STEVE MACLEAN, : Bridges

(dbl)

These recordings collect together works spanning two decades of composition and experimentation that balance traditional musical resources (the band, compositional skills, instrumental techniques, acoustic and amplified instruments) and the new technologies (computers, software, processing). The first CD showcases polyrhythmic, careful compositions (like those on his last ReR CD, Opposite of War), which still no-one has tried to emulate. The second is more meditative, abstract and electronic, moving from Kora through electric and acoustic guitars – with and without radical effects processing – to piano and virtual orchestra, putting various softwares through their paces.

Cory Allen – Satori in Atlantis

Cory Allen – Satori in Atlantis

tube 104

Runtime: 30’00”

As you struggle to stop your thoughts, you can still hear the conversation of some neurons. Sometimes they sound like little pieces of metal sliding over a self-constructed organism, or granular rings that create ephemeral vibrations. In any case, they lead you into a psychic silence where you are able to listen to a higher consciousness. The enlightenment and awakening of your being brings you the true nature of creation. As you listen, you can create a new world formed of legendary islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, pleasantly sink into deep waters, or embrace your own neurological research. Once you find yourself floating, “Satori in Atlantis” allows this experience to last longer and create new beginnings to deeply understand the world you imagined. With this insightful sonic production, you are able to associate and assemble the wisdom of eastern philosophies and quantum mechanics. Allen’s creations succeed in becoming a source of energy.

Satori can be found in every moment of life, it is wrapped in all daily activities, its goal to unwrap them to see and hear satori. Be ready to submerge into a very profound view of the unified field. Be ready to journey into deeper levels of intelligence in nature and establish a dialog with your “self.”

Stephen Philips and mystified – Texture 2

[treetrunk036] (December 5, 2007)

Stephen Philips and mystified reworked a longform piece, adding various elements, creating the original “Texture One”, for Webbed Hand Records ( www.webbedhandrecords.com ). Several years later, Philips and mystified have created a new “Texture” piece, this one also based on an aquatic environment. “Texture 2″ is a simulated beach front, with waves of static replacing waves of water, and bass noise sculptures, drones and field recordings taking the place of other sounds.

Treetrunk Records is especially interested in the use of found sounds as source material– and we hope you will find the piece to be both relaxing and meditative.

OWFIELD + REMIX” – 2XCD

INFREQUENCY 31/05/2007

Disc one of this 2-CD set features documentation of DROUIN/OLSEN?s 4-channel installation SNOW:FIELD from 2003. The seven tracks were derived from the interaction with a field of snow in British Columbia measuring the same dimensions as the empty host gallery in the United Kingdom where the compositions were played back. Originally issued as a limited CD-R release in 2003, SNOWFIELD retains an unexpected quality that continues to reveal new details through it?s densely woven field recordings.

Disc two contains remixes of the original material by Drouin and Olsen, as well as by invited artists Tomas Jirku and Yann Novak, breathing new dimension and variation into the tracks. The intimate scratchings of the SNOWFIELD tracks open up into extended cinematic movements, with familiar textures reshaped into micro journeys through icy terrain.

Now available for pre-order. Shipping July 2.

Price $20 / includes International shipping.

REVIEWS

“The seven untitled tracks here have a remarkable cumulative impact, the contrast between their tiny, crystalline details and the vastness of the landscape becoming ever more telling. The CD comes with a second disc of remixes by Drouin, Olsen, and fellow North Western audio adventurers Tomas Jirku and Yann Novak; denser and more layered than the source material, they’re an excellent counterpoint which builds to a bracing climax with Drouin’s inexorably rising “The Walk Out.” THE WIRE

“A deep work of musical art…If this is the calibre of release we can expect from this label in the future, then I for one will be eagerly anticipating the next installment! Quite superb from beginning to end and a must for lovers of Raster Noton, NVO, Line and other such labels. Highly recommended.” SMALLFISH.UK

“This re-issue of a set of CDR field recordings now emerges as a tour de force for Canadian based Infrequency Recordings. Documenting and interacting with a field of snow in British Columbia, artists Jamie Drouin and Lance Olsen have taken their original installation piece, and offered it up for remixing by fellow collaborators, Yann Novak and Tomas Jirku, as well as re-mapping the contours of their source work.

This is a densely layered piece, not only a direct recording of snow activity, but also thematically and compositionally corresponding to all the manifestations of snow. The original installation piece sets out to record snowfall, interspersed with energetic sampling that gives life and energy to the field recordings, that are muted, gray renderings of dappled sound.

Essentially, this is minimalism with a capital ?M? pared down to minute shavings of granular texture, and literally brings the outdoors into a gallery environment, blurring the boundaries between the real and the simulated.”

