Rose Red : Last Day Of Sun E.P.

[AMR135]

Barrow, Alaska, at the very top of the state, has a two-month winter period in which the sun doesn’t rise. On November 18 or 19 the sun goes down, and remains below the horizon for about 65 days until it re-appears, normally on January 22 or January 23. During the time of polar night there is a decreasing amount of twilight each day, and on winter solstice, December 21 or December 22, civil twilight in Barrow lasts for a mere 3 hours.

DIATRIBES : instant daprs

DIATRIBES with DRAGOS TARA and PIERO SK :’instant d’aprs

insubcdr03/moremars06

DIATRIBES:

Diatribes, a strongly libertarian ensemeble, began its existence in a Geneva basement in Winter 2004. Their idea was to mix three distinct types of sound (electronic, wind and percussion), in order to develop a malleable musical mass. The saxophone and drums merge into each other in a primary dance, where construction and deconstruction coexist, and envy and disgust unite. There are no limits to their sound, where rhythms, melodies and noise meet sporadically, merging into each other until they are almost forgotten. Free jazz in its approach, acoustic and electronic in its execution, the trio is capable of exploring the minute like the intense. Their relationship with the public is intimate and profound. Dreams and fears become noise and silence…

Initialy a trio with Gal Riondel on saxophone, diatribes became a polymorphous fromation, extending its spectrum to other musicians such as the guitarist Christian Graf, the electroacoustician Nicolas Sordet, the pianists Jacques Demierre and Johann Bourquenez,

DRAGOS TARA:

Dragos Tara was born in 1976 in Bucarest, but has lived in Switzerland since the age of 5. He studied double bass at the conseratory in Montreux and Lausanne, From to 2002 to 2007, he studied composition and electroacoustics at the conservatory in Geneva.

After discovering many different musics (rock, jazz, classical, balkan music) he he is now active in many groups of improvised music : Hibiki (Laurent Bruttin, cl./CH, Kim Myhr., gt/ Norw.), a duo with Sbastien Roux (FR/electronic.), l’Ensemble Silence (live music for silent movies), KikU*2 4tet.

Dragos has realized different projects: Performance for musiciens, dancers et electronics in the former jails of Vevey (2005) ; Jeu : duel musical pour double-quartet (2004), solo concerts and a doublebass quartet.

He has also written music for various ensembles: Ensemble Vortex, compagnie CH.AU, llorkestra, Bolouris 5tet, Ostermundigen symphonic Orchestra .

PIERO SK:

Piero SK is a personage born approximately 10 years ago, on a table of writing. He is an autodidact and work in theatre, writing and music. He collaborated in particular with Monsieur Jean, Nol Akchot, Saadet Trkz, Jacques Demierre, Jacques Roman, Wilbert de Joode, Obak, AbSTRAL compost, la Gale, Vernacular, Jeudi, Rue du Nord. Its biography is variable, its room is populated by shadows.

joseba irazoki : negurdin ep

joseba irazoki – negurdin ep

[cnv49]

The subdued crying of a small child resonating within the strings of Joseba Irazoki’s guitars is accompanied by the dirgelike vocalizations of Joseba Irazoki himself, bringing – betwixt its mechanical manipulations and its electroacoustic hue – this guitar’s impending sense of blue(s) even more to the fore. A highly versatile player within a variety of musical contexts, this instance finds him showcasing some unadulterated porch-chair fingerpickin’, strings rife with the complexities of self-dialogue and reflection, ‘losing it’ and howling ever so lovingly to the moon.

Monique Buzzarte & Ellen Fullman : Fluctuations

Deep Listening Institute DL-CD-38

Monique Buzzart and Ellen Fullman began working together in June 2005. These collaborative compositions are rooted in tonalities that unfold with unexpected possibilities. Buzzart’s trombone navigates and merges through an infinite array of distinct overtones from Fullman’s Long String Instrument. With slight timbral variations and pitch juxtapositions, sympathetic resonances articulate overtone colorations and threads of resultant melodic fragments emerge and intertwine.

jeremy bible & jason henry – glare

rb032

Description

Jeremy Bible and Jason Henry are two productive artists based in Canton, Ohio, an area of the United States referred to as the rust belt due to its rapid industrial decline. Similar to their surroundings which contrast rural farmland against decaying industrial landscapes, the duo contrast various sounds and styles in ways that can be compared to the elegant and subtle color contrasts created by painters of fine abstract-expressionist art. Utilizing field recordings, found sounds, acoustic instrumentation and electronic soundscapes, their compositions take place in the wide field of musique concrete, experimental acoustic music, and electronic sound design.

glare is a huge piece of modern contemporary music. 5 tracks, about 60 minutes duration.

