Noteherder and McCloud are a duo based in Brighton, UK. This project was an attempt to fuse two strands of the local experimental music scene, and is based around live performance.

Noteherder is Chris Parfitt who plays Soprano Saxophone for this project, He is also a member of 21 grams and the Free Improv collective Safehouse-Brighton. Chris Parfitt also plays flute and will make convincing noises on most things, instrumental or not.

McCloud plays old synthesizers for this project, he is also a member of ElMaes who have a release on WM Recordings, The cAPSlock 20′s, an occasional stand-in for Terror Wogan and a member of electronic music collective The Spirit of Gravity. McCloud also plays bass and is not so convincing on other instruments. McCloud also made some strange techno records in the early 90′s.

An invisible presence on the recording has been Bartosz Dylewski who as _minimalVector provides the atmospheric real time visual processing that Noteherder & McCloud use when playing live. Bartosz provides the original photograph and _minimalVector processing for the front cover of the CD.

Something entirely novel comes from experimental and conceptual artist disastrato.

“Trs Textual” is a collection of very diverse origins, being improvised, collected and recorded all over Europe over the past 9 years.

The staggering amount of psychological and cultural references in this release truly make it work on a level that you don’t normally expect music to work.

In fact, “Trs Textual” is built from a unique informative perspective that doesn’t take itself too seriously while presenting its internal message:

experimental music has a plethora of directions waiting to be stumbled upon.

Steve Maclean: Frog Bug Guitar Computer

Steve is back with a truly original and unusual CD; very different from his other work – featuring, as the title proclaims, frogs and insects – recorded in the field – and guitar -, all subtly and intelligently processed (which is where the computer comes in); not to alter the sounds so much as to lock them together into complex rhythm and pitch relationships. The result sounds somehow ‘natural’ but yet spookily integrated. Then MacLean treats each track, or episode, differently, coming at them from different angles, sometimes even letting the computer add ‘its own’ percussive parts to the mix. This work, while bearing the hallmarks of complexity and chaos, has a deep underlying order that never quite gives itself up to the analytical side of the brain. A quiet landmark in the fusion of soundscape, performance and computer mediation that breaks new ground in the pursuit of open but organised form.

The latest from Lezet / Throuroof is four timbrally akin pieces that form the transluscent walls of their aural pharmacy. I hear the sound of wet fingers circling around the edges of myriad crystal vials. Meanwhile, a recurring flock of cloned seagulls seem to be the stereo delayed glee club inside this four movement experiment. But then again, maybe it’s not an experiment at all. Maybe L/T fully know what L/T are doing. Through the calculated use of hollowed out and echoic sounds we are drawn into a digital cathedral that is its own glass pipe organ, churning out ethereal hymns. The disciplined palette of sounds used relates to square waves, high frequency attack transients and incidental effects. This non – busy, unspectacular but nonetheless tasteful approach to composition ultimately results in a calming listening experience.

The two pieces are inspired by ‘the light impact on a car wing mirror in motion’ and non-driver Gerard has had the opportunity to observe this day and night. ‘Light Of Day’ is a very silent piece of sounds moving in and out of the mix, recorded at a very low volume. If microsound means nothing to you, then listen to these isolated sounds moving about in a sea of silence that slow is filled with sinewave like sounds. In ‘Front Nights’ there is more ‘action’, and here I think to recognize music instruments. Lots of hiss on some of these sounds, but throughout more happening than in the first piece. Both pieces require an intense listening session, but along the lines of Steve Roden and Roel Meelkop quite enjoyable microsound pieces.

From the very beginnings of his musical activity, Szilrd Mezei (born in 1974) appears both as an instrumentalist and composer (and a conductor of ensemble). He has searched for his creative landmarks in the avant-garde tendencies of classical music, as well as, primarily, in free jazz (in the direction given to the latter by Anthony Braxton), that is, in a broader sense, in improvisation. His creative development has been influenced by the fact that these beginnings took place in the environment of the theatre (in the early nineties, Mezei was writing and performing music for the performances of the theatrical ensemble AIOWA, then for the Jel Sznhz and other formations of the already famous Hungarian-French stage-manager and dancer Jzsef Nagy, who also shares his origins with Mezei, being a member of the Hungarian national minority in Vojvodina, the autonomous region of Serbia), which brought Mezei into a direct relationship with the performance side of music and the possibility of its staging.