WHITELINE

“Scratchy contact microphone crackles and lush drones make these discs a delight.”

THE STRANGER

TOMAS JIRKU

Tomas Jirku has quickly established himself on the international electronic music scene. From his humble beginnings of independently released MP3s ? first by No Type in 1999 ? and CDRs, his unpredictable explorations of techno have since been released on prestigious record labels around the world.

With already an impressive discography to his name, and an unrelenting desire to challenge himself, Jirku has created a new method of realizing his ideas and music though his new label Rivers of Recording

YANN NOVAK

Sound artist and Dragon’s Eye Recordings label owner Yann Novak documents the emotional impact of the world around him by recording it and then uses digital filtering to hone in on the feelings of time and place that field recordings can evoke. While maintaining the naturally occurring composition of the original document, Novak reveals the delicate nuances of sound within the new context of evocative soundscapes.

JAMIE DROUIN

The work of sound and multimedia artist Jamie Drouin explores the subtleties of experience, with a specific interest in the way audio can dramatically alter perceptions of both physical and temporal space. Incorporating photography, field recordings, guitar and synthesized sounds, Drouin?s works create intricately detailed patterns and textures which, while retaining references to corporeal sources, seek to expand and transform audience perceptions of familiar habitat.

Featured at international festivals of new music such as MUTEK (Montreal), Decibel (Seattle), and 2:13 (Greece) and in solo exhibitions in Japan, Germany, and Canada.

BIOTA: Half a True Day

Six years in the making, the visual/sonic art group Biota have finally completed their Sixth CD for ReR. Unique in their history and method, Biota painstakingly construct complex, organic structures that mix extensive studio processing and musique concrte techniques with a highly eclectic orchestra of acoustic and electronic resources – from kit drums, through mediaeval winds, strings and barrel organs to early experimental electronic instruments. Their works are always performance driven and interleaved with successive stages of lamination, imbrication, and radical pre- and post-processing, Quietly ploughing their own furrow for decades, Biota resemble no one, follow no one and, if the sonic arts were like the visual arts, would by now be a national treasure.

Omar Lavalle – dEstructuras

(ca085) (December 22, 2007)

“dEstructuras” is the last work from the peruvian soundartist Omar Lavalle. The sound of this album is full of rough textures and digital mistakes. Arrhythmic tracks with strange sonorous languages.

Omar Lavalle is a sound engineer and musician, he defines his sound as “musicafalsa”. In his work he uses audio samples, piezoelectric vibration transducer and mixes field recordings with sounds based on computer error; trying to create a balance between the sonic density and the human expression.

DAVID WATSON : Fingering An Idea

DAVID WATSON : Fingering An Idea

Disc 1

Dexter

Music for highland bagpipe

Highland Bagpipes: David Watson, Matthew Welch, Michael Mahoney, Brendan O’Rourke, Rob Brazius, Richard Baughman

Disc 2

Sinister

Music for acoustic and electric guitars

David Watson, acoustic & electric guitars

I first heard David Watson some 25 or more years ago at a small festival in Tasmania. Exotic location – and so was the music. I was astonished by a highly developed bowed guitar technique – up there with one of my favourite bowed guitar exponents, Davey Williams of Alabama. The Watson concert demonstrated a concentration and fascination with long tones and tuning. Fast forward on some years, and I heard the same guitarist playing in downtown New York, where he had decamped, playing in an improvised guitar style very much indicative of the place and its cultural environment. That’s not a negative assessment, just noticing a change of aesthetic values.

Then at the end of the 1990s, we met again in Berlin. David was there primarily to play in the Exiles Festival. And yes he had brought his guitar and yes also his bagpipes. Somehow the haptic feedback of these two instruments seemed so far removed from one another, I couldn’t imagine how they ended up in the same pair of hands; the physiological processes are so different for each instrument.

Then there is this recording. Although the forward velocity is purposefully restricted, there is plenty of tonal development – it’s just that it jumps straight over the equal tempered system and into other notions of tuning and scale – notably and happily unavoidably the harmonic series remains central to this organization of tones. Something akin to clanging church bells from hell – the overtones inherent in the basic chords being heavily accentuated. Odd things happen on Judgment Day, as you would expect from a player as opposed to a composer; unexpected clonks, squeaks, clicks, scrapes, adjustments are continually being addressed to the sonic states of each tuning regime.