From the first track, you can almost grab the intense and exciting spirit, being inherent in these pieces. Dark and gloomy melodies meet abstract glitches, lost radio frequencies, mysterious field recordings and other interferences. With all these ingredients, Jeremy and Jason create warm, nostalgic, and at times frightening scenery.

It smells like old basements, dusty treasure chests, old physical instruments and yellowed pictures from your grandmothers photo album.

The duos growing catalog of sound paintings, each creating a new experience, will see release through a growing list of labels including Resting Bell, Gruenrekorder, Abgurd, Gears of Sand, and their own imprint, Experimedia.

sophie agnel / phil minton : tasting

at02

sophie agnel – piano

phil minton – voice

Recorded live at the June 2006 Jazz Poitiers festival this little gem features the work of two truly extraordinary musicians, both of

whom are giants from a technical and creative point of view: Phil Minrton and Sophie Agnel, an unusual and very welcome pairing

in that ceaselessly changing world which is the improv scene. The former is well-known, and has the weight of many years experience

on his shoulders, but refuses to give up and continues indomitably to explore the outer possibilities of the human voice. He is now

plumbing its most hidden depths, often gratingly, but perhaps necessarily so, regressing to the most basic instincts from which he

can ultimately progress and evolve.

This is one of the best piano/vocals duos that Ive ever heard….No assertion can really express the wealth of minute details and the stunning reciprocal reactivity that identifies this splendid record. – Massimo Ricci – Touching Extremes

Arian Shafiee – Strange Loops

(ca132) (May 19, 2008)

The compositions within “Strange Loops” are not based off of

preconceived ideas. The only relative theme (if you feel the need to

classify) is loops with lack of motion which slowly permutate into

nothing. All sounds were created through guitar except the samples

from “Concrte” which consist of varying electronic alterations of the

Angelus bell pattern. Arian Shafiee is a guitarist/ composer currently

residing in Oakland, California. He also enjoys jazz and taking

experimental music light heartedly in comparison to his colleagues.

John Young – Lieu-temps

image

John Young – Lieu-temps

Empreintes DIGITALes IMED 0787

John Young (1962) is one of those prolific and talented New Zealand sound artists, whom we have come to appreciate very much. Personally I raised an eyebrow over his humorous and discerning electroacoustic text-sound piece Sju, which recently was released on a CD called New Zealand Sonic Art 2000 from The Music Department of Waikato University in Hamilton, New Zealand. That piece deals with the different pronunciations of the Swedish word sju, which means seven. It is very hard for any English-speaking person to pronounce the word in a sensible way, but even within Sweden there are at least two major ways of pronouncing it in fact according to social class, usually! and a number of minor deviations from those major ways. John Young discovered the peculiarities of this word while residing in Sweden for a while some years ago, and hid deliberations turned into a little masterwork!

Il Buono Il Brutto Il Cattivo: tudes

Alexis Bellavance, Nicolas Bernier, rick d’Orion – Il Buono Il Brutto Il Cattivo: tudes

[nt112]

The universes of Alexis Bellavance, Nicolas Bernier & rick dOrion are all radically different from one another: one exhibits a conceptual slant, the second is prone to work meticulously, & the third is known for his high-energy strokes. What happens when destiny force these three to work together? Maybe what we get is this improvised, unpredictable exchange, which for this reason bears a subtle affinity to that famous Sergio Leone film Well leave it up to you to guess which is the good, the bad & the ugly

Nicolas Bernier

Nicolas Bernier has been initiated to musical creation through popular music. His curiosity quickly brought him to electroacoustic composition, which he studied at the Universit de Montral in the classes of Robert Normandeau and Jean Pich. His love of experimentation inspired him to develop acousmatic composition, live electronics, installation and video art as well as music for dance and cinema. In the midst of this eclecticism, however, his artistic concerns remain constant: the balance between the cerebral and the sensual and between organic sound sources and digital processing. An inspired artist, he created the duo Milliseconde topographie in 2004 alongside composer Delphine Measroch. In 2006, he also created the artist collective Ekumen. He has won many awards for his works that have been broadcast in many festivals such as LEspace du son (Belgium), Akousma (Qubec), DotMov Festival (Japan) et Transmediale (Germany). →

Heath Watts / Dan Pell : Breathe if you can

Heath Watts / Dan Pell : Breathe if you can

CD LR 506 – LEO RECORDS

This is the first CD in Leo Records catalogue by Heath Watts (soprano saxophone) and Dan Pell (drums). Watts calls his method of playing and composition NODOT (Non-Objective Dynamically Ordered Tones). The music is ‘Non-Objective’ because, like visual artist W. Kandinsky, Watts believes that art, including music, does not have to represent anything tangible in the real world. When Watts improvises, he focuses on pure sound and how tones fit together, resulting in ‘Dynamically Ordered Tones’. Dan Pell is a perfect partner for Heath Watts.

