Thomas Wincek : Extended Techniques

Thomas Wincek : Extended Techniques

SF-6009 : 28.07.08

Format : EP

Madison, Wisconsin’s Thomas Wincek takes a break here from his other musical projects (All Tiny Creatures, Collections of Colonies of Bees, and Emotional Joystick) to explore the practice of extended technique. As Wincek discusses in the release’s liner notes, the term is used here to refer not only to traditional physical techniques (e.g. hitting strings with chopsticks instead of plectrums) but also digital processing techniques. While pure experimentation drives the conceptual nature of the project, the resulting tracks are gorgeously melodic, straddling a fine line between composition and improvisation.

Carrier / Lambert / Avenel : Within

Carrier / Lambert / Avenel : Within

CD LR 512

Release date: 2008/06

Single CD (audio): GBP 10.00

“You can hear Franois Carrier’s joy in this recording, using mouthpiece calls, interrupting a bass passage with a biting phrase, reacting to Avenel’s use of the kalimba, or leading the three-way conversations between the musicians with wit and aplomb. His joy is communicative, and spreads to the ensemble sound. Michel Lambert – playing with time, timbre and intensity, never locked in a pattern – pushes the improvisations forward. As for Jean-Jacques Avenel, one would never guess the bass master is a guest here, but instead was always meant to play with Carrier and Lambert, since his huge sound, agile runs and unfailing imagination provide the perfect cement for the trio.”

Francois Carrier: alto and soprano sax

Michel Lambert: drums

Jean-Jacques Avenel: Acoustic Bass

Thuuooom : Aava

Thuuooom : Aava

[thump302]

Aava is effectively the second solo album by Thuoom, released under monicker Thuuooom reserved for his more ambient-y endeavours. Aava (Finnish for “open sea” or “spacious”) is an exploration of long drones in absence of melodies. The album consists of all new compositions apart from ‘science’, which is basically a remix of Thuoom track ‘sci’ appearing on [cycles of sleep] (thump301).

Jose Manuel Berenguer : On Nothing

Jose Manuel Berenguer : On Nothing

ARS HARMONICA AH195

In On Nothing, the grains are fragments of real soundscapes, public transportation, music wind, street demonstrations, hitting casseroles, Cage and Walter Benjamin. Very few times do they show in the general flow of sounds and become recognizable. In this case they become memory images particulary of oblivion which also evokes nothingness. How come that so many lived experiences seem to have been lost for ever?. When at the end nobody recognizes them, they will become part of the void, in complete nothingness.

Jeph Jerman & Tanner Menard – The Now Of Sound

image

Jeph Jerman & Tanner Menard – The Now Of Sound

ah 026

Jeph Jerman and Tanner Menard have unique notions to the world of sound. When meeting in the desert of Arizona, Tanner discovered the unique philosophies that drive Jeph in his ecological recordings. Jeph, in his disinterest in contextualizing sound, has found that music is merely listening to all sonic vibrations. Sound should be experienced wholly, and not isolated by categories. The removal of the formal knowledge of music opens the listeners’ ability to hear, to experience, and to enjoy all vibrations.

‘The Now of Sound’ was created from a synthesis of synthetic bells, written in Supercollider by Tanner, and of desert recordings from Jeph. This amalgamation was then projected with homemade equipment by Jeph, onto the resonant portion of a gong. The resulting frequencies were recorded with a contact microphone, then post processed with basic computer effects.

While ‘The Now of Sound’ is in actuality ‘music’, because of the artistic decisions to alter the sonic vibrations by Tanner, the work still pays homage to the sonic philosophies matured by Jeph. Described by Tanner, ‘The Now of Sound’ is a “meditational work that exists in the sonic stratosphere, the highest and most imaginary harmonics, where real ‘music’ takes place.” With his primary interest in consciousness, Tanner suggests that the listener use ‘The Now of Sound’ to tune their listening environment to include external, and internal vibrations of their sonic surroundings.

Pangea : Combustion Chamber

tn009

The three tracks includes in Combustion chamber are a dark and granulated improvised wall of sounds, plenty of submerge elements that give an emotional feel to the album, I use field recordings of underwater sounds, hard winds, death TV and radio channels playing it as I use to do in my live acts, searching a natural mix between brain and heart.