Meanwhile back at bagpipe central, the bag is being squeezed mercilessly. Simple integer intervals of 5/4 and 6/5 (major and minor thirds) are being messed with as the listener is lead to Mecca but never quite allowed to enter the gates. The 3/2 interval and bastion of western music also wobbles under the wheezing strain. Disciples of Just Intonation should probably avoid this album. -Jon Rose (from the liner notes)

Fingering an Idea (a phrase pulled from a Chris Mann piece) resulted from a Phill Niblock invitation to make a double CD for bagpipe and guitar. A bagpipe CD is a particular challenge. A high beam spatial explorer, it is the kind of unstable phenomena that is hard to enjoyably reproduce on your stereo player. The first pipe recording session was an ensemble piece, the score including walks around the concert hall. The second, a solo multi-track session. The third with Rob Ramirez, recorded material was played back in the concert hall through an eight-channel MSP patch. A carnival of colliding pans, exits and entrances, re-recorded for stereo.

For “Sinister”, an old cassette recorded at Amica Bunker was the original germ. A sequence of re-tuning and de-stringing, starting with six strings pitched across a whole-tone and ending with an improvisation on one string. This old piece was dusted off and reworked through an image of bell-ringing, another outdoors vernacular. – David Watson

“Fingering an Idea” CD 1: ‘Dexter’ (Music for highland bagpipe). Gaitas escocesas: David Watson, Matthew Welch, Michael Mahoney, Brendan O’Rourke, Rob Brazius y Richard Baughman. “Fingering and Idea” CD 2: ‘Sinister’ (Music for acoustic and electric guitars) Guitarras: David Watson.

GoGooo – Long, Lointain

karu:9, CD (digipak)

10 audio tracks + 4 video tracks, (p) 2007

Far-away sounds, close to the heart…

Delicately-played instruments whose sounds, once sampled and digitally treated, seem to permeate our ears from a distant world both strange and strangely familiar. And yet, the resulting music is intimate as can be, full of untold and evocative imagery.

Delicately-played instruments whose sounds, once sampled and digitally treated, seem to permeate our ears from a distant world both strange and strangely familiar. And yet, the resulting music is intimate as can be, full of untold and evocative imagery.

GoGooo is Gabriel Hernandez, born in 1979 in Grenoble, France. Gabriel started making music because he wanted to accompany his guitar-playing cousin. Untrained, he turned to the computer, and thus came to life their duo Simagre. Other collaborations ensued with Alain Basso (Sol III) and Daisuke Miyatani (Miyagooo).

“Long, lointain” [Long, far] is GoGooo?s first professional full-length release, following a number of net releases, CDR EPs and compilation appearances. 2007 is a coming-out year for GoGooo, with additional releases on labels such as (1.8)sec Records (Canada), Magic Book (Japan), EKO (France) and his own netlabel Rain Music.

“Long, lointain” features 10 short pieces exerting a fleeting charm, populated with field recordings, found sounds and skeletons of melodies, all delicately arranged to titillate and soothe your ears. This music can be compared to electroacoustic folk for its instrumentation, but is actually unique in style.

Gabriel Hernandez is also a drawing artist, photographer and video artist, and most of these other facets of his art are represented in “Long, lointain”s packaging, including drawings decorating the digipack cover and four short videos.

Decembered – A Treatise On Eschatology

es38:

Sounds like ritual ambient, vocal…

This record is an attempt to blend several extremely different tracks into some sort of integrity; if we succeeded or not, is it something homogenic, or feels like rejects of Dr. Frankenstein tailoring factory, – it is up to listeners to decide.

There are some references to Gnosis and Hermetism in the album, however the primary source of inspiration is that anonymous poem, a friend sent to us last year. This person denies his authorship, nor do we claim any.

The resulting soundscapes are slightly different in their meaning from the poem’s contents, yet both are somewhat supplemental to each other…

As Alain De Botton suggests in his book ?The Art Of Travel?, the act of transit between social, cultural and geographic circumstance is far more than mere bodily movement. Language, architecture, food, gesture, landscape and sound all play a part in travel and ultimately contribute to the sensations of excitement, exoticism, disorientation and even fear that occupy the daily life of the traveller.

At points of departure and arrival on these journeys increasingly lies an airport. Like business hotels across the globe, the airport acts as a uniform presence ? rotating gates, the clunk of baggage, the vague chatter of tourist and traveller alike and the occasional interruption of muffled announcements. Vast halls echoing with the shifting of bodies intent on exodus and return.

As Socrates wrote, ?Man must rise above the Earth – to the top of the atmosphere and beyond – for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives [sic]?. Indeed, as the choreography of pre-flight checks is conducted following the gentle rock of the plane leaving the air bridge to a soundtrack of gentle pressurised drone and air conditioned hiss, a meditation commences. This moment of consideration is heightened, as the reflected sound of the engines scorching the tarmac surface is vacuumed into the void of open air and as the plane leaves the earth there is (in every traveller no matter how experienced) still a sense of silent awe at the marvels of the physics of flight.

