Martin Back : Seedlings +

image

Martin Back is a sound/media artist, musician/composer and sonic provocateur living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. He studied film and video at the College of Santa under the tutelage of pioneering media theorist Gene Youngblood and media artist David Stout. He has studied experimental composition and sound art privately with composer David Dunn. Martin’s work is multiplicitous and makes use of drone, graphic and text scores, digital computers and software, custom analog electronics, field recordings, noise, custom instruments, and site specific performance. He performs often in various ensembles in New Mexico, including the Ancestral Groan Liberation Orchestra; the Soundpainting Orchestra of New Mexico; and The Transducers.

‘Cold Front’ is a work for aeolian guitar and drums. Four tracks of wind-powered drum and guitar were recorded and edited together without any manipulation other than editorial selections of pacing and time.

‘Seedlings’ explores heterosexual sex in metaphor of struggle, unity, opposition. Small timbre-particles of a one hour recording of sexual intercourse were processed using phase vocoding techniques and then edited together.

‘Paper Bag Piece’ is….a paper bag.

‘Study for Diaphonous Transforms……’ uses a single recording of my parakeets to further generate new timbres and accompaniments. This work is a sketch for a forthcoming 8 channel diffusion work.

Hybrid Frequency : Seguridad Urbana

image

RECORDED AT VARIOUS CAFES DURING SPRING 2009
KORG DS-10 for Nintendo DS and intro recordings

In this album, I try to express my feelings towards the security in the buses in Bogota, Colombia (My native country ) .
It is also a protest against the politicians that are not doing anything to overcome this challenge in the city.
People in the recording are talking about the way they have been mugged in the buses and how they feel about it. Threatening and mugging passengers at knifepoint, muggers want to steal cellphones and personal belongings. Police tries to do the best , but it is not enough. This situation goes beyond only this and more to the social and political situation in Colombia.

A series of interviews with citizens of Bogota in Colombia are part of the intros in each track.
These are mere explanations about some muggings that have been happening in the mass transportation system of the city (buses).
The artist pretends to portray one face of the daily situations people have to face when commuting to work or home: Muggings at knife point, cell phones and personal belongings are snatched while traveling in the buses.
We the citizens of Bogota want the government to take action to this problem.

Bacillus : Collapse ep

image

Bacillus is Ian Simpson (electronics and tape edits)

All the work realised under this project uses electronics and sound manipulation as its textural medium. Some of the works are improvised and some use a graphic or text scores as their basis. Many use found sounds and field recordings. Some of the original source material has come from Ians very first experiments with tapes and electronics in the 1980âs . Although essentially a studio project there are occasional live performances.

hector rey : linea maginot

image

Savvas Mataxas : Inverz – Slow

image

Inverz is Thessaloniki-born Savvas Metaxas, who runs the excellent Granny Records stable. Influenced by the likes of Fennesz, Pan American, Alva Noto and My Bloody Valentine, Metaxas utilizes acoustic & electric guitars and an arsenal of pedal effects and field recordings, to create a sound rich in texture and panoramic in depth.

‘Slow’ is the third Inverz release to date, a suite of four meticulously crafted long-form compositions that transcend the standard notions of Ambient/Drone.

‘Everything In Order’ bathes in dreamy reverb, like Labradford or Chihei Hatakeyama at their most thoughtful. The title track tantalizingly weaves fretboard scratches, human breath and flickers of static round cut and spliced guitar recalling Fridge at their most experimental. The slide-rule attention to detail of both book ending pieces (‘Home End’ & ‘New Found Lands, New Found Sounds’, on the other hand, shows why Metaxas was hand-picked to collaborate with Greg Haines and perform with Machinefabriek.

A very fine piece of work indeed.

Good Noise Bad Noise : Semiotic Clunker

image

Good Noise Bad Noise are a loose collective of improvising musicians, sound artists and video artists based in the North of the UK. They play a mixture of electroacoustic music and drone based free improvisation mixing processed field recordings and found sound with live instruments and live visuals.

