Gunnar Geisse electric guitar

A mysterious work of electric guitar & bass, signal processing, field recordings and voice. Using tonal textures and unusual punctuation, Geisse builds intense and encompassing sound spaces that use spatial actions to great effect, with sparse delivery of recordings and other interventions. Impressive work, paced for the benefit of his rich sonic world, creating a surprisingly psychedelic side-effect. Gunnar Geisse has worked with Phil Durrant, Barry Guy, Franz Hautzinger, Wilbert de Joode, Jason Kahn, Thomas Lehn, Gnter Mller, Phill Niblock, Evan Parker, &c. &c.

kanada brothers – broken silver

tlhotra025 (March 29, 2008)

It’s known that the cardiac center in the brain is responsible for controlling the heart rate. These electrical impulses is what makes the heart beat. I imagine and would like to explain broken silver with a reversible reaction. Electrical impulses from the heart up to the brain. And furthermore how these signals get register with a EKG machine who generate sine waves that looks like arguing lines talking in some kind of secret language. Imagine this and you get an idea how broken silver sounds like.

Kanada brothers is Claus Haxholm, a musician from Denmark. He study on the Royal art academy in Copenhagen. He also makes music under the names: “dead black arms” “Claus Haxholm Jensen” “the doom riot” and “Taiko Oroshi”.

Achim Kaufmann – piano, Frank Gratkowski – clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet and alto sax, Wilber de Joode – bass, belong to the “older” school of Dutch and German improvisors. Cordell Klier : going forth by day

[CYC-026]

Gentle. Deep. Freeing. The masterful qualities shed the old growth of their evocative skins like flowers of frequency. Dropping pedals to nurture the tender foreground of an ever-awakening hopeful landscape. Post digital sputtering ala the late 90?s glitch movement, mixed with an ambient attitude, interwoven into a tapestry of cosmic ease and passive conventional comfort. Cordell Klier shines as usual with this breezy spring-inspired document.

?Going Forth By Day? is a light hearted notion rising out of a generally somber performer. The audio concepts are color filled, bright and inspiring, leaving the listening with a feeling of pure luxury. Almost like your newly decorated loft in the town you?ve always loved. Crack open that bottle of red, kick back and enjoy.

Audio Gourmet – Earth’s Exit Door

[wh098]

Recorded and produced by:

Audio Gourmet (H. Salsava)

Cover Illustration by Will Kelly

Audio Gourmet returns to Webbed Hand with a conceptual ambient album called Earth’s Exit Door. These very subtle soundscapes reveal a lot of detail the closer you listen.

01 Inverted Nucleus (08:25)

02 Artificial Intelligence (08:56)

03 Hydrogen (12:54)

04 The Mist Before Sunrise (06:11)

05 The Day Of The Tremor (07:37)

An explanation of the concept according to H. Salsava:

EARTH’S EXIT DOOR

“Check the sytem, reboot the brain. Re-install the software and

continue with lifes game; just be sure to avoid Earth’s exit door…”

INVERTED NUCLEUS

An inverted nucleus created itself by accident or chance. They have no concept of being self aware; they are merely organic cell making engines. Cell-making engines multiply and divide to create more complex life forms that are driven at the core by an inverted nucleus.

A defected nucleus is unstable, becasue they have the inverse to a rational DNA coding that would otherwise create a stable life form. This means, potentially, that two identical nuclei can be inverted and create totally different organic masses due to the complexity and nature of the DNA coding that has become irrationalised within the cell:

One inverted or defected nucleus could produce an organism that struggles to function in any way and will cease to exist, while the other will experience the opposite effects and the proteins generated by this inverted DNA will create cells and biological functions that will thrive in harmony, thus giving birth to inverted life or ‘dark life’, as has become the popular term. If allowed to flourish, this dark life will seek out higher and greater goals as intelligence is evolved and will thus begin the quest to better itself, just as its brother, the original nucleus had already achieved.

This could well be the origin of life in the universe: if you could imagine a biological big-bang that created the first ever nucleus and DNA strands. Thus, just like the universe that acts as the womb for all life, ever destroying and creating itself in an infinty of big-bangs and big-crunches. Life cycles on within, on its own oscillating path of self creation and self destruction.

Human beings, having evolved considerably through extensive mutation, are constantly searching for ways to escape this constant cycle and live in sustained harmony. Striving to keep the ‘exit door’ shut, if you will.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Ceasing to exist after only a brief ephemeral period of time is something of immense contention for humans, as they wish to remain on the planet and keep the ‘exit door’ shut.

Others want to escape through the ‘exit door’, through a spiritual connection and live for eternity that way. Searching for a ‘higher source’.

Through means of science and research, we are able to understand more of our existence and are able to create ways of making it easier, and our goals more attainable.

