Tupolev : tupolev EP

Unordinary sounds are reaching us from Tupolev out of Vienna. Founded back in 2002, punk-alike with the buying of their instruments, Tupolev soon enlarge their soundcosmos by keys, synthesizers and string instruments. After several changes of the band’s constitution, their hermetic Folk becomes more and more experimental without losing its perticular beauty.

Throughout their selftitled debut-EP, there is a feeling of vagueness and stumbling. Tupolev play very slow, add a lot of time-changes and keep rolling around all common harmonies. It’s a kind of Jazz-Music, for these guys know exactly what they’re doing: Song number four, called As For Misery, sounds like a sad drunken sailorman walking home at five o’clock in the morning. Deep minor chords, singing, field-rec, a little drums. But boy, after seven minutes the sun seems to rise; sounds increase like the city awakens and a melody as-beautiful-as-it-can-get emerges from the depths, lasting only for a few seconds before the song ends. On the other end of the spectrum there is Rnd, the song afterwards, a mathematical piece of Chamber-Folk, precise and perfect.

It takes Tupolev three songs and exactly 12 minutes and 17 seconds to raise their voices. And when they do so, nothing really happens- their singing isn’t meant for grapping one’s attention, to carry emotion or even content. It’s just a further instrument to acomplish their certain vision of contemporary Avant-garde Folk-Music.

Tutu Combo:

Inserting into acoustical playing the influence of improvised electronic musics, the group aims at a meeting and at a dialogue of the mediums. His performances are sometimes entirely acoustical, sometimes subject to various types of amplification and electrical implements. The Tutu Combo is active since 2000. It regroups musicians been used by free improvisation.

The group favours the contexts of correlation with other forms of art and often collaborated with poets or video directors.

Tutu Combo envisages music in a completely play manner. In a spirit of game more than in virtuosity, work plans are determined by the participants. The musicians appropriate in their please these rules imposed to transform, confuse, twist sound material. The cohesion of the group is so much fond of the freedom of individual expression of the artists who compose it that in the almost private relation of exchange and listening who link them up in game.

Tutu Combo plays seriously as children.

Since 2003, the members of the group also founded Tour de Bras, an organism of creation, production and broadcasting of actual musics.

Heddy boubaker:

After exploring a lot of musical way on guitare and as autodidacte, Heddy Boubaker, currently living near Toulouse (F), fall in love with the saxophone. And from jazz to free-jazz, he approch to the deep form of improvised music, crossing the way of musician as L Quan Ninh, Barre Phillips, Sbastien Cirotteau or Fabien Duscomb, develloping a sound where meet rivers, falls, wind in the trees, murmurs or crash of the city, the false silence of an old sleepy house, cracking of the wood and squealing of the gravel under the steps of phlegmatic walkers, mooings, squealings and whistles of phantasmagoric animals… all of this imaginary, imagined, unimaginable sounds who are connected freely in an unceasingly renewed poetry.

He is also organising concert in “”La Maison Peinte” in Labarthe sur Lze.

Imagho – someone controls electric guitar

Jean-Louis Prades created Imagho in 1997, already basing his work on guitars, infinite delays, and loops. His first album?s [?image des mondes flottants?, loom 2000] frozen harmonies of tangled sonic layers and loops earned Imagho to be compared to the likes of the Boxhead Ensemble.

?Someone controls electric guitar? stems from improvised sessions recorded in a long period ? several years. This album is the first to be entirely untitled to the guitar, using no other source. The natural sound of amplified electric guitars is transformed into ever-changing sonic landscapes, as a tribute to the warm, resounding and versatile aspects of the instrument.

Imagho sublimates all the small cracks, jack sounds, and various eccentricities of the guitar, building fluid and harmonious atmospheres from these ?glitches?. This is made possible by the using of laptop and real time treatment through free improvisation.

Imagho?s sonic artefacts might evoke Christian Fennesz on the most hypnotic moments, as well as Gastr del Sol or Bill Frisell?s oblique harmonies.

Rodrigues, Sehnaoui, Sehnaoui – sable ep

Ernesto Rodrigues has, of all players in the field of non-idiomatic improv, been the most manifest on the internet, with what is now already his third net-label release (also having his music out on ctrl-alt-canc and Stasisfield). Within this present constellation (together with Libanese avantists Christine & Sharif Sehnaoui) a musical universe is conjured which, lacking any figurative tendencies, can be characterised as a very hylic affair – dealing as it does with the ‘lowest’ portion of musical matter, letting for no instance of sublimation. The grittiness, the very elemental quality of the sonorities are something of a very coarse-definition blow-up of the respective instrument’s material properties (being violin, guitar & saxophone), a white-noise produced by solely analogue mechanics. Under the stress & strain of several extended techniques the acoustic possibilities that these instruments intrinsically possess are elicited from the marrow of their material structure, which is not a pretty picture. It is, in fact, not a picture at all, but rather an instance of the deconstruction of Maya.

Brooklyn-based composer Anne Guthrie creates immersive sonic environments intended to disorient the listener with their dichotomy between expansive space and intimate sonic details. In Conservatoire, Guthrie offers two variations on field recordings she made of the Conservatory at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. The first, lengthier piece develops slowly out of an expansive, bass-heavy sea of humming, gradually revealing the field recordings which compete for dominance with the underlying drones as the piece moves towards its conclusion. The second piece concentrates on higher registers, giving a bit more prominence to the field recordings while the drones mutate with slightly more urgency. Beautifully crafted sonic architecture evoking movement and interaction within a challenging space.

