Sound Clips: Canto, Miniature and Time by Julien Beau
Acousmatic music is a form of electroacoustic music that deals specifically with acousmatic sound as a compositional resource. The practice has a historical basis in musique concrete. It can be created using non-acoustic technology, exists only in a recorded format (as a fixed medium), and is composed for reception via loudspeakers. The compositional material is not restricted to the inclusion of sonorities derived from musical instruments or voices, nor to elements traditionally thought of as ‘musical’ (melody, harmony, rhythm, metre and so on), but rather admits any sound, acoustic or synthetic. In this context the compositional method can be seen as a process of sound organisation: a term first used by the French composer Edgard Varèse.
For these particular sound works Julien Beau writes:
Canto is an improvisation mixed with Max/MSP and sampled wind instruments.
Miniature was composed for “Les Inouies of Nov’Art” in November last year at Bordeaux.
Time was a piano session recorded at home.

Futura 2010 Call for works
Oct 9th 2009
For its 2010 edition, the Futura festival is looking for fixed media works (acousmatic music, musique concrète, video art, hörspiel, etc.) around the ‘travel diary’ thematic.
The sent works may be ‘real’ diaries, elaborated with sound takes and/or recognizable images, but these diaries may also be ‘abstract’, without any identifiable sounds, concentrating only on remaining traces, impressions. The works evolving between these two poles are also, indeed, welcome.
It is all about drawing a large and original view of the ‘travel diary’, which is not only a journey in a geographical space, but rather the expression of an experience or a view on the surrounding world. As such, it is not absolutely necessary to have crossed back and forth the whole planet to submit a proposal, obviously travels are also metaphoric. It can be expressed through very diverse aesthetics and forms.
Nonetheless, we are not looking for ‘raw’, ‘objective’ soundscapes or field-recordings. To the contrary, we would like to program subjective works, and place at the centre of this thematic the perception of the traveller-composer-artist.
The submissions:
- The limited number of submissions is 2 works by composer, excepting works with video which amount is not limited.
- Only sonic works on tape medium should be submitted (acousmatic/concrète, radiophonic art…).
Please do not send proposals for live electronics or performances.
- Preference is given to stereophonic music (multiphonic works may be accepted, but always if a stereo mix is provided for the selection process).
- Works including video are also encouraged.
-Deadline for the reception of works on CD Audio only (no cd-r or DVD-Audio) or DVD (for videos) is fixed before January 31 2010 (post-marked).
At the following address: Futura, 62, avenue de Flandre F-75019 Paris, France.
- Fill necessarily the form you’ll find as an attachment and send it by email: info@festivalfutura.fr
- Also send by email a program note about the submitted work (20 lines max), a short biography and a picture (.tiff or .jpg) to info@festivalfutura.fr

Francis Dhomont. Oct 30. 7pm. ISSUE Project Room. NYC
Oct 7th 2009

Francis Dhomont studied under Ginette Waldmeier, Charles Koechlin and Nadia Boulanger. In the late 40’s, in Paris (France), he intuitively discovered with magnetic wire what Schaeffer would later call “musique concrète” and consequently conducted solitary experiments with the musical possibilities of sound recording. Later, leaving behind instrumental writing, he dedicated himself exclusively to electroacoustic composition.
An ardent proponent of acousmatics, his work (since 1963) is comprised exclusively of works for tape bearing witness to his continued interest in morphological interplay and ambiguities between sound and the images it may create.
The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec has awarded him a prestigious carreer grant. In 1999, he was awarded five first prizes for four of his recent works at international competition (Brazil, Spain, Italy, Hungary and Czech Republic). In 1997, as the winner of the Canada Council for the Arts’ Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award, he was also supported by the DAAD for a residence in Berlin (Germany). Five-time winner at the Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Competition (France) — the Magisterium Prize in 1988 — and 2nd Prize at Prix Ars Electronica 1992 (Linz, Austria), he has received numerous other awards.
He is the editor of special issues published by Musiques & Recherches (Belgium) and of “Électroacoustique Québec: l’essor” (Québec Electroacoustics: The Expansion) — for Circuit (Montréal). Musical coeditor of the Dictionnaire des arts médiatiques (published byUQAM), he is also lecturer and has produced many radio programs for Radio-Canada and Radio-France.
In 1978-2005, he has divided his time between France and Québec, where he has taught at the Université de Montréal from 1980 to 1996. Since the end of 2004 he lives in Avignon (France) and regularly presents his works in France and abroad. Great traveller, he participates in several juries.
He is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre (CMC, 1989) and a Founding Member (1986) and Honorary Member (1989) of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC). In October 2007, Université de Montréal awarded him a honoris causa doctorate. He is the president of the collective Les Acousmonautes in Marseille (France) and “Ehrenpatron” (honour patron) of the organization Klang Projekte Weimar (Germany).
He now focuses on composition and theory.

“Focus”
Versprühte Sounds, ständig in Bewegung.