A created intelligence aids a life full of perplexing and menial problems/tasks; it is designed to alleviate some of life’s hardships. As humans, we realise how small our existance is and thrive to expand our perception in order to expand our knowledge and technology and potentially develop a solution to keeping the ‘exit door’ shut.

HYDROGEN

Water is an element SO crucial for sustaining the existence of any life-form. We all need it to stay hydrated, to stay hygienic and to stay healthy.

This point cannot be emphasised enough; water is absolutely paramount for us to exist.

However, by complete contrast, it has wiped out hundreds of species in the form of regular ice-ages that destroy most living things. Ice is stored water, in frozen form.

It is fascinating, that one of the most vital elements we require to exist can be equally as lethal to man-kind.

THE MIST BEFORE SUNRISE

‘The mist before sunrise’ is a metaphor for the human fear of the unknown. An un-specified quantity is the most daunting prospect for a human being.

As humans, we like to accurately predict the outcomes in life and if the eventuality of something is clouded, we are not sure how to react. We learn from our experiences, some of which are mistakes, so it is necessary for our development to confront them.

Every discovery ever made will have entailed some element of risk. Sometimes, what may have seemed like a huge obstacle can turn out to be a worthwhile and positive discovery. An element of informed caution is of course to be taken on board, as for each chance of a positive outcome, there is an equal chance of a

negative one…

THE DAY OF THE TREMOR

It is amazing that a seemingly ‘perfect’ day can be mutilated into destruction by the means of a natural disaster. In one unpredictable fell swoop, our state of contentment can be wiped out completely. As advanced as the human race has developed, a natural disaster will wipe out our creations, possessions, experiments and ultimately, some of mankind.

Those who have not experienced an earthquake will struggle to fully empathise with those who have been affected by its grave consequences. It’s the survivors of such destruction that know the real value in life – to stay alive, breathing and at least staying clear of Earth’s Exit Door…

TOMASZ KRAKOWIAK : LA CIUTAT ETS TU

image

TOMASZ KRAKOWIAK : LA CIUTAT ETS TU

ETUDE015

Tricky once commented that he enjoyed listening to lyrics he couldn’t quite understand: The missing parts made you zoom in even more attentively, enhancing the experience. While I see the point in defining the concept or technical procedure behind a particular recording, I have likewise always felt a preference for artists who did not feel the need to explain every single detail. „La Ciutat Ets Tu“, too, profits from its non-disclosing policy.

Nothing but two short sentences provide scant information on the equipment used for the album: „All music performed and recorded by Tomasz Krakowiak 2007. Tools: Percussion and Microphone Placements.“ When the album opens with the wobbling undulations of „bal“, that is hard to believe. A question rises from the ashes of this stuttering, stumbling tribal tour de force: How did he do it?

Even after several spins, it remains hard to say. Krakowiak appears to make use of a vast array of metal objects and drums, from concrete sources such as cymbals and toms to bowed blades, gyrating discs, loose objects inside cannisters and grinding machines. The big mystery is whether or not overdubs were used in the performance process, as individual tracks seem to both play against each other at times and to be continually transformed over the duration of a piece.

In the absence of a fully convincing rationale, the music itself gains the upper hand. Krakowiak is not a deconstructionist, he may (or not) use his percussive instruments in uncoventional ways, but he still does so to create a new sense of rhythm, which either manifests itself as grating steps (the title piece), as rippling movement („drgacze“) or as a sawing sensation, which gradually melts into a high-pitched shreek („sink“). The odd exception to the rule is the dark ambient texture of „o_vbrdub“, but it is quickly replaced by the harsh noise perturbations of „aigua per A“.

There is an immense concentration behind all tracks, a notion of complete control even in moments when things seem to adhere to the logic of chaos. This turns „La Ciutat Ets Tu“ into an almost meditative affair, despite its occasional dynamic outbursts and eclectic diversity. Whatever Tomasz Krakowiak may be doing here, he is surely doing it according to plan.

Scrap Heap – Reverse Eruption

[treetrunk040] (March 18, 2008)

Unstable, gradually evolving organic, volcanic feedback. Hot geyser sprays erupt and fizzle before giving way to a deep earth-moving rumble with an intermittent crackling, as of a fire.

“Reverse Eruption” is a longform generative piece that came about as the result of my experimenting with audio software. I set the starting parameters for a series of delays, oscillators, and other effects, let the system run until it became imperceptibly quiet, and this wrote itself. It’s 70 minutes long, with some very faint sound left in at the end that may seem silent, in hopes you might feel it in the air.

Treetrunk likes this piece by Scrap Heap– it fits right in with the label. Enjoy!

Adrián Juárez – Planicie Corrediza

Adrin Jurez – Planicie Corrediza

tube |115

Runtime: 24’55”

Adrin Jurez is a sound experimentalist from Buenos Aires, Argentina and he has been working with different sound languages since 2005. Not long but he has already spawned an impressive number of solo and collaborative works since then. Adrin works with various genres and sytles, ranging from IDM, vocal music, ambient, post rock and experimental to orchestral music, afro, percusion, latin american folk and others.

