Commissioned as a companion to the ?twice around the earth? project the fragments used for this piece similarly come from the contributions sent to the author?s ?Out of the Blue Radio? programme. The varied nature of the materials result from using synchronicity as global meeting point, whereas the subsequent treatment of the fragments draws on typological organisational criteria of a Cagean chance operation ascendancy if seen from a broader, global radiophonic approach. The actual variety of the sources, together with the random criteria used, guarantees a degree of unforeseen variety that can only emerge from chance, thus dissociating the authorial criteria from the actual result, the meaningful connections emerging from our readinga as listeners.

Encargada a raiz de al proyecto ?twice around the earth?, los fragmentos empleados para esta obra tambin provinen de las contribuciones enviadas al programa radiofnico ?Out of the Blue Radio? del autor. La naturaleza diversa de los materiales responde al uso de la sincrona como punto de encuentro global, mientras que el posterior tratamiento de los materiales recurre a criterios de organizacin tipolgicos de ascendencia Cageana y de sus operaciones aleatorias aunque concebidas desde un planteamiento radiofnico-global ms amplio. La variedad de las fuentes, junto con los criterios aleatorios empleados garantiza un grado de diversidad que solo puede surgir de lo casual, disociando as el criterio del autor del resultado, las coincidencias significativas surgiendo as de nuestra lectura como oyentes.

Starting from an aesthetic environment akin to Henry Cow?s demise, their work features influences of disembodied, denunciatory surrealist lyrics, rhythmic modulation, moving between song forms, pop harmonies and experimental sound backgrounds of hazy, low-fi nature. A progressive evolution from the experimental progressively incorporates heavier punk-industrial rhythms that undoubtedly foretell the dawning simplification of beat structures akin to techno aesthetics while the discontent continues to be aired in lyrics concerned with the greyness of urban lives.

Partiendo de un entorno esttico prximo al legado de Henry Cow, su obra incluye influencias de letras surrealistas incorpreas y de denuncia, modulaciones rtmicas, alternando entre la forma cancin, las armonas pop y fondos sonoros experimentales de carcter borroso y low-fi. Una progresiva evolucin desde lo experimental incorpora paulatinamente aspectos rtmicos ms pesados del punk-industrial que anuncian sin ambajes la futura simplificacin del pulso propia de la msica techno mientras contina el descontento en las letras relativas a las grises vidas urbanas.

Old Strikes New releases his Arcade Awake EP after a lengthy period making final production tweaks and the results are simply outstanding. The title track is a 9-minute centrepiece of hip-hop beats and free jazz noodlings that blends the experimental sounds of Tortoise and the Anticon label into a fluid audio collage. This is surrounded by six pieces of deep, moody electronica that combine lulling piano, pensive dialogue, jittery beats and an overall sense of stark, aesthetic beauty.

A recording that seems to illustrate a transitional period between the experimental ethos of the 70s and a series of multi-stylistic pop collages emerged in the following decade. Previous issues, such as the interaction of instrumental ostinati, freer forms and a more experimental use of electric sound eventually give way to straightforward song forms. Meanwhile, new concerns with rhythmic structures, motifs and poetry are thoroughly explored, while previous, contemporary influenced melodic ideas take on a new expressive dimension through a cabaret-Brecht-cum-Weil aesthetics.

Una grabacin que parece ilustrar un periodo de transicin entre el ethos experimental de los 70 y diversos collages pop surgidos en la siguiente dcada. Intereses previos, como la interaccin de ostinatos instrumentales, formas ms libres y un uso experimental del sonido elctrico dar paso a formas cancin ms convencionales. Mientras, se exploran a fondo nuevas cuestiones relativas a estructuras rtmicas, el uso de motivos y poemas, al tiempo que ideas meldicas anteriores, de influencia contempornea, adquieren una nueva dimensin expresiva mediante la incorporacin de una esttica cabaret a lo Brecht/Weil.

A series of compositions for string quartet (+ electric guitar) explore the interaction between performer and score by allowing various degrees of permutation. Other pieces present a more experimental nature, featuring an emphasis on process, (either through the interaction with software programs or by physically filtering and modulating the acoustic materials) which responds to a deep concern with the composing-performing continuum. The pieces present a horizontal character reminiscent of oriental music (use of overtones) and experimental minimalism. Their slow unfolding responds to the inner logic of the compositional-interpretative process.