Airport Symphony, commissioned by the Queensland Music Festival and Brisbane Airport Corporation, documents and synthesises the experiences of travel. Each piece represents a personal meditation on aspects of travel in the modern age and suggests ways in which we control, augment and ultimately exists in a time where almost no part of the face of the planet is inaccessible. Each of the pieces features a source recording made in and around Brisbane Airport between March and June 2007 ?in a raw form or transformed by processing.

Audio diary entries cataloguing the epic possibilities of flight, aero-passage and human bodies in motion and even at rest.

Olaf Hochherz – Pets EP

Olaf Hochherz – Pets EP

naivsuper 009 ** limited edition CDR

cover art: Olaf Hochherz

Pets EP is the first record by Olaf Hochherz. Four extraordinary and rich compositions and one spoken word piece.

The CDR will be released on April 6th 2006.

Sculpted with self-coded computer programs and lots of love for detail.

In 2004 Olaf was thrown out of his music university in Essen, Germany: The views of his teachers were just too different from Olafs ideas of electro acoustic music.

On the same day he met a member of the naivsuper collective, who decided that his music had to be published.

Well, it took 3 years to compile this short CDR but it was definetly worth waiting for + a full length CD is going to follow soon.

“PETS are just 5 pieces of a CD or the attempt to describe a sound-based form of life. Stuck inside a niche between nature and culture, acoustic inhabitants of “nature-culture-land”, hairy little things made out of dust who wander around without reason and suddenly drop dead completely unexpected. They have to be pushed but sometimes move by themselves, they can speak sometimes fast and sometimes rather slow and then again cuddle up in silence pretending not to be here.

They could also be sound creatures from the world of Microrobotics who speak to us without communicating, glitching transistor noises in between loudspeakers – no more – no less.

The sounds come to life with the help of selfwritten programs which technically analyse very basic material just like voices or eating noises. But not what the computer hears is interesting – it is the structure that he reads and filters out.

There is movement between the basic material and his representation by the computer – sounds in motion. A broken relation between the computer and the sound material develops.

It becomes vital that from this method of sound production, sounds and sequences originate which have their own rules.

Language appears as pure sound, free from grammar and content. Or in other words: PETS could be an answer to the question – Whats the sound of the things and objects in our surrounding once they emancipate themselves from their functionality?” (Olaf Hochherz)

Cheapmachines – The Descendant

[siji18]

The Descendant is based on a reworking of material created during Johann Wlight’s residency at Dunwich Beach in 2004. Philip Julian of Cheapmachines was given exclusive access to the dream diaries and study material of Wlight in order to build an estimation of the missing part of The Oneironautic Recrudescence. Though Wlight and Julian were engaged in sporadic postal correspondence before Wlight’s disappearance in 2004, the bulk of the original documents and manuscripts came from the Centre for Narcoacoustic Research in London.

Albrecht Maurer Trio Works : MOVIETALKS

Albrecht Maurer Trio Works : MOVIETALKS

for this trio came to me when I saw the film, “Lola rennt” (Run Lola Run) in the movie theatre, and its story seemed to me to be a wonderful structure for a music piece. What’s more, I noticed that there are many groups these days who improvise freely and there is a great number of concepts that combine composition and free improvisation in an abstract manner. Music pieces for musicians who improvise, however, are hard to find. Therefore, when I did get the opportunity, along with Theo Jrgensmann, to put together several projects for the Cultural Department of Bayer AG that were intended to present jazz as contemporary improvised chamber music, I was most enthusiastic. And I chose Walter Wierbos and Benot Delbecq, whose wonderful playing I admire, to be my musical partners.

‘Endless Coast’ CD 16

A collaboration between American underground psychedelic/noise pioneers (and still kicking hard now for over 30 years) Smegma and Norweigan noise/metal masters Jazkamer. From two totally different worlds and approaches to sound a totally original abstract language is born creating an imaginary coast that extends from the brutality of the Scandinavian frozen seas to the dark and mysterious rock filled beaches of the American northwest – a landscape full of strange creatures and beings, an eternal and endless coast. Recorded and mixed at Smegma?s legendary home base Portland studio.

EKYU #1

[insub22]

EKYU is a quartet who likes to integrate, deviate or transmute contempory musical languages. Through these distintly personal interpretations emerge multidimensional musical conversations.

The musicians who form part of this quartet are established improvisers and composers, who easily modify or redefine the borders between written and improvised music, simply seizing the musical instant.

Christophe Berthet : sax alto

Cyril Bondi : batterie, percussions

Christian Graf : guitare, loops

Raphal Ortis : basse

Enregistr et mix par Sam Albert, 16 aot 2007

1. In situ (Berthet)

2. Poursuite (Berthet)

3. 305 (Graf)