Eve Risser has her musical roots in chamber music as a flutist and pianist. While residing in Alsace, France, she merged in to the contemporary and jazz/improvised music world.

Eves multifaceted musical creativity has been heard in various settings, festivals and groups throughout Europe, USA and Japan. She has had the opportunity to play with interesting improvisers in a broad range of contexts, such as in theatre, dance, poetry, children, solo performances, contemporary and live soundtracks to films. Eve’s actual musical researches are based on the exploration of paradoxal piano sounds, on the experimentation of the different delays existing between the improviser and the sound finality, and how all these techniques are scribed in a musical meaning.

Currently Eves musical life is based out of Paris where she is involved in organizing contemporary and improvised music live performances and a festival.

Eve has had the possibility to play with great musicians such as Joel Grip, Yuko Oshima, Caroline Kraabel, Nina de Heney, Michael Zerang, David Stackens, Christine Senhaoui, Sofia Jernberg, Shelly Blake, Charlie Haden, Tim Murphy, Niklas Barn, Adolfo Kaplan, Yan Marezs, Anete Schluenz, Joris Rhl, Seiko Fukushima, John Berndt, Michael Formanek, Gary Thomas, Jaap Blonk, Katt Hernandez, Ron Anderson, Devin Grey, John Hollenbeck, Theo Bleckman, Susan Alcorn, Armand Angster to name a few.

Rafal Mazur, Graduate of State Secondary School of Music in Krakow, in the cello class of Krzysztof Okon. Fascinated with jazz and bass guitar, he studied privately with a KraKow bass player Marek Janicki. At present Rafal Mazur plays acoustic bass guitars custom built to his own specifications by guitar maker Jerzy Wysocki. He has developed an advanced and individual approach to his instrumentand to improvisation in generalin which sonority, extended technic and gesture combine effortlessly in performance. Mazurs uncompromising musical standards are matched by the sophistication of his wit and demeanor on- and offstage.

He has taken an important role in Krakw to support young artists and improvised art and has performed jazz and improvised music in clubs and festivals across Poland and in much of Europe (recently in China) . He is a founder of Improvising Artists – an informal association grouping musicians – improvisers, who promote and create improvised music. Rafal Mazur focuses on cooperation with Keir Neuringer, project PROCESS_Laboratory of Intuition and Ensemble 56 Hunagrain-Polish contemporary jazz band. He is an organizer of Meeting of Improvisers the annual international multidisciplinary modern event.He also studying philosophy at the Jagielonian University and practise Tai Ji.

“Cendres” is an outtake of what must have been an impactful theater play called “La Plnitude des Cendres” (directed by Gatan Lajoye).

Fabrice Planquette, longtime Entity “resident”, was in control of the sonic aspect, of which more technical details can be read in the accompanying pdf (French only).

Suffice it to say, fp delivers in style, bringing us a solid drone work intertwined with a mesmerizing display of the performance’s dialogue.

By the end of the 80s I produced my first vinyl release, Freebasing A For Is Me. An album completely free of any preconception, built as an abstract expressionist soundsculpture. Most of the releases after Freebasing have been based on certain material or a working method or structural principles.

Sometimes because I needed to contain myself within certain boundaries

but most times because I had a certain subject of research in mind (like mono/stereo, or white noise, or the abstraction of human speech).

With this collection of compositions I return to the emptiness of Freebasing.

A Paul Rogers solo bass album on Amor Fati, a new French label. All CDs on the label are issued in not more than 500 copies, and all in unique hand-painted covers. There is no information on the cover or backside at all, as a dual token of both lack of commercial interest and excellent positioning. The record brings a live performance from Rogers in the Muse d’Aquitaine in Bordeaux, France in April 2007, consisting of two tracks : “Being One”, which lasts a little over 70 minutes, and “Being Two”, which lasts a little over 3 minutes. This is, to my knowledge, Roger’s third solo bass release, and one well worth getting if you’re interested in the genre.
