Marco Clivati: Minimal Drumset

Alberto Prezzati: Concrete Improvisation

Marco Riva: Ghosts Guitars

“We started playing together at the beginning of 2005. At that time we were influenced by rock music but improvisation has always been our key to work together. The “project tape” was born because when we started playing we had a really poor equipment (karaoke cheap mic for the drum, little 4 track mixer, a tired PC, and a tape recorder). We used to jam for hours and then we selected the best material to put out, mainly on slsk. Now we have increased our equipment and enlarged our influences: the drummer switched on selected percussions, cymbals and home made instruments, Alberto is more focused on Electronic composition and improvisation, the guitarists uses 2 or more guitars sometimes played with various objects. Clivati’s influences goes from radical, non-idiomatic improvisation to the NY Avantgarde School as well as Ethnic percussion music and jazz; Alberto is a lover of musique concrete as well as all the others modern composers, the guitarist have no particular influences (he’s just too lazy to think about it…). So, now we still work as an improvising trio with electronics, percussions, and guitars. There’s also the CLAN DUO with percussions and live electronics. We do compose our music useing new and old tecniques. We are developing a lot of different ways to play music, to compose music and to hear it. This year we’re goin to release some albums. One is going to come out for CS recordings and maybe another one for a cd-r label. We’re also looking for gigs and installations. Some future projects are a Taol (table) full of homemade instruments (acoustics and electronics) that will allow us to create our own sounds and to use it for live shows”

Dizzonanz Domestic : Karma Burn

 Dizzonanz Domestic : Karma Burn

Dizzonanz Domestic : Karma Burn

(ca053) (September 28, 2007)

Karma Burn is an album very much inspired by Drone acts such as Sunn O)))

and is also a series of experiments in the distortion of real instruments

such as the trombone heard in the first track. I have also put forth some

effort in minimalizing the layering of some tracks, such as Elizabeth’s

Balloon, which is entirely made from a single sound recording of the squeeks

and groans that occur when you squeeze a balloon. It is the first album of

mine to feature vocals and the meanings of the few songs that have them

include commentary on the music industry (Radio Junkie), disgust at drug

abuse (From M^o^untains to M-o-le Hills), and tributes to the the artists

before me who helped inspire me to make the music I make (I Have Seen the

Sunnrise: A Tribute).

Lyrics:

02 Radio Junkie

Millions in the millisecond

Electro signal (thorazine)

All doped up on (dopamine)

The o so glorious mind-slave

Science in a water-main

Logic washed (and ocean marred)

Zombie riffs (on dead guitars)

The date-drugged radio-junkie

Maybe Theyre Vexed by My Tired Vortex

Stood for something (now its dying)

No more tears (were not trying)

Slaves bound by mass opinion

Maybe Theyre Vexed by My Tired Vortex

03 I Have Seen the Sunnrise

All is as to be expected

I have seen the sunnrise

I have seen the earth in the midst of violent thunder

The Heavens open forth upon me

And I now pay tribute to my betters

Drone on

Drone on

04 From M^o^untains to M-o-le Hills

Merry mountains on crumbling roots

Drink from the poison wells of the earth

and protest the accusations of the land about them

It is our right. It is our day.

Our day to shine out against the sky

and seek the glories of our peers through veins of molten rock

and we shall be as Gods

Enlightened to the woes of men

and pound the lands with furious vengeance

in glorious acts of ignorance

The Cherry Blues Project – El Viaje Revisited Vol. 1

The Cherry Blues Project – El Viaje Revisited Vol. 1

The Cherry Blues Project – El Viaje Revisited Vol. 1

rb006

The sources of this album are from the album “El Viaje Mistico” (The Mystical Journey), originally released in 2001. The sounds of “El Viaje” are, essentially, fields recordings from a journey by train in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

For “El Viaje Revisited” we selected fragments and sections from those recordings and we remixed them to obtain new tracks.

We think that “El Viaje Revisited” is a soundscape. We are very satisfied with the results, because we believe that the originals recordings have been improved in this album.

El Viaje Revisited is formed by Two Volumes, each lasting 79 minutes.

Tracklist:

1. Meditaciones, Pt. 2

2. Station, Pt. 1

3. Journey, Pt. 1

maguett – garden in my cellar

(ca051) (September 27, 2007)

The project maguett is created what to unite and order the material created by me, from 2002 – 2007.

