Concierto de Carlos Suárez en el Sónar 2009. Barcelona. Spain.
Carlos is a galician composer and ethnomusicogist. He was born in Ourense and he moved to Venezuela in 1967. He would return to Galicia in 2005.
He started his work as a composer in 1986 creating more than 40 acoustic and electroacustic pieces. His research trips in Venezuela began in 1989, actually in the native cultural areas and afro-venezolan, taking recordings and studies about the acoustic biology of the place (soundscapes). He has transcribed more than 36,000 traditional music compasses all around the world. He worked as a FUNDEF (Etnomusicology and folk foundation) researcher, and also as a FINIDEF (Internation Foundation of Etnomusicology and folk) for 10 years. In 2006 he won national culture prize for his book “Los chimbángueles de San Benito”.
Today he works in the development of the soundscapes project escoitar.org
He has participated in several forums and conventions swowing his researchs in Venezuela, Brasil, Colombia, Perú and Spain. Actually his researchs are about composition, etnomusicology and soundscapes. His most important lectures are: âDiferenzas entre a paisaxe gravada, percibida e reveladaâ, âAnálisis e descripción da paisaxe sonoraâ, and âPaisaxes sonoras e composiciónâ.