Una serie de composiciones para cuarteto de cuerda (+ guitarra elctrica) exploran la interaccin entre intrprete y partitura permitiendo diversos grados de permutacin. Otras piezas presentan un carcter ms experimental, incluyendo un nfasis en el proceso, (ya sea mediante la interaccin con programas de software o el filtrado fsico y la modulacin de materiales acsticas) lo que responde a una profunda inquietud respecto a la importancia del continuo composicin-ejecucin. Las piezas presentan un carcter horizontal que recuerda la msica oriental (uso de armnicos) y obras del minimalismo experimental. Su desarrollo lento responde a una lgica interna del proceso de composicin-ejecucin.

A series of improvisations placed halfway between early modern chamber works and an extension of techniques and interaction around instrumental and sonic concerns. A common background is periodically revisited to recover a sense of direction, and subsequently abandoned to explore the timbric possibilities of the instruments. Later on, a wider set of concerns alternates with articulatory issues ?plucking, friction or attack-, while turntablism, introduces a completely new sonic and interactive dimension: instrumental sources hint at various layers of the real, displaying a string of mirages where the violin finds its alter ego, transforming itself in a dialogue with the extended techniques of the recorded sources.

Una serie de improvisaciones a medio camino entre obras camersticas de la primera contempornea y la ampliacin de tcnicas e interaccin propias de inquietudes instrumentales y sonoras. El retorno al territorio comn sirve para recuperar el sentido de la orientacin y para partir en busca de posibilidades tmbricas. Ms tarde, un catlogo de inquietudes ms amplio alterna con aspectos articulatorios ?percusin, friccin o ataque-, mientras que el turntablismo plantea una nueva dimensin sonora e interactiva: las fuentes instrumentales apuntan diversas capas de lo real, desplegando una cadena de espejismos donde el violn encuentra su alter ego, transformndose a s mismo en un dilogo con las tcnicas ampliadas de las fuentes grabadas.

Electroacoustic trio weaving sampled and live sounds as part of a single continuum, encompassing a rich range of sonorities. The outlook, featuring oriental timbres and recalling contemporary music conceptions, unfolds in slow circular sequences that, nevertheless, create a narrative thread. Their poetics proposes a deceiving play on mirrors, the instrumental roles dismantled through that very multiplying of reflections, the sound quality creating an endless kaleidoscopic impression of elusive dimensions.

Tro electroacstico que teje sonidos sampleados y en vivo como parte de un nico continuo, abarcando un nutrido abanico de sonoridades. Su mirada, que incluye timbres orientales y recuerda conceptos de la contempornea, se despliega en lentas secuencias circulares que, no obstante, plantean un hilo argumental. Su potica propone un engaoso juego de espejos, siendo los roles instrumentales desmontados por esa misma proliferacin de reflejos, mientras la calidad sonora plantea una interminable impresin caleidoscpica de dimensiones elusivas.

A radical reinvention displays the process at close quarters, from a textural, almost tactile perspective. The layers behave as pulses of a marked organic ascendancy, portrayed in their tiniest detail, their flow distanced from previous concerns, more in keeping with a material interaction than with the linguistic articulation of the instrumental, raw matter rather than riddle. The sources function on two different, simultaneous levels: that of the real-time interaction and that of reflection, -a look going back to the processes, constantly returning, present through a distilled listening reflection. Both processes are indissolubly connected to one another, like face and back of a leaf and, as such, present an inevitable organic character.

Una reinvencin radical muestra el proceso en primer plano, desde una perspectiva textural, casi tctil. Las capas se comportan como pulsos de marcada ascendencia orgnica, retratados al detalle, su flujo alejado de intereses previos, ms afines a la interaccin material que a la articulacin lingstica de lo instrumental, material prima antes que acertijo. Las fuentes funcionan en dos niveles diferentes, simultaneos: el de la interaccin en tiempo real y el de la reflexin, una mirada que vuelve a los procesos, en regreso constante, presente a travs de una reflecin destilada en la escucha. Ambos procesos estn conectados el uno al otro de forma indisoluble, como el haz y el envs de una hoja y, como ellos, presentan un inevitable carcter orgnico.

Acoustic duo exploring the possibilities offered by their instuments in a straightforward linguistic fashion. Their encounter presents a contrasting outlook in relation to interaction: suddenly, a strong, traditionally influenced approach to the instruments invades their collaboration, taking them away from a shared, immersive approach to sound research and rather responding to a concern with the calculated.

Do acstico que explora las posibilidades ofrecidas por sus instrumentos desde un concepto lingstico estndard. Su encuentro presenta una perspectiva contrastante en cuanto a la interaccin: de repente, la concepcin tradicional del instrumento invade su colaboracin, alejndolos de un plantemiento inmersivo en el mbito de la investigacin sonora, obedeciendo ahora a una preocupacin por lo calculado.

The progressive development of more complex sound layers anchored in the realm of the idiomatic coexists with vintage sounds that bring forward dyes akin to those of experimental electronics pioneers.