‘Planicie Corrediza’ is one of his most recent works to be filed under improv./experimental, and one that test tube has the immense pleasure to release. With mysterious titles like ‘Batanonabitidolac’ or ‘Cadoltibina’, this EP is roughly 25 minutes of pure, unadultered ordinary and out of the ordinary sounds. Adrin uses water and dirt, bubbles and sand, cardboard boxes, wood planks and pieces, acoustic guitars in pure agony, tin cans, plates and glasses, bassdrums, chimes and whistles, voices and throat sounds, PVC tubing and a whole lot more that cannot be effectively described – we can only imagine. This sound architecture results in completely organic non-music, non-compositions, incidentally without any narrative but telling us some kind of story at the same time. Music from the earth, from within a house, from someone else’s day or night, music built like a tree-house where we keep adding pieces of wood and metal and found parts and it gets bigger and different and special every time we add something new. Every object has its own life and produces its own distinctive familiar or unfamiliar sound. This is improvisation music made out of unorthodox instruments at its best, and the experience of listening to it is more than special, it’s an experience – Pedro Leito

These pieces were developed in the last four years. A mixture of algorithmic and handmade music. I am using generative graphic-tools together with granular systhesis to transform sound.

After 4 years, the distance to this music is completely lost. This paralyzes my thinking. When I try to have thoughts, they seem to be like a foreign substance. And totally out of place. By the way, also emotions. Finally I had searched my notes and correspondece of the last years for thoughts who are coherent with the development of this music. They are text tracks, not in the way of listening as long as they are read, as a hint to the character of the space from out of which the music emerged.

Who could survive physically without the spine of self-deception – and who should have interest in breaking it for the subject? But at the same time, the deception should be what it is – an illusion, which has to be figured out in case there are self-endangering enticements come from it.

A lot is getting lost acustically masked, it doesnt make its way to the inner ear. What is not hearable, its vanished under the massif of sound. It is as if here the listening make the hearing impossible.

Edition 50

All living organisms emit electrical signals which can be recorded with a process similar to human ECG or EEG. These tiny voltages are outside the human range of hearing, but can be rendered audible through the process of audification. Firstly bioelectrical signals are digitized into EDF (European Data Format) files which can be easily stored and exchanged. Then the signals contained in EDF recordings maybe extracted into wav files with custom made software. Bioelectrical files are the sound source of these compositions. A quiet listening environment or headphones recommended.

“Shinkei likes to play with the perception of sound, moving on the edge of audibility, exploring the empty spaces between sounds. Usually a new project is developed with each release to experiment with different, unusual sound sources: computer simulated brainwaves, recordings of biological signals, or the snow falling over a microphone… Shinkei compositions

Release Date : 17.03.08

Format : full-length

Madison, Wisconsin based composer and Cycling ’74 researcher Gregory Taylor composed the two pieces on offer here by applying spectral averaging and a structure inspired by systems music to source material taken from a recording of the gamelan piece Danaraja. All talk of the process (as documented in Taylor’s extensive liner notes) aside, the end result is two pieces of exquisite beauty: the first a flowing miasma of bell-derived drones which resonate peacefully even as they twist and turn, and the second a bouncing series of reverb-drenched tintinnabulation.

Witty acoustic improv from this duo on trombone and percussion. Mller is a suprisingly sly player with an extensive vocabulary, from weird breathy jumbling to long twisting and joyous runs. Marien plays in, around, under and on the drums, generally preferring the sound of toms, and deftly underplaying the moment while keeping the music active and unexpected. Julien Skrobek Le Palais Transparent

image

Julien Skrobek Le Palais Transparent

FREE SS 03 (November 1, 2007)

Elegance is the first word that comes to my mind to describe the “Le Palais Trasparent”. Julien Skrobek expands the paths of Radu Malfatti and Taku Sugimoto exploring time and structure by placing sinewaves and guitar notes that brake the very rich silences. Carefully constructed, “Le Palais Trasparent” creates absorbing spaces that produce calm and intelligently suspended tensions.

‘Audicity under Debian’ is what is said on the cover of the release by one Julien Skrobek. Into ‘Audicity under Debian’ he feeds the sound of guitars and sine waves. Here too there is a clever interplay of sound and silence,

although it doesn’t work like a competition as with Mattin. It’s not either very loud or total quietness with Skrobek. The plays loose notes on the guitar, followed by lengthy chunks of silence. As soon as the sound of the guitar

sounds, there is also the sine wave hissing and peeping about. The sounds aren’t as loud as with Mattin. Certainly no easy work here going on. There is lots of silence, with very occasional and irregular intervals of sound, which

makes this a highly sort of Japanese styled release. Full attention is required for this one, otherwise you might be easily lost. But it’s certainly a very fine work too. Both of these make the series quite interesting.