13 – Inshizzo – Head of Atoms

14 – Bogdan Dullsky – Rift Fractal

15 – Atomhead – Rift

With a strong focus on unique electronic sounddesign and structures, v/a – Vortex has turned into a solid collection of next level sonic wizardry.

All of the artists involved have dedicated an extremely respectable amount of time and effort to sculpt their submission until it was perfect.

Could it be possible that 1 reason for this has to do with the fact that v/a – Vortex was a compilation that simply needed to be made?

Let’s do a quick rundown to get to know these wonderful artists:

Hecq, German sounddesign professional with an admirable discography on labels such as Hymen, Bnkcrsh, …

Otets Dekan, Zoogoo and brother Chlorophyll Fluxbunny, who collaborated intensely on their morphing re-assimilation monster, and who should be known from previous NTT releases.

CCP, aka Yann Hekate of the Italian “Hekate Soundsystem”, in charge of Anarmonia and related promising labels and responsible for a completely alien glitchmorph fest.

Barbarix, a rising UK artist who could previously be heard on BBC’s Mary Anne Hobbs radio show, and who’s also preparing the next Entity release.

Sytrjv, another relatively unknown though very talented knobtweaker from Rome, delivering a complex onslaught of dark experimental rhythms.

Subskan, whose dark, mindcrashing electronics can assimilate any A.I. mutant from a distance, and who created some seriously awesome releases on respected labels such as Belgium’s own Ambivalence Records and Mirex.

La Peste, head of the French Hangars Liquides label, coined the musical term “flashcore” and operates in his own personal sounddimension.

SDK, aka Sedarka, who will one day be like Kazumoto Endo, except better, as his Entity release so charmingly demonstrates.

Binray, who’s merciless track got lifted from the cancelled Phalanx project “Hyperion”, and who also brought you a mesmerizing free release in the past, as well as on labels such as ZOD and Ad Noiseam.

Xanopticon, micro tweaker deluxe, especially known for his insane livesets and ultra-detailed Liminal Space album on Hymen.

Inshizzo, a psytrance vs breakcore duo who rock the Moscow underground partyscene and run the Acidsamovar label, bringing us a speedcore influenced track.

Bogdan Dullsky, aka Quest.Room.Project, a sound project from Moldavia exploring the strange and the bizarre by superimposing the impossible, as with his outworldly Entity release “Room Number”.

Atomhead, aka yours truly!

SUN RA: Media Dreams

image

SUN RA: Media Dreams

(dbl CD)

Companion to Disco 3000, made on the same classic Italian quartet tour with John Gilmore, Michael Ray (trumpet) and the minimal but perfect Luqman Ali (drums). Ra himself plays piano and electronic keyboards, including the mysterious Crumar Mainman, which Ra describes as ‘like a piano, organ, clavichord, cello, violin and brass instruments’ and which also, importantly, has a facility for pre-programmed bass-lines and electronic percussion – which Ra uses constantly and to great effect in this small ensemble setting – and seldom, if ever, elsewhere. The best of this collection (most of CD1) is luminous: very electronic, often rhythmical and melodic, always economical and making every sound count. These tracks are like no other jazz ensemble and, although recognisable as Ra – who else could think of, and then get away with, this – unlike any other Ra ensemble either. Ra makes the machines do amazing, visionary, things while the band exercises restraint, remaining always in focus. Between, there are piano, saxophone, trumpet and drum vignettes, fresh and perfectly judged; this really was a fine band. This places the original vinyl release (and related releases: Sound Mirror and Disco 300) back into the context of the concerts from which they were drawn. An important addition to the Sun Ra canon since it is a rare document of an unusual Ra project that produced three classic late ’70s LPs. Beautifully packaged and well annotated.

Grant Beran – The Another Ones

Grant Beran – The Another Ones

[pmc059] (2008)

This is music made by someone who loves sound. Grant takes his sources and slows them down and fragments them and listens closely to what happens. He loves the grain and whorl, the texture he pulls from his music, and gives to us.

Grant Beran is an intriguing artist and a music lover. His experiments with turntables and junk lead him to the creation of his first album. His taste for recontextualising the music he loves excited me when I listened to his unusual approach to sampled music. A low key maverick.