In a translation from French Maguett means a breadboard model. This word is very familiar to me also I often it using as I am engaged in design interior spaces. The nature and technics of extraction of a sound is interesting to me. Therefore usually in the beginning there is a sound and not described feeling which adjusts on a certain wave and creates a number of emotions and

assumptions. The result is always unpredictable, and it is very healthy. Even the finished compositions in we wash consciousness remain breadboard models of caught vibrations which by means of technical possibilities and consciousness participation turn to a collage from sound effects and samples. In process or after creation of a sound composition there is a number of images which in turn forms a direction vector. Practically all compositions are written down in real time with the minimum programming and planning.

mons jacetmons jacet – a.p. improvizations

mons jacetmons jacet – a.p. improvizations

(ca050) (September 24, 2007)

the album is a compilation of music i call “layered improvizations”. mainly it’s a way of playing in a band, when you have none. just improvising one layer of sound and then, while listening to it, playing the other one on top. so, structurally it’s very simple and basic, while recording takes lots of time untill i get to play accordingly/in tact with the other “player”. so, in fact, the result is just a chosen piece (with some after recording mastering) from the long pieces of improvised sound tracks. and, as i am not too good a player, it has a feeling of freshness and rawness. because of that first track is ‘morning birds’ – symbol of brand new start and freedom.

well, i’ve been making noise since quite early in my teens. as to that it’s been not just sounds – writing and painting as well. so, in a way, music is also inspired by experiences of other activities, mainly painting – which gave me an idea of ‘layering’ in a sense as i now undestand it. i never played in any festivals, just local underground parties, and at my home – lullabies for friens who drop bye.

07. La Canzone dell’Estate (Il Borro)

To spend “a summer without rain” is, shortly, to take away the gloss of general ‘nature’ music and allow one to follow riddles, breaking down incidents of lost time. A story of pilgrimage, in one of past years’ hottest summers (2003); it captures an ephemeral moment of insight and, possibly, of thanksgiving – not for some thing, but for being witness to something. What you bring to the story is what makes it resonate: Hue has already brought the soundtrack and the structure, but ultimately the narrative is each one’s personal thing. May he agree or not, I’m passing le baton now to my (skeptical) Dutch friend, who’s written a glowing review for Earlabs…

Who could imagine that the hottest summer of your life would commence with rain? Who could imagine this long hot summer to continue so refreshingly – with the clatter of water, the clatter of guitar strings? In fact, there is a constant coolness in atmosphere to the whole of Hue’s first solo disc, its ambiance evoking shadows rather than light. Whispering ghosts, alike remembrances of fleeting encounters, of fleeting sights, and especially of fleeting sounds inhabit the keenly sought out shades of churches, village-houses, trees… and probably hotel-rooms as well. These shades themselves become ghostly, ectoplasmatic entities morphing into… – wordless – song (somewhat alike the characters of a Thomas Pynchon novel). Although, within their specific context on the cd, there is a hint of the duck-rabbit problem: with the perspective flitting between background and foreground, between atmosphere and event, the exact specification of which of these poles defines the actual ‘music’ music at best remains ambiguous. This goes to show that for Hue, a making of a field-recording is itself alike any other form of music. And as such, what he hears too becomes a form of self-disclosure, creating an intimacy as were we a co-traveler on this Odyssey of shades, the move from the one shade to the next as so many stations of shared longing going up to the paradisaical fata morgana, that utopia of ‘home’ (complementing the stations of the cross which must have been followed so many times considering the importance of the shadowy nature of churches as a source of shelter from the heat). Unable to hold out in the heat of the light, we keep to the confines of shadows – but, as also Hue meets many friends along the way, we at least can sense here that we are not alone. In the end, this cd is a testimony to the invaluable worth of friendship. Home, as they say, is where the heart is. -M. Pauwen

Runtime: 49’26”

We continue our travel through the wonders of electro-acoustics with another american, but this time it’s a south-american. Please welcome Juan Jos from the capital of the Tango, Buenos Aires.

‘Plano Vertical’, consisting of only two long pieces – ‘Extensin Activa’ and ‘Plano Vertical 2′ – is a fifty minute journey along a misterious dark corridor, with highly textured sound halls along the way, which appear and disappear under various element-like palettes, like earth, water, fire, wind and others. There are also some sections where we can hear some kind of machinery working around us, feeling like some kind of an obscure sci-fi soundtrack. We can also hear layers of electricity, human steps and voices, boxes and stones falling around, thermal generators, steam engines and a plethora of real-world (maybe out-of-this-world too) noises.