Un mundo electrnico minimal con planteamientos afines a la primera electrnica, parte de ideas enraizadas a nivel conceptual y tmbrico en el uso de sntesis modular, asi como fuentes acsticas grabadas y sampleadas, ruido procesado electrnicamente y gestos modificados. El desarrollo progresivo de capas sonoras ms complejas, ancladas en el mbito de lo idiomtico convive con sonidos de poca que aportan tintes propios de los pioneros de la electronica experimental.

Alexandr Vatagin has been playing bass for about three years. He started playing in his band Tupolev and later on joined und morgen, der asphalt both have released excellent ep’s on 12rec. But now it’s time for Alexanders solo works. It all started when he began to play cello and made some solo songs for fun. The songs became more serious and the first recordings he made were “aventurin” and “rats and mistakes”. The sound is very different from his bands, the poppy/folky vibes are almost absent and instead there is a very mellow sound. Because Alexander has mostly been working with acoustic instruments the songs have a very organic feel. But he has not been completely alone on the album, his friends in Tupolev helped out and played on some of the less ambient tracks. Through-out the whole album Alexander works with drones and noises, but on top of it all he adds simple but beautiful piano melodies, bass lines and cello. Valeot is an excellent album and to be honest one of my favourites so far on mirakelmusik.

A trio featuring electric aspects that contribute a cohesive element to a free improvisation, where free jazz roots and experimental outlooks can be traced, and enable a rich superimposition of linguistically independent layers. Four way drumming, harmonically distant materials, autarchic stances are alternatively blurred into a single discourse. When the group moves away from collective free playing, the textures become far richer, producing a wealth of nuances, often through extended harmonies and melodic concerns that emerge as the interaction is warmed up. The role of the drums stands out as it promotes interaction and provides a framework in which melodic threads can be later woven.

Un tro con aspectos elctricos que aportan coherencia a una improvisacin libre con raices en el free jazz y de mirada experimental y que permiten una rica superposicin de niveles lingsticos independientes. La percusin a cuatro ?manos?, el alejamiento armnico y los plantemientos autrquicos se desdibujan por turnos en un discurso nico. Al distanciarse de la interaccin colectiva, las texturas se tornan mucho ms complejas, con una miriada de matices surgidos de la ampliacin armnica y meldica que surgen segn se va engrasando la interaccin. La cuidada labor percusiva estimula la interaccin y ofrece un marco para colgar las hebras meldicas.

D999 is a duet formed by Jean-Franois Olivier (laptop) and David Caulet (tenor saxophone), and is based in Nmes, France. On this short EP, recorded at the GNEM in Marseille, they explore the interactions between the acoustic (and melody) of the saxophone and ambient textures mixed with ‘on the fly’ sampling from the laptop computer. Their music is very intuitive and dense, varying from minimalistic question/answer or tiny electronic filters on short melodic sentences to overwhelming and almost noisy phases. Caution: This is some highly inspired music that could irritate well-educated students.

Layers of instruments modified by effect processors. Shifting perspectives, -strings, percussion, woodwinds- within fixed time limits, monochrome tendencies, grouping the materials according to source identity, within a closed, given set of parameters. A fascination with the interaction of harmonic partials, functioning like a magnet for the timbre of other instruments or the backwards played tapes, hint at earlier studio techniques, contributing a vintage electronic flavour.

Capas instrumentales modificadas mediante procesadores de efectos. Perspectivas cambiantes, -cuerdas, percusin, vientos- dentro de tempos fijos, tendencias moncromas, agrupacin de materiales segn la identidad de la fuente, dentro de parmetros fijos. Fascinacin por la interaccin de parciales armnicos que hacen de imn para los timbres de otros instrumentos o las cintas reproducidas el revs, en un guio a tcnicas de estudio previas, que aportan un aroma de elctronica de poca.

Thoroughly concerned with the enormity of space, the work of this composer features a marked visual line, exploring spatial vastness, evoking dimensions in the distance, as seen through a wide lens, focusing on the sheer size of the portrayed. The deep experience of spatial movement pays homage to cinema while the experience of witnessing sound sources within a three-dimensional space is blended with that of orchestras and choirs.

Un profundo inters por la enormidad del espacio caracteriza la obra de esta compositora, que tiene un carcter marcadamente visual y explora la vastedad espacial, evocando dimensiones lejanas, como se ven a travs de un ojo de pez, centrndose en la mera escala de lo retratado. La profunda experiencia del movimiento espacial rinde tributo al cine, mientras que la experiencia de fuentes sonoras en un espacio tridimensional se funde con la de la orquesta y el coro.
