The IDAF Prize 2013: Symbiosis
Symbiosis: A relationship of mutual benefit or dependence[?]
This year, the theme of Kingston University’s Improvisation and Digital Arts Festival (IDAF) is symbiosis.
The ways in which we make, perform and discuss music have never been so diverse. Musicians, composers, performers and theorists are finding endless new ways to create, direct and discuss music making on a huge range of different platforms. Bearing this in mind, the theme of symbiosis for IDAF 2013 is intended to broaden our understanding of what a symbiotic relationship might be, through both creative practice and theoretical discourse.
Symbiosis could be perceived in relationships between performers, performers and composers or digital artists and the technologies they work with. Other perspectives might examine cross/interdisciplinary practice, the interaction between the tangible/ virtual or human/machine, or the relationship between ‘popular’ and ‘art’ music practices.
The IDAF prize will be awarded in recognition of an outstanding piece of work under the broad headings of improvisation and the digital arts. We encourage submissions of both fixed work and documentations of performance/installations (which may be audio-only or mixed media) that address the festival theme of Symbiosis.
The winner of the IDAF prize will be invited to perform and/or present their work at the IDAF festival, 15th-19th April 2013 at Kingston University, London, UK (Reasonable artist expenses including accommodation and UK travel will be covered. The festival regrets that it is unable to cover travel expenses from outside the UK but can provide letters of support for external funding applications).
To submit your work for consideration for the IDAF Prize 2013, please send the following, in a single word doc/pdf, to submissions@idaf.co.uk by Saturday 16 February, 2013:
The title and date of completion of the work.
The artist(s) name and contact details.
A brief description of the work and its relevance to the festival theme in word doc/pdf format (max. 100 words).
A brief bio of the artist (max. 100 words).
A link to the work online (ideally via dropbox, yousendit or another file sharing site, or through soundcloud/vimeo etc)
Please also indicate your availability during the festival dates to present your work.
