Back in the United States from their recent 5-city tour of Japan promoting their eponymous 2008 CD, Point of Contact perform at Other Ideas at Kava Gallery on Sunday, August 10th. Point of Contact is an intimate collaborative project featuring multi-reedist Ellen Weller and husband/pianist/drummer Bob Weller, with special guest, percussionist/electronic musician Marcos Fernandes. Point of Contact explores the various intersections that occur during real-time composition given the diverse musical paradigms of the players. Group improvisations reveal their jazz, classical, rock and world music underpinnings, with offerings ranging from quiet, introspective linear textures to explosive, in-your-face bursts of spicy dissonance and extended techniques.

Multi-woodwind player Ellen Weller has been an active member of the Southern California improvised music scene for the past 15 years, and appears on several recordings, including Nathan Hubbard’s Skeleton Key Orchestra and Jason Robinson’s Fingerprint (circ 050). Her well-received 2004 debut CD as leader, Spirits, Little Dreams and Improvisations (circ 041) featured many of the West’s premier musicians. Bob Weller is busy as jazz pianist and drummer, and has produced two recent recordings of his own compositions: Tree of Thorns (circ 044) with contributions from son Danny Weller, and a trio project on the YUSM label. Ellen Weller is a member of the Trummerflora Collective, a San Diego-based organization dedicated to the support of creative new music , and is Assistant Professor –World Music at Palomar College in San Marcos, CA.

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Marcos Fernandes has long been active in San Diego as performer, producer and curator. He has performed in Japan, Hong Kong, Mexico, Canada and the US as a solo improviser, phonographer and as percussionist/sound artist with various ensembles. Fernandes runs the artist-based independent label Accretions, home to some of today's more innovative experimentalists. He is a founding member of the Trummerflora collective, dedicated to creative music in Southern California. Fernandes' recordings have appeared on Accretions, Bake/Staalplaat, Circumvention, Pan Handler, Pax, Pfmentum, Phonography.org, Public Eyesore, Ribosome and Solitary B.

Sound For the Organization of Society is a creative music ensemble which plays original music by all of its members, and presents works which equally balance composition and improvisation. The group’s music draws from jazz, world music, and many other sources to create a unique and attractive brand of acoustic fusion.
The band was originally formed in 2004 in New Orleans. After a few performances, the members were scattered across the county by Hurricane Katrina, but reassembled in 2006 to record “India and Africa”, which was released in 2007. Further recording for a forthcoming album on Circumvention Records took place in Portland, OR in 2007. Currently, band members are living all across the U.S. but are reassembling for a West Coast tour August 1-10, 2008.

Ingo Deul – drums, percussion
A native of Wiesbaden, Germany, Ingo Deul spent his first 10 years as a professional drummer in Europe, playing primarily in rock and fusion bands. He then moved to the U.S. to study jazz, first in New York and in New Orleans, where he studied with Johnny Vidacovich. Ingo has also studied with Vinnie Golia and Wadada Leo Smith, and currently lives in Los Angeles.
Kevin Dewan – drums, percussion
Kevin Dewan is a native of northeast Ohio. After playing in rock bands in high school, he moved to New Orleans in 2002 to study jazz with Johnny Vidacovich. He performed with numerous groups in New Orleans, earned a degree in Music from Loyola University New Orleans, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Phelan Gallager – saxophones
Phelan Gallagher grew up in East Blue Hill, Maine, and learned to play jazz from his father, a well known bassist in the region. He attended Loyola University New Orleans and graduated with a B.M. in composition in 2007. He has studied saxophone primarily with Bill McHenry and Tony Dagradi, and has performed with various ensembles in New Orleans and elsewhere. Phelan lives in New York City.
Tom Garcia – saxophones, flute, didgeridoo
Tom Garcia is a saxophonist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began to study jazz with Tim Price in high school. He then moved to New Jersey and subsequently to New Orleans, where he studied with Tony Dagradi. He plays all the saxophones and flute, and is also a saxophone handyman and makes his own didgeridoos. Tom is an avid cyclist and currently lives in Sendai, Japan.
Eric Klerks – bass
A student of Charlie Haden, Brian Seeger, Alan Broadbent, Larry Koonse and Tony Dagradi among others, Eric Klerks has been improvising on stringed instruments for more years than he would care to remember. Some of his major performances have occurred in and around Los Angeles, New Orleans, San Francisco, New York, and The Netherlands. He is the composer-in-residence for the Shakespeare Festival at Tulane University. Eric also enjoys beaches, unicycles and good scotch. He lives in Los Angeles.
Chris Mosley – guitar, fretless guitar
Chris was born and raised in Austin, TX and began playing music when he was 11 years old. He spent two years at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying with Mick Goodrick, Joe Lovano, Jon Damian, Dave Tronzo, Garrison Fewell, and Dave Santoro, among many others. While there, he began studying fretless guitar with Dave Fiucsynski, which led him to become a devoted student of microtonal music. In the fall of 2005, he moved to Portland, Oregon, where he lives, teaches, and plays. He has released an independent debut album, “The Miraculous Aspect of Time,” and a second album “Outside Voices,” on Portland’s Diatic Records.
Andrew Oliver – piano, keyboard, harmonium, cello
Andrew Oliver is a pianist and composer from Portland, Oregon. He also plays cello and trumpet. He has studied primarily with Randy Porter, Matt Lemmler, and Darrell Grant. He lived in New Orleans from 2002 until 2005. Since returing to Portland after Hurricane Katrina, he has released an album of original music, “Otis Stomp” on Diatic Records, founded the Portland Jazz Composers’ Ensemble, and toured Africa as part of saxophonist Devin Phillips’ group with the U.S. State Department’s Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad program.
Sarah Phillips – keyboard, piano
A composer, pianist, and improviser, Sarah Phillips is from Dallas, Texas. She lived in New Orleans from 2001-2005, and currently lives in Los Angeles. She has studied composition with Jimbo Walsh and Wadada Leo Smith. She has composed for various ensembles, notably the New Orleans New Music Ensemble, which she co-founded.