‘Plano Vertical’ is an amazing electro-acoustics album, worked to prefection and offering us a intense ride all the way to the end. Sounds even better with good circumaural headphones. Not to be missed. – Pedro Leito

K.M. Krebs – The Jade Furnace II

treetrunk030 (September 22, 2007)

This is the second in The Jade Furnace series of albums. Like the first, the name is derived from a Taoist alchemical metaphor that denotes the space in which the great work of alchemical transformation takes place. I have always felt a very strong resonance between the process of creating music and the symbolism and metaphors of alchemy. This album continues my own exploration of the similarities and possibilities between the two.

This series of works is peculiar in that they are intended to occupy a space between ambient albums and sample CDs. I want to encourage you to experiment with it in ways you may not consider with most musical recordings you encounter. Play it on random, play several copies on random simultaneously. Play it slowly, backwards, through effects, or any combination of those. Also, I strongly encourage other musicians to sample, de-construct, and re-use these recordings in their own music. I only ask you credit me and would, of course, be interested in hearing the results of your work.

[one031]

Machinefabriek’s Stuip and Staar are two minimal drone performances captured at the Cross Street Chapel, Manchester (UK) and the Toneelschuurm, Haarlem (NL). Running just under an hour his processed guitar textures rise and fall, stretching their substance through etheral minimalism, slowly evolving epic heights, and moments of sublime symphony.

Rutger Zuyderveit’s work has gained much attention over the past few years through performance, his self-titled imprint, and releases at labels such as Type and Lampse. We’re pleased to have him join our ranks and carry forward the ambient series of One releases previously visited by past alumns such as Loscil, Makunouchi Bento, Kaneel, and Kwook.

Are you ready to be embraced by the Tropical Rainforest? Thanks to the recordings of Brazilian physician mathematic and composer Thelmo Cristovam, we can sonically witness one of the most sensational environments of our planet in the surroundings of Lake Mamori (Manaus, Brazil).

Paying attention to the beauty of the micro and macro sounds of this jungle can be impossible when you are being surrounded by moistly warm air and the “Anopheles Gambiae”, a mosquito that is the principal vector of malaria (afflicting more than 500 million people and causes more than 1 million deaths each year).

These field recordings are an aural privilege that not all humans deserve. If you are a nature lover, the layers of heat will be replaced by soothing layers of refreshing eco-sound, and the mosquito bites will become pleasing static sensations. Enjoy a full day of pure connection with a pure environment.

Nikita Golyshev — “15 Songs from Glass, Oil and Other Sources”

[exc010]

These records are the result of research made by Nikita Golyshev (CD-R) in a period between March and August of a year 2007. The main objective of this experiment was to detect some acoustic properties of oil as substance, placed in different capacities such as crystal glasses and medical bulbs.

The obtained 15 sound fragments are collected by the frequency and spectrum analysis of oil behaviour, its molecular changes in various environments (aggressive and non-agressive) and wide range of oil interactions with metal.

Skyapnea : Vibrating Portraits

Nexsound ns58

Can we use sounds to portrait someone? Can we paint using vibrating air to obtain a sound that represents something? What if sound could be used to design features belonging to other sensory spheres? Choosing a particular frequency could help to evocate a thin nose? A granular light? The fragrance of morning after a sunrise full of small rain? The taste of a coffee?

All these questions were contained in a reflection about abstract music sent to nine sound artists and they were asked to start from those question marks to reflect about the possible uses of sound as a representative media. The result are some very different sound portraits, from the biggest eruption of history captured in the drones of italian composer Elio Martusciello(ReR Megacorp) to the processed field recordings of the Mimerlaven mine in Norberg by the Nottingham based Flotel(Expanding), from the free jazz tones of the audio picture of his father in law by Autistici(12k,Kikapu) to the micro rhythms constructed on sounds captured from a Lomo camera by Maps and Diagrams(PAUSE_2,Smallfish,Cactus Island). The other artists who answered this unusual call are Lawrence English (Room40,Quatermass,Baskaru,Cronica), Salvatore Borrelli aka (etre)(Baskaru), He Can Jog(audiobulb, hippocamp), Gregg Kowalsky aka Ossobuco (Kranky, Nosordo) and Motion (12k,Fat Cat) who all gently took part in this challenge.