The group was started by Shaun Blezard & John Hall as a laptop duo as a break from their respective solo projects (Shaun with Clutter & John with The Cardboard Lung after they had toured Cumbrian village halls as a duo in 2006. The village halls tour was part of FRED an arts invasion of Cumbria and involved the duo live processing sounds of the halls and their environs into electroacoustic improvisations.

The band have now grown into a multi-media collective and have played many festivals in the UK as well as just returning from their first tour of the US, where they co-headlined a tour with Atlanta based Duet For Theremin & Lap Steel

GNBN have released or have releases planned on Dokuro Records (Italy), Earth Monkey Productions (UK) & Electronic Musik (UK).

Viva La Muerte : Castigo y Expiacion

image

Fernando Perales, musician, performer, writer, cinema critic and box trainer, he was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1971. He is one of the most important figures of the experimental music and avant garde scene of Buenos Aires, in Argentina.

During the second half of the nineties, he took part in the argentinian cult band Reynols, with whom he released more than 15 records and made dozens of participations in experimental and noise records labels from USA, Europe and Japan.

Nowadays, he forms part of the band UL, with an ex Reynols member, Alan Courtis, and the guitarrist Charly Zaragoza. UL is a guitar trio, with a non convencional formation, which uses composition and execution techniques, based on improvisation and in the non semantic difference between noise and musical sounds, in a traditional sense, without an armonic and melodic structure, focusing on working over the timbric and material aspect of sound and noise.
Simultaneously, he goes on with his solo Project named Viva La Muerte, with whom he released in April 2009 his first solo album ‘Necrofilia y Tradicion’ and soon he will release ‘Verguenza y Autocritica’ through Facon Records Label from Argentina.

Viva La Muerte, is a unipersonal orchestra, componed by guitars, tapes, contact mics, irons, garage tools, metal sheets and industrial matrix fallen into disuse, creating a mix of noise, drone and post industrial minimalism.

From 2004, he shared stages with Damo Suzuki (Can), Christof Kurzmann, (Austria), Guilherme Darisbo y Marcelo Armani (Brasil), Luis Toto Alvarez (Chile), Lasse Marhaug, John Hegre, Sir Dupermann, The Golden Serenades, Tore Honore BOE (Noruega), Tom Hovinbole y James Plotkin (USA), Bryan Day (USA), Anthony Milton, Phil Dadson y Sam Hamilton (Nueva Zelanda), Marcel Turkovsky (Alemania).

This is his first release on Electronic Musik

V/A : expansion sonora

modisti 07 expansion sonora

These pieces are presented in
Circuito Electrovisiones 2009

“Circuito Electrovisiones” is not a traditional festival but an “encounter”, and a wide one, as it is stated in its web page (www.electrovisiones.com). DJ “party” events are mixed with “serious” electroacoustic concerts and more. The criteria for the multichannel concert selection was a mixture of the quality of works, style and aesthetic contrast in between pieces and, finally, length. Aesthetic contrast in between pieces was an important element of criteria for the benefit of the audience.

1. Daniel Mayer (Austria) : L Lokale Orbits / Solo 3
2. Clara Maïda (France) : Ipso Facto
3. Tilmal Kuentzel (Germany) : Auscultare
4. Ryan Smith (USA) : No Marble
5. Mark Hannesson (Canada) : Hidden_intensions
6. Ruth Aguirre (Mexico) : inter0010me1010dia0011

Our appreciation to the Fonoteca Nacional, especially when Francisco Rivas for trusting and supporting Circuito Electrovisiones.