V/A : In Memoriam Andrey Tarkovsky

V/A : In Memoriam Andrey Tarkovsky

exc015

Musica Excentrica proud to present our new compiliation dedicated to most impressive film-directors of XX century – Andrey Tarkovsky.

In the entire history of cinema there has never been a director, who has made such a dramatic stand for the human spirit as he did. Today, when cinema seems to have drowned in a sea of glamorized triviality, when human relationships on screen have been reduced to sexual intrigue or sloppy sentimentality, and baseness rules the day – this man appears as a lone warrior standing in the midst of this cinematic catastrophe, holding up the banner for human spirituality.

The Genius of modern Russian cinema – hailed by Ingmar Bergman as the most important director of our time – died an exile in Paris in December 1986.

After 22 years, passed from that year we decided to ask Kim Cascone, Astro, Violet, 833-45, Kenneth Kirschner, Astrowind, Pink Twins, Alva Noto, Nobukazu Takemura and Nikita Golyshev what do they think about Tarkovskys phenomenon. This musical answers are now gathered in a big compiliation, and we invite everyone to explore it:

The Little Apocrypha by Kim Cascone (USA)

The Dark Side of The Mirror by Astro (Japan)

Xata by Violet (USA)

Marshlands by 833-45 (Canada)

The originality of sonorities, mixing double sounds, digital effects, innovating mutes, new mouthpieces and other astonishing accessories combine with an original polyrhythmic use of loops. They were recorded live and in one take. To believe this it is imperative to experience his radical performance live in order to see and understand how he achieves this amazing results.

William C Harrington : Noise Noise

2008 William C Harrington (634479764271) (format: CD-R)

Noise, electronics, chaos, disorder – yet somehow beautiful.

William C. Harrington was born in Yonkers, New York. While he was a sophomore in high school, he was working as a professional musician playing parties, roller-skating rinks dances, and more. At Cal State U Dominguez Hills, he studied composition, performance, and electronic music with Richard B. Evans, author of the classic book on John Cage, “The Well Prepared Piano”. He was also influenced by seminars with several composers including Nicholas Slominsky. After leaving college he worked in the wholesale record industry for two years before going on tour. He worked as a keyboard technician for several bands, including Gentle Giant, before beginning a three year working relationship with Frank Zappa. (This included three America tours, two European tours, spending several months in the studio working on the album “Baby Snakes” and making a brief, credited appearance in Zappa’s movie, “Baby Snakes”). He was with Zappa in Paris when Pierre Boulez first visited.

fonik – resonating

image

fonik – resonating

(emp053)

Formed in 1999 as a duo, Fonik (originally Psychiatric Challenge) became a quartet in 2001. Working essentially with free improvisation / experimental noise using prepared guitars and electronics, pieces were recorded live in whatever location was possible at the time.

In 2006 Fonik became a core duo again with an even more uncompromising approach, blurring the boundary between music, noise and art.

Performances are generally as a duo but occasionally as a trio or quartet depending on situation / availability of the occasional contributors listed below. The duos background is varied coming from jazz, avant garde, post rock, industrial and new music with many years of playing and performance hours between them.

Material recorded is occasionally reworked with various sound editing techniques bringing a completely new angle to the material. Its kind of a combination of traditional improvisation techniques combined with diy technology. These reworks are done in real-time, this becoming an improvisation in itself, with parameters being tweaked as and when required.

Recently Fonik have presented the films Nosferatu and Das Kabinet providing a live improvised soundtrack (Manchesters Green Room completely sold out) and are currently working on a re-edit of Metropolis for 2008. Nosferatu with 5 accompanying soundtracks will soon be available on DVD from Electronic Musik.

Fonik are also making appearances as part of Manchester musicians collective Gnod. Gnods line-up shrinks and swells as the music rotates & expands to reach new frontiers and quite possibly other worlds.

Members are also part of DIY promoters the Warrington Improvised & Experimental Music Collective who regularly stage live performances of visiting artists.

Ian runs the Electronic Musik CDr label which has an equally uncompromising approach in choice of releases.

Fonik are: Harry Gallimore electronics / percussion :: Ian Simpson prepared lapsteel / percussion

Occasional contributors: Pascal Nichols – percussion :: Dave Jackson sax / reeds :: Tim Lyons trumpet / voice

Henrique Iwao & Mrio Del Nunzio – Dance Music

image

Henrique Iwao & Mrio Del Nunzio – Dance Music

(ca153) (July 9, 2008)

The album contains pieces by the composers Mrio Del Nunzio and Henrique Iwao, composed specifically for dance performances.