Runtime: 30’28”

Two years ago, on August 29/30, hurricane Katrina hit hard on the greater New Orleans area, causing death and destruction as she passed and dissipated a few days after. Considered by weather analysts as the 3rd greatest hurricane in American history, Katrina was also considered by many as the probable result of men’s relentless and irrational harm on our planet. Not that hurricanes never happened before, but they are growing stronger and more destructive in recent years, as temperatures rise and ice melts in the northern hemisphere. This is not new.

A sad story like this one could be told by ‘Climate’, an electroacoustic work authored by New York resident and sound designer Billy Gomberg. On ‘Climate’, Billy manipulates feedback sinewaves and folds them around sparse notes generated by his electronic apparatus. Sometimes they are dark, obscure and sad non-musical pieces, and sometimes they sound ethereal, musical, almost lyrical pieces on the verge of emotional collapse, like the ‘lower ninth ward’ was, as portrayed on the cover artwork, after the passing of Katrina. ‘Climate’ is all this and more for you to delve in and discover. Billy has released before on Standard Klik Music, 12/term. and other places. He will return shortly after this release with a collaborative work entitled ‘Country at the River of Friendship’ with Anne Guthrie. Keep your ears peeled. – Pedro Leito

PING PONG PARROT – Scattershot Bill’s 7 Day Safari

(UR_027)

John Cage once listened to Glenn Branca and said it reminded him ominously of fascism. Well, he would’ve thought better of Ping Pong Parrot’s – Scattershot Bill’s 7 Day Safari. Less a blitzkrieg of sonic (youth spawning) bombast and more a beautifully recombinant foray into late 20th century composition, electronica (make that post – electronica), post – post rock and dadaistic takes on jazz. Quack Physics = heralds a jungle cruise with off beatish beats and bleeps giving way to badass brass gone chromatic against a pedal tone. If Hemingway or Teddy Roosevelt wore headphones in a William Gibson novel, they’d listen to Quack Physics.

Typewriter Resonance takes us into shotgun shell strewn territory. A great comedian once said: you can’t have everything, where would you put it? Well I think everything is in Typewriter Resonance, including an electric guitar feedback motif that Miles Davis, Thurston Moore and Stockhausen would love. Neil’s Hyperspace Birdcage pauses on the percussive to momentarily asses the skeletal remains of the day by way of voltage control oscillators after a Tibetan sabbatical. Interrogation Report, Blotched is art called in for questioning by the sensibility police with the sum and difference of madness and beauty speaking in drunken tongues.

In The Day Ignatz Met Cthulhu , I imagine a wooden pinball machine hooked up to a plastic grand piano activated by a gene spliced cross breed clone of John Cage and Jackson Pollock. The Year of the Toy Harp is something else. Listening to it has the effect on me of being de-programmed out of every music theory lesson I’ve ever had and thrown into a wind. It is that same wind that plays the detuned strings of the toy harp as it orbits a wordless and visceral sun.

I’m just lucky to be a meteoric ear in that galaxy. And on the seventh day Scattershot Bill’s slugs still ricochet, albeit inside the angular piano chorale called Lightning Storms Make Psychic Debris Come to Life . A sometimes self-pulverizing banzai glacier or a black-blood bleeding baby doll out of a Brothers Quay film that suspends the 5 senses while animating a 6th. These 7 tracks are poetry by other means. Come download the safari for yourself and see. (Review by Max Go)

released: April 15th, 2006

Acoustic free improvisation is performed by this duo consisting of Eric Pailh on tenor saxophone and Johann Bourquenez on piano. The performance was recorded in Pau, France on January 29th, 2006. The overall sound is somewheres between jazz and post-classical but never quite settling in either camp. Track one is rather mournful but the tempo picks up in track three which is notable for some very impressive soloing by Bourquenez. Pailhe has a powerful and emotional sound that can be found at his best on track five. This is a fine example of contemporary free improvisation.

After a few gigs, Eric Pailh and Johann Bourquenez recorded in January 2004 their first Tln 5 album, “The Fissback Voyage”, and created a new personnal soundscape between free music and electronic music. Instead of producing it on a CD, they prefered to release it for free on internet. In August 2004, eDogm netlabel is online and propose to download “The Fissback Voyage” for free. Then, since August 2005, Tln 5 began to look for saxophone and piano gigs, free forms and totally improvised concerts with no set list, no electronic stuff, to express the intensity of the moment that’s happening. This new release on eDogm is a live recording of a concert in Pau, France, organised by the local label Relax-ay-voo in January 2006. One hour of tenor saxophone and piano free improvisation in a former cold-storage unit, exept on track 5 where Johann plays with the old metallic fridge which was still here.
