comprehensive modern jazz, contemporary music influences, revised funk grooves, processed timbres) which are boldly expressed regardless of the character of the immediately preceding or succeeding tracks and yet managing to keep them within a carefully arranged whole (like an extended version of Quincy Johnes).

Una serie de composiciones para ensemble contempornea que incluyen electrnica, sonidos concretos, fragmentos musicales, sonido instrumental ?fundamentalmente percusin, vientos y piano- inmersos en la esttica de lo experimental y, no obstante, logrando un equilibrio entre los contenidos derivados de dicha prctica y aspectos relativos a una propuesta compositiva. El estilo de la composicin vara de forma radical entre piezas abstractas y pasajes idiomticos, utilizando un amplio elenco de influencias estticas (acercamiento abierto al jazz moderno, influencias de la msica contempornea, ritmos funk de nuevo cuo y timbres procesados) que son expresado con desparpajo a pesar del carcter de lo inmediatamente anterior o siguiente y logrando que se mantengan dentro de un conjunto de cuidados arreglos (como una versin ampliada de Quincy Johnes)

Vast textural surfaces of abstract (sonic) materials unfurl upon large format canvases. Concerned with continuity and dimension, the actual sound sources have a secondary relevance, thus simply featuring a rusty red distorted electric guitar wall of sound. As we advance in time, the pieces begin to include a more complex, difficult aspect pointing at the progression ?from construction to destruction- proposed in the visual work the sound pieces accompanied.

Vastas superficies de materiales (sonoros) abstractos se despliegan sobre lienzos de gran formato. Centradas en la extensin y las proporciones, el carcter de las fuentes sonoras tienen una importancia secundaria, limitndose a incluir unos oxidados muros de sonido de guitarra distorsionada. Segn va transcurriendo el tiempo, las piezas pasan a incluir un aspecto ms complejo y difcil que apunta a la progresin ?desde la construccin a la destruccin- propuesta en las piezas a las que acompaaba la msica.

Based on an exploration of the possibilities offered by modular sounds, drum machines, sound processing and media materials, the project encompasses a series of rhythmical ideas embodied in several short tracks characterized by a strong influence of motion picture sound-tracks and techno grooves, these latter being emphasized by the overt modular aesthetic of the elements employed. Ocassional experimental materials are added as a means of improving an otherwise straightforward outlook where the four/four back-beat structure continues to permeate the whole.

Partiendo de una exploracin de las posibilidades plateadas por los sonidos modulares, cajas de ritmos, procesado de sonido y materiales de los medios, el proyecto comprende una serie de ideas rtmicas materializadas en diversos cortes breves caracterizados por una fuerte influencia de las bandas sonoras y los grooves techno, estos ltimos destacados por lo evidente del carcter de la esttica modular empleada. De forma espordica se aaden materiales de corte experimental como recurso para enriquecer un planteamiento por lo dems convencional en el que la estructura del back-beat sigue impregnando todo el conjunto.

Superimposed layers of acoustic guitar reminiscent of those extremely reverberant and static playing styles associated with vast plateaux, progressively lead to complex textures of increasingly processed sound. Departing from the original source and occasionally turning back, only to begin once more, the music is clearly influenced by rhythmical concerns, while subsequent developments include the use of a wider timbre palette and highlighted acoustic features. The use of processing greatly boosts the possibilities, clothing the instrumental with a nightmarish outlook and, at the same time, continuing to cling on to form which is by now almost inviable.

Las capas superpuestas de guitarra acstica, reminiscentes de aquel estilo de interpretacin tan reverberante y esttico que se suele asociar a vastas mesetas, conduce poco a poco a texturas complejas de sonidos cada vez ms procesados. Alejndose de la fuente original, y en ocasiones regresando aunque solo para volver a empezar de nuevo, la msica est claramente influida por cuestiones rtmicas, mientras que desarrollos ulteriores incluyen la utilizacin de una paleta tmbrica ms amplia y unos rasgos acsticos acentuados. El uso del procesado aumenta considerablemente las posibilidades, revistiendo los desarrollos instrumentales de un velo como de pesadilla y, al mismo tiempo, mientras que contina aferrado a una forma que ya, a estas alturas, es prcticamente insostenible.

Saturation of melodic materials within repetitive structures and overblown harmonics exploring ethereal spaces give way to a minimalist piano that unfolds amidst the electronic foundations and occasionally introduces counterpoints, while the inclusion of pulse elements recalls a certain hint of a pulse framework. By displaying the sounds in their most basic acoustic or modular form, attention is focussed on the repetitive nature of spiral phrases that build up their complexity through the incorporation of subsequent minimalist, out-of-phase layers.

Saturacin de materiales meldicos dentro de estructuras repetitivas y harmnicos sobredimensionados que exploran espacios etreos, dan paso a un piano minimalista que se despliega entre pilares electrnicos e introduce de forma ocasional contrapuntos, mientras que el uso de elementos de pulso trae a la memoria una estructura de pulsos. Al mostrar los sonidos en su forma acstica o modular bsica, se lleva la atencin al carcter repetitivo de las frases en espiral que aumentan en complejidad mediante la incorporacin de sucesivas capas minimalistas, fuera de fase con respecto a las dems.