Mrio Del Nunzios words about the album:

In the musical works I have so far developed for dance, it was clear that the music would have absolute autonomy in its conception (except for its legnth), and this technical and esthetical autonomy was expected by the directors I’ve worked with; but, at the same time, some dramaturgical-thematic content was to be shared, thus, the final work being constituted by these two parallel visions attributed to a pre-determined subject.

Both my works present in this album,”Vermelho” and “Down the rabbit’s hole ou Pourquoi tu pleures?”, were composed for dances directed by Melina Scialom.

The first piece, “Vermelho”, uses fragments from sound sources in some way related to the color red (“vermelho”, in portuguese), and is also structurally symbolically related to such color (using proportions from Luigi Nono’s “Il canto sospeso”). These fragments were submitted to extensive and detailed treatments, resulting in some thousands of different sound files – which makes the timbral differentiations of sounds from the same (or, at least similar) sources a determinant factor in the constitution of the piece.

The other piece is entirely based on recordings of myself playing the piano, which had previously defined harmonic structures, as well as highly energetic explosive improvisation; its sections are defined by their gestural typology, by different degrees of electronic transformation of the piano sounds and by the hierarchical distinctions between layers of processed and unprocessed sound material.

Henrique Iwaos words about the album:

Dance Music cause it’s the rythim of the night. Music for dance since in the beggining of myself electronics and movement. And all those Humphrey classes and Contact jams and a Forsythe workshop done somewhat a dancer. Also, I’ve never met someone who goes to the dance theatre as one would normally go to the movies. And I still worry that every work should move.

My first electronic music; it is the 5th version of the soundtrack for the dance “Ensaio Sobre Eu2″ – by Melina Scialom {track 03}.

The “French Trilogy” (based in works for dances by Juliana Frana): I. The first part of the soundtrack for the dance “Sobre a Pausa” {track 05}; II. A song made using fragments from the second part of the same choreography plus spoken words by Lucas Arajo (from another music of mine – “Filme Tosco”) {track 02}; III. A music that uses as compositional material the soundtrack (made together with Lucas Arajo) for the dance-video “Sorriso a Menos 10″ {track 06}.

Sobras do InLudere Dana da Laranja has its origin in an unused soundtrack piece for the dance “InLudere” – by Ana Carolina Sotratto, Carla Sandim, Nina Giovelli & Juliana Frana, directed by Joana Lopes {track 04}.

Mrio Del Nunzio (1983, So Paulo, Brazil). Composes electroacoustic and instrumental music, plays with improvisation and non-written music groups, and also works as an interpreter of contemporary music (electric guitar and live-electronics).

Henrique Iwao (1983, Botucato, Brazil). Composes electroacoustic and instrumental music; plays with improvisation and non-written music groups (piano, keyboards and electronics); does soundtracks for dance. Produces experimental music events in So Paulo.

Steve Peters : Filtered Light

image

Steve Peters : Filtered Light (chamber music 4)

de5017

Duration: 60:00

Format: 5″ CD-R

Edition: 250

Year: 2008

Press Release: PDF

Chamber Music is a series of site-specific sound installations derived from recordings of the empty rooms in which the work is exhibited. No people are present, so the only sounds recorded are those that are incidental to the building itself, or those that leak in from outside. These recordings of ambient room tone are processed to isolate subtle resonant frequencies that become the only materials of the piece. Aside from equalization and gating, no other electronic treatments or instruments of any kind are used. Every version of the piece is different, due to the acoustic and architectural characteristics of each venue.

Filtered Light was made in 2008 for the University of New Mexico Art Museum, in conjunction with the annual UNM Composers Symposium. Fourteen frequencies between 70 Hz and 3 kHz were extracted from an unedited hour-long recording made in the empty gallery. That hour was divided into thirty-two segments of varying length that recombined randomly in the continuous four-channel installation. The mix heard here represents one set of possible combinations. A low playback volume is recommended.

Etienne Michelet : “calendaires II”

fdd#07

Calendaires II is a dance music.