Sylvie Walder und Siegmar Fricke – Nahtod

image

Sylvie Walder und Siegmar Fricke – Nahtod

(ca131) (May 15, 2008)

Nathod, or near-death-experience, is the phenomenon of absolute detachment from our actual being encompassed in fears, ego-mania, weaknesses and false wisdom. It leads to an out-of-body-experience offering the opportunity to watch the inner tree of life (Yggdrasil) from outside.

Nahtod, a collaboration between Sylvie Walder and Siegmar Fricke, intends to describe the withering of the tree of life as in neurosis or other traumatic states. Using the drones from Sylvie Walder as a basis for the electronic textures, Siegmar has constructed paranormal ambiences reflecting the different stages of detachment eventually leading to a new conscience gained in fear and pain. As the world is slowly collapsing outside, it is time to turn inwards. An acoustic sign for the world in its final stage.

Lisle Ellis: Sucker Punch Requiem

image

Lisle Ellis: Sucker Punch Requiem – An Homage to Jean-Michel Basquiat

Music composed by Lisle Ellis, is a delight and surprise. Translating the work of a young visual artist into a musical palette takes some doing, and Ellis does it with great imagination, integrity, and beauty; all those traits exuded by Basquiat as well. More than just fine notes, Ellis and the other musicians portray the passion of art, music, life and its vicissitudes thereof. Certainly Basquiat experienced many of those in his way-too-short life. The music radiates experience, anguish, joy: all the demands and rewards of quotidian life as it unfolds. Some stages/phrases are rough, some smooth; some improvised, some composed; some last awhile and some are fragmented into bits. All are inherent and necessary to creative existence.

And creative this is . . . Sucker Punch Requiem.

d´incise – Les Restes du Festin

image

d’incise – Les Restes du Festin

tube’|123

Rhythms that bleed. Rhythms that rust and fall apart. Rhythms that fracture your perception of time. D’incise’s decompositional approach is charged with an electricity that turns actual objects into distorted images. At times, you will find your neck’s vertebrae moving back and forth to keep a time only existant in your mind. In the collaborative nature of “Les Restes du Festin”, we can hear micro-cuts from various improvised music recordings of Johann Bourquenez (piano), Christian Graf (guitare), Christophe Berthet (saxophones), Gal Riondel (saxophones), Cyril Bondi (drums) and d’incise (piano and percusions). In addition, we can hear the talented intervention of Lena, Bluermutt, Hopen, Ibakusha, and Monsieur Connard.

Here, electronic thoughts are translated into numerous acoustic dances to the point of loosing distinction. Dancing thoughts of electronic motion. A grand piano that stands up as anthropomorphic figure to interact and dialogue with the player. Frequencies that tickle the tympanic membrane in order to descend through the eustachian tube reverberating eternally. Binary codes that materialize into percussive instruments; number ones as drumsticks, and zeros as bass drums.

Dusty pieces of metal falling through a waterfall of sound waves until they reach the depths of an ocean of noise. Water ripples become multicolored threads that float around a beam of light. Mercury plugs that melt when plugged into amplifiers. Unidentified Flying Objects that become cymbals and give a message about phenomenal spaces. Static hairs follicles that abandon the skin to encounter the vibrations coming from the speakers. These are some of the visions I receive when listening to this sonic constructions. Micro-cuts from a macro-musician. – Sebastian Alvarez

CD LR 508 – LEO RECORDS : 2008/03

This is the fifth CD by The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra on Leo Records. American Agonistes is a testimony to the fact that the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra goes from strength to strength. The conductor and composer Mark Harvey writes: “Agonistes comes from the Greek word ‘agon’ and conveys a sense of contest, struggle, even painful experience. American Agonistes is about the struggle for the soul of our constitutional democracy amid world tension and conflict; and it stands within the long tradition of music addressing larger social and political issues”.
