V/A : 2 Favourite Places
Nov 9th

Following last week’s Thomas Koner’s mentioning of longitude/lattitude’s in the piece, this compilation, the second in a series, does the same. Each of the ten pieces is a favorite place for the composer. They are also mentioned by the place it is, although then its still not easy to know what it is, except of course ‘my bed’ by He Can Jog. I could of course install google’s earth view thingy, but then I rather listen and imagine these places myself. Oh oops. The booklet provides me with pictures and descriptions of each of the places, which is a nice read. If you read these, you might think that this is a CD of purely field recordings, as there are references to recording dates/times, but I guess that’s when the basic material has been recorded, which was later manipulated. Throughout one can say that these ten composers all belong to the world of microsound, with their minimalist, electronic processing of the original field recordings. Sometimes we hear a bit of rainfall, bird twitter, people talking or snooring in ‘my bed’. Not much news under the sun in terms of music, but throughout I must say this is a nice compilation of well made field recordings, microsound and electronics. Including Lawrence English, Yannick Franck, Micheal Santos, Icarus, Sawako, Jeremy Bible, Austitici, Calika and Micheal Trommer. (FdW) Vital Weekly 696

Rodrigues / Rodrigues / Santos / Drury : eterno retorno
Aug 2nd

I really like the style of free improvisation adopted by Ernesto (viola) and Guilherme (cello) Rodrigues, the Portuguese father-son duo. On this, they form a quartet with electronician Carlos Santos and percussionist Andrew Drury. Improvisation that draws and retains your attention, its games of interplay and silence weaving a soundworld that has a lot of depth and an extremely flexible timeline. Good work from Drury, whose minute playing mimicks the strokes and scratches of the strings. Santos’ electronics are subtle and tasteful. A demanding but revelatory listen. ANTOINE CHESSEX / ARNAUD RIVIERE : SPLIT 7
Jul 30th

My one- and only- criticism of this release is that it’s limited to only 300 copies. (though I get to keep my promo) The artwork is stunning – someone knows what they are doing! A coarse and beautiful silkscreen sleeve which could have been a woodcut, the disk itself clear, with ”clever” labels identifying the polish and pill sides respectively. You can check this out on the website (and hear mp3 extracts which saves me detailed description) – of Le Petit Mignon “a gallery and a music label located in the mighty specialist of experimental and avant-garde music record store Staalplaat” Which explains the quality? Just in case you might think its all packaging – well no- the two pieces complement each other and the whole production. Antoine Chessex’s sax sounds like an alarm until its swamped in HWN – in which tide it rises and falls, Arnaud Rivière’s electronics are equally brilliant and harsh – though much more sporadic. I should also name check designer, printer and regurgitater
Mounir Jatoum of La Commissure & mastering by Rashad Becker at Dubplates. Vital does not give stars – so I’ll say 5, and I’m just left wondering how and why Frans let this one go. I could say much more regarding the detail of both the sound and whole production but just end by saying as clearly as I can if anyone is into noise or art or just beautiful things – get this or weep. Julien Skrobek : Double-entendre
Apr 11th

Wherein Skrobek takes a cue or two from Sugimoto but heads out in an oblique direction. On the first of two tracks, guitar strums isolated in space nod to Taku but the strums are far more colorful and the intervening space, though often silent, is inhabited by gassy rumbles and electronic bleeps. I get something of a slowly whirling constellation image, four or five elements wheeling into “view”, but in a complicate manner, their rhythms not divisible into one another so the entrance of each from the darkness is a surprise. The second is sparser, made up of a handful of electronic sounds (plus the odd, pretty guitar strum), again each circling to the fore, alone or in unpredictable combinations. Something very nice, very unforced about the way Skrobek feeds the elements into the mix; the space between attains a plasticity of sorts. Very thoughtful, very good work.