Albert Casais omnid – camp

It seems as though there isn’t much room left for dance music in the current avant-obsessed and cut-throat world of experimental electronic music, but New Jersey resident Albert Casais is keeping the party going with his funk-infused Omnid project. Using an array of cutting edge software and his trusty Nord Lead, Casais creates a lyrical, but cold and robotic journey through abstraction, culminating in the slippery rhythms of ‘milikk’–chunked trash beats cemented by a dizzying lead, endlessly looped into the void. But Omnid doesn’t tarry long in this pulsating universe, and soon the listener is left to sift through the ashes during the fragmented refuse of ‘Exxon Mobil’.

Takeshi Nakamura – Easy Listening

Takeshi Nakamura is back on zymogen for another brilliant work taking his sound to another level of complexity. This 6 tracks ep has been produced after Ordinary Days following similar processes of composition, always keeping a quality level near to the maximum and creating sonorities similar to his previous record without any loss of intensity.
Takeshi accustoms us to pure geometric structures stained with digital rough sketches, sweet discords and harmonious glitches, but with these compositions he overcomes his strandards.
Wonderful…can you find a better word to start this promenade through artificial landscapes?
“I Sink” moves from frenetic beats with hissing basses in constant evolution and slow pads expanding under robotic voices, a lesson of composition. The following “Cloud” is an hypnotic sequence with cuts of a melody lost in reverbs wich becomes concrete into “Defeat”, a groovy declaration of digital pessimism, totally amazing! During “Particle” an incredible flow of silicic acid will reach you neurons, floating high frequencies over a rough snares wich keep up the fragile structure of the beat. The conclusion of the ep is “Sundial”, a long evolution of a simple idea based on soft loops slowly submerged by an enormous flux of ultra-low frequencies and drones for an intense growth wich finishes in the same way it started like an infinite mantra; personally one of the best song created by Nakamura so far.
With this work Takeshi shows once again his abilities to creating deep experimental music and we feel really lucky to have the possibility to release a work of this kind of quality…an “Easy Listening” near perfection.

Christian Bucher:
Born in 1969 in Zug (ch), Christian Bucher built his reputation as with his drums solo concert as with his frequent collaborations with other art domains like painting photography, sculpture, video, installation, performance, architectur, litteratur, theater and dance.
With Guido Egli, he wrote musique for documentaries by Stefan Jäger “Von Grund auf wär ich ein Mensch zum Leben” and “Schritte gegen den Wind”.
He was member of “Nevertheless” jazz trio and “Gruppe 9″ (9 artists group). He actually play in duo “Bucher/Fehlmann” and with “Portobello”.
He played in Swizerland, South Africa, Germany, Austria, Brazil, China, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, India, Poland and Thailand.

Andreas Glauser:
Andreas Glauser, diplomed from the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunste of Lucerne in art and cultural management, is active as artiste and musician.
He experimente, between nose and music, with various devices, analog synths, orgues, mixers or tapes. he alos work with softwarw like Logic.
He coordinate the “brainhall art production” label, who releases few limited cdr’s series and one dvd.

Marc Unternährer:
Marc Unternährer (1975) lives and works in Luzern (ch). He did Classical studies at the Musikhochschule Luzern, Fak. I, performance master degree in 2001.
He worked in different orchestras around Switzerland, but mostly doing modern composed music in various ensembles and as a soloist. As a musician and performer he took part of two theatre pieces by Ruedi Häusermann at the Basel Schauspielhaus.
He currently plays with the Chicago ? Luzern Exchange, Albin Brun?s Alpin Quintett, Pipelines (with Hans Kennel and John Wolf Brennan), Mytha and the NAH Trio with Albin Brun on Schwyzerörgeli and Andy Aegerter on drums.
In 2002, Marc Unternährer spent five months in Chicago in the Artists Studio, provided by the Sister Cities Luzern-Chicago, where he met and played with many musicians from the local improvising music scene.
He also played with Marco Käppeli, Fredy Studer, Rob Mazurek, Peter Schärli, Beat Unternährer, Cristin Wildbolz, Andreas Glauser, Christian Bucher, Markus Lauterburg, Swiss Improvisors Orchestra, Andres Bosshard and many others. He teaches Introduction to Free Improvisation, Concept Pieces and Graphical Notations at the Musikhochschule Luzern.

The irrelevance of connotations emerges as the interactive possibilities are explored. Their search for a suitable arena ? where the conversation between acoustic percussion and electronics is viable- stems from a reflection on the disparity between the apparent incompatibilities and the development of suitable perspectives, no matter the origin. They present us with a reflection on listening, shared spaces, improvisation and simplicity. The slowly matured approach to the materials allows a complicity in the listening which becomes manifest both in real time interaction and field recordings.

La irrelevancia de las connotaciones emerge mientras se exploran las posibilidades interactivas. Su bsqueda de un terreno adecuado ?donde las conversaciones entre la percusin acstica y la electrnica sean viable- surge de una reflexin sobre la disparidad entre las aparentes incompatibilidades y el desarrollo de perspectivas adecuadas, sin importar su procedencia. Ellos plantean una reflexin sobre la escucha, sobre espacios compartidos, improvisacin y simplicidad. La relacin con los materiales, desarrollada despacio, permite una complicidad en la escucha que se vuelve manifiesta tanto en su interaccin en tiempo real como en las grabaciones de campo.
