\u201cGetting Started with Sound in Max<\/span>\u201d is an\u00a0ONLINE<\/span>\u00a0course that will be offeredstarting June 1st 2015\u00a0<\/span>at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt). Enrollment is open to the general public — you do\u00a0not<\/span>\u00a0need to be a student at MassArt in order to enroll. This is a\u00a01.5 college credit<\/span>\u00a0module offered through the Studio for Interrelated Media (SIM). The price is\u00a0$620<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0over six weeks<\/span>\u00a0of intensive instruction.\u00a0You may register by phone by calling the MassArt Continuing Education office at 617-879-7200 or you may register online through the link below: http:\/\/www.massart.edu\/continuing_education.html<\/a> Course Description<\/p>\n This intensive online course is for beginners in Max who want to create\u00a0sound works<\/span>. Using a step-by-step approach, you will learn how to build Max patches [self-contained programs] from the ground up, while designing a portfolio of sound controllers, sequencers, synthesizers, samplers and a wide array of sound processors, all which can be used for live performance. Patches will reflect your own interests, tastes and background. Digital sound concepts will be made understandable and one-on-one help will be provided throughout the course. Classes are posted once weekly for this online course, but do not meet in real-time, allowing some flexibility for individual schedules. Academic discounts on Max are available for students enrolled in the course for credit. She has presented these works throughout North America and Europe at many important venues, festivals, museums and galleries and has given academic presentations about her works at many colleges and universities (see\u00a0her website<\/a>for more details). She has been working with Cycling 74\u2018s Max for the past 10 years and received a Max\/MSP\/Jitter certificate from Harvestworks in May 2011. Using Cycling 74’s Max, Judy has developed an artificial intelligence that can extract and remember the semi-random pitches and rhythmic patterns of her “tenor balloon” and provide live improvisational interaction based on this data via MIDI or synthesis. In October 2014 she used this system to perform with Godfried Willem-Raes\u2019 \u201cPlayer Piano II\u201d MIDI-based instrument at the Logos Foundation in Gent, Belgium (a video of which you can see\u00a0on YouTube.<\/a>). Subsequently she was awarded a residency at the Electronic Music Studios in Stockholm Sweden for further research and development of the interactive system. She will give a presentation\/demo about her system as part of the New York Electronic Art Festival (NYEAF) in New York City in summer 2015. She has a Ph.D. in music composition from Stony Brook University and an M.A. with emphasis in experimental music composition from Wesleyan University, where she studied with Alvin Lucier.