Slow exploration of liminal ambients in a live recording influenced by the concrete. Sound is approached as abstract material ?its scale often blown up- proposed as single frames surrounded by dark, attention being unavoidably drawn to the details witnessed. Instruments are extended as a result of their encounter with electronic sound, having an abstract quality rather than being idiomatically embedded. Interaction follows the ebb and flow of collective pulses, slowed down organism, its breath taking whole seconds just to exhal the air. Electronic sound is seamlessly close to acoustic explorations although featuring a greater resolution than the acoustic.

Lenta exploracin de ambientes liminales en una grabacin en directo influenciada por lo concreto. Aproximacin al sonido como material abstracto ?su escala a menudo ampliada- propuesto como fotogramas aislados, rodeados por la oscuridad, la atencin necesariamente dirigida a los detalles observados. Los instrumentos son ampliados como resultado del encuentro con el sonido electrnico, mostrando un carcter abstracto antes que situado dentro del marco de lo idiomtico. La interaccin sigue las idas y venidas de los pulsos colectivos, su respirar requiere varios segundos para soltar el aire. El sonido electrnico se encuentra indisociablemente vinculado a las exploraciones acsticas si bien presenta un carcter ms resuelto que lo acstico.

Poulenc is a live interpretation of Francis Poulenc’s religious choral and organ work Litanies la Vierge Noir (1936). The original work consists of a series of prayers to Mary and was composed after the composer’s pilgrimage to the Marian shrine of Rocamadour which contains a wooden Black Madonna. Black Madonnas are thought to be related to pre-Christian Earth Goddess traditions. Their dark skin, the colour of fertile earth, is associated with feminine sexual power and an archetypal Earth Mother who presides over both fertility and death.

The ensemble performed on three consecutive nights to three different audiences. The unedited recording documented here was recorded directly to DAT on the second night and contains no overdubs or post-production. It was the intention of the artists to preserve the spiritual nature of the original work, to harness the sacred and cosmic, whilst recontextualising the sound.

This is our shortest release yet, and it is a long promised one. Promised to my friend ps (Filipe Cruz, curator at Enough Records) as part of a four – I think – volume series. Volume 2 and 4 are already out from some time now (Vol. 2 on Enough Records and Vol. 4 on MiMi). I don’t know what happened to Vol. 3 but we’re going backwards with this one.

The story is quite simple: Filipe handed out one of his trademark dark ambient pieces, called ’332 Variations’, to several musician friends, for them to work out from there and turn the piece into something new or whatever. I got to release two of those workouts/remixes/reworks (pick one): One by Prolepse and the other by Etc (a.k.a. Erratic or Undacova).

The results are quite different from each other. While Prolepse went with the drone/glitch approach to dark ambient, making the piece a mechanical and technological version of a nightmare (short but dense and scary), Etc opted for the ‘acoustic doom’ (Svarte Greiner’s invention) – theme: Sparse and well directed granular distortion, echoing, damp sounds, earth shaking subbasses and other organic related sounds. Amazing track.

The artwork was made by Infetu, which also appears with one reworked piece in Volume 2. He also made the artwork for Volume 4.

A thoroughly experimental approach to the realm of strings under a wide lens, featuring conventional instruments and techniques as well as abstract explorations in the realm of noise… Experimental instruments are explored in a series of settings and with a wide palette of techniques: preparation, tuning, fluctuating pitches, weaving of textures through the superimposition of different strands, possibilities of amplification ?whether acoustic (sound boxes and their material dyeing of sound) or electric (feedback, effects). Engulfed by the sheer amount of possibilities that such adventures open up, the tracks move from the discovery of sounds to musical explorations of great beauty.

Acercamiento experimental al mbito de las cuerdas visto desde una ptica amplia, que incluye instrumentos y tcnicas convencionales as como exploraciones abstractas en el mbito del ruido? Los instrumentos experimentales son explorados en diversos contextos y con una amplia paleta de tcnicas: preparacin, afinacin, timbres fluctuantes, tejido de texturas mediante la superposicin de lineas, posibilidades de amplificacin ?ya sean acsticas (cajas de resonancia y su coloreado material del sonido) o elctricas (acoples, efectos). Encallados en la mera inmensidad del panorama que semejantes aventuras descubren, los cortes van desde el descubrimiento de sonidos a exploraciones de gran belleza.

Drone music in its most extreme expression. Dense sound masses of unwavering, steady development, eventually altered but mostly persistent and featuring an all-pervading horizontality. Humming of mains, oscillator generated frequencies? the various waves take after large abstract paintings and their concern with texture.

Msica pedal en su maxima expresin. Densas masas sonoras de desarrollo continuo, invariable, ocasionalmente alterado aunque sobre todo persistente y desplegando una horizontalidad omnipresente. Zumbido de transformadores, frecuencias generadas por oscilador? las diversas ondas parecen grandes cuadros abstractos por su inters en la textura.

Drawing from horror film score experience, a fascination with noise, ambience, illbience, samples and generative music, mystified has created this interesting EP..

Imagine if, rather than the cheesy strings, the early ’50′s science fiction movies were scored using pots and pans, sheets of steel, and actual sounds from outer space– sounds emitted by the earth, by Jupiter, and other strange sources.

You would be close, in your imagination, to these 3 zany pieces.