TOY BIZARRE – KDI DCTB 216 [DATA#5]

image

Its been only two weeks that I reviewed the previous installment of this series and I noted that “to keep this series interesting and be a bit more different, change is necessary, I think.” Maybe Toy Bizarre is psychic? The fifth one is different. It opens with a looped voice that says ‘sun’, phased along Steve Reich’s ‘Come Out’ and then spoken word. It turns out that this fifth work is all about the human voice. I am sure there is some sort of connection to the weather being here, the word ‘sun’ in the opening piece is of course the best example, but also in the two other parts I seem to detect some connection to the weather. This piece is divided in three clearly distinctive parts, all dealing with looped voices and sparse electronic processing thereof. The phasing of the voice material is not unique but Toy Bizarre uses it in a highly effective manner. This is the big chance in style I was hoping for. Imaginative, strange, sound poetry alike, this is a great piece. Now I am even more curious as to what the rest will bring us. (FdW) Vital Weekly 705

Jude has produced, directed and taught contemporary performance in Chile, U.S.A, Italy, and France. She returned to Australia in 2001 where she now lives and works in Castlemaine, Victoria. In 2004 she founded the live arts organisation Punctum for which she is Artistic Director. In 2007 she established Punctum’s Live Arts incubator where contemporary arts research and practice is supported and presented.

Jude is also currently developing an international cultural exchange and arts research program – In-Habit, in collaboration with regional, metropolitan and international artists, Punctum, and the Abbotsford Convent in Melbourne. “One Square Metre” is one of 11 works that constitute the In-Habit program.

Cédric Peyronnet
Cédric Peyronnet (aka toy.bizarre / ingeos) is a sound artist working since the ’90 around phonography (Field recordings, “sound hunting”…), soundscapes, using the principles of concrete, acousmatic, electroacoustic music.

His work, whose main theme is the exploration of places by sound recording, listening and sound sculpting, take form of compositions and sound pieces (CD, Vinyl … more than forty references published since the ‘90), concerts, sound screenings and sound installations.

His works on soundscapes led him to practice “sound mapping” and implement daily the principles of acoustic ecology. On that part, he is also working from time to time in schools, “teaching” kids (Well, and older…) about our “sound environment” and the importance of the ear.

Cage Cabarrett : Indeterminacy II

image

Cage Cabarrett (aka __________) explores notions of Indeterminacy in art. We are specifically interested in works that perform an unpredictable action through Aleatoricism, Indeterminacy and Intuitive Improvisation. We try to dissolve any fixed properties of music sound into a fluid process and break with the traditional control of the composer over the material. All sounds have equal value: sounds chosen by the composer, by the performer, and all the unforeseen and unpredictable sounds that surround us every day.

Joaquín Gutierrez Hadid : Vending machine

image

The ‘Vending machine’ is the first of a series of works regarding industrial design objects. These machines offer drinks, snacks and hot food. It is to remark that there’s no human intervention in this process besides the buyer’s. For that reason, a track was included with the manteinance services of one of the vending machines to make the whole process visible; the voices of the workers (responsible for the reloading of items inside the machine) including in this conversation the learning of one of them’s work.

The composition attempts to show not only the interaction space generated by a daily moment, but also an analisis of the object itself.
The material was recorded during the first months of 2009 when I started to attend the Urbanism Degree Course. Every morning, in between classes, I used to buy from these vending machines located at the third floor of the building, not crowded, silent and with imponent resonance and visual presence of the machines. This way, I started to bond with this machine on a daily basis.
Field recordings taken at College of Architecture, Design and Urbanism, Universidad de Buenos Aires.

Joséphine Muller & Ian Linter : KHEOSTATIC

image

Composed improvisation, in three acts, around the magnificence of the Man, its origins and its exponential perception.

KHEOSTATIC is an improvised play with a total duration of about three hours trying in an encyclopaedic way to make a sound transcription of several elements which constitute the human reality, in its language, intellectuality and action. In the first part, now published, the human perception was condensed in sound signs of the avant-garde, concrete and electroacoustic, through the recourse to an immediate and proto-metaphysical language, in narrow correlation with the possible conceptuality of the matter and its relations with the spirit. The three KHEOSTATIC‘s parts will be live recorded at La Société de Curiosités, Paris.
