Saluki Regicide – See Things

[wh083]

This is the first long-form recording by Saluki Regicide outside of the Rain project. Using as a foundation a long-form composition by Akashic Crow’s Nest, Saluki Regicide adds layers of characteristic embellishments: obscure samples, bizarre rhythmic loops, peculiar washes of sound, snippets of string melody, all adding up to an interesting meeting of styles.

Saluki Regicide is a recording project of C.P. McDill. Webbed Hand Records’ inaugural release was the Saluki Regicide album “Dematerialized” which along with five other releases are concentrated in the first dozen listings in our catalog. After a long dormancy, Saluki Regicide returns with “See Things,” and the coming seasons look favorable for more creative output by this popular artist.

Pierre Henry Musique Corticalart

In the twilight days of the 1970s henry built a brainwave-conduction system which he placed on the head(s) of various individuals, feeding the resultant voltages into a giant synthesizer… the concept being that the “composer” of the music (in the case of this recording: roger lafosse) was the one to whom the transducers were affixed. hearing the music (inarguably henry’s fiercest and most unrelenting bit of pure analog scree) it’s understandable that this process never sparked an auto-electroacoustic-composition movement. Originally issued in a beautiful silver/black foil-stamped sleeve (repreoduced wonderfully here) as part of the illustrious prospective 21?siecle series on philips. mind-slaying and so incredibly aggressive for a record from 1970. The Sweet Sweet sounds of pure oscillators.

players: Albrecht Maurer (gothic fiddle), Norbert Rodenkirchen (medieval flutes, harp)

A different approach to improvisation featuring early instruments and played by two accomplished interpreters, who bring together their knowledge of contemporary, ethnic and early music as well as improvisation. The result relies on a thorough instrumental proficiency, blending musical motives and practices from a rich background, and pays attention to the subtleties of performance. The nature of their backgrounds possibly explains the strong preference for idiomatic materials, which resort to melodic (atonal or diatonic), rhythmic, or timbric elements enabling a common ground. However, silence, abstraction and noise seem to take a secondary role in their music, the extended technical choices remaining within the realm of the known, narratively formal, etc. Some of the passages have a depth and quality frequently wanting in other experimental works, and yet their interaction ocassionally comes across as slightly naif in freer improvised passages, somehow forgetting the subtle fineness of their still, lyrical passages.

POTLATCH The Rrose Slavy Show

POTLATCH The Rrose Slavy Show

POTLATCH The Rrose Slavy Show

[insub19]

The name of this group is a program in itself. Its mere mention transcends the performative aspect of a ritual through music – several other dimensions of human life are implied, be it spiritual or material (traditionally as in present days, the distribution of food and wealth). The original purpose of the Potlatch ceremonies among the indigenous peoples in both Americas is regulative – its festive nature may seem spontaneous, but the finality is to give some kind of order to the social functions inside a community and to rule the relationships between tribes, namely establishing a conduct for the trade of products. This non-linear and not very evident connection between “government” proceedings and entertainment fascinated many intellectuals of the First World, like Claude Lvy-Strauss and Georges Bataille, and has been an inspiration for the avant-garde arts since the Fifties and the first adoptions of its principles by the Lettrists. It comes from the times when societies had no State services and when communal parties with dances, games and banquets were the only occasions to normalize collective existence. This – the return to a society without the State – is an old aspiration for the Anarchists of every tendency since the 19th century. It is with no wonder that we find a Libertarian music like Free Jazz declaring an interest for that scenario.

Potlatch, the band, was formed by percussionist and object manipulator Monsieur Trinit, a Dada and Situationist motivated sound artist. His contributions to Portuguese improvisation go far – he played in Carlos Zngaro’s group Plexus during the Seventies and worked for many years with trumpeter Sei Miguel, besides being one of the regular members of Ernesto Rodrigues’ Variable Geometry Orchestra. All the other improvisers in this live recording – except for guest singer Olympia Boule and drummer Lus Desirat – make usual appearances in VGO concerts.

Soprano saxophonist and flutist Jorge Lampreia was also with Plexus in the Eighties, and Desirat had in those years a duo with one of today’s main sax players in the free bop scene, Rodrigo Amado. The intent of the nonet in this appearance (guest Abdul Moimme replacing trombonist Marcello Maggi on tenor and alto saxophones) has something to do with the likes of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and the Sun Ra Arkestra, namely in the ritualistic approach and the sound ambience. It is an organic, dense and boiling music, full of details but with drive and syncopation. Music to party to, to open consciousness and to liberate expression from fixed structures.

Rrose Slavy (a pun to “Eros, c’est la vie”), a transvestite alter-ego of artist Marcel Duchamp, as pictured by photographer Man Ray in 1921, is the motive of this recording.

Art as eros, that’s the message,

and this is really erotic music.

danny kreutzfeldt / jason corder : Shelter’s End – excerpt from extract

[cnv41]

Shelter?(TM)s End is the moniker for a new collaboration of Danny Kreutzfeldt & Jason Corder. Danny Kreutzfeldt has already released numerous releases under his own name as well as under a plethora of aliases. Jason Corder as well has released under his own name, in addition to releasing under two further aliases. Comparing the oeuvre of the respective artists, the conclusion here seems to be that Danny Kreutzfeldt is in charge of the foundational work (in this case: sonically recreating the fathomless vacuity of inner molecular space), with Jason Corder filling it with fluffs, globs, sparkles and washes of grit, glitch, sounds of electrical tools and some more viscous substances, which take on the shape of its container, as a lake of its bedding. Massive reverberations of empty monolithic space (the reverberations of a gutted, godless heaven) are interspersed by these more material sonic instances, breaking the waves of desolation and forming eddies of flux which somehow breathe life into self-willed death. Even unto the point that a form of birdsong again resounds in what seemed an airless mausoleum (or a nuclear shelter?). Perhaps this song is just an echo of what is already long gone? This birdsong so becomes the herald of the end of our refuge. Now, with these memories revived, we shall remain ever unsheltered to life?(TM)s demise. In the end, in our hiding, this memory of the fact that natures music has ever resounded at all (apart from perhaps the faculty of memory itself) might well be the biggest tragedy of all to have befallen us.

Erik Griswold : Wallpaper Music

players: Erik Griswold (preared piano)

Courting the ameublement music concept, the piano is prepared both as a forerunner to ambient sound or as a mechanized player automaton and yet, hides sophisticated accretions of sounds stemming from a personal approach to prepared piano. The materials unfold according to a myriad microscopic, independent rhythms superimposed as transparet layers of sheet music. The coexistence of prepared and non-prepared sounds, and the subtle nuances evoked by the various timbres contributes to create a complex cluster of constantly shifting caleidoscopic percussive sounds, endlessly turning and still at the same time. Other tracks present cascades of percussive sounds alternating with silences.

Quest.Room.Project – Room Number: Fiducial Banality

tube 078

A gentle flute motive introduces us to the world of Quest.Room.Project from Russia, and one might at first expect a relaxed listening experience. But by the time more voices chime in, it becomes obvious that these spotlights are going to be swallowed by shadows of tragic compassion. “Room Number: Fiducial Banality” is organised in 4 parts (one could as well define them as movements, because there are some key themes occuring throughout the entire release) and each of them features a room with distinct acoustic characteristics:

“The reason for surfacing” appears like a shadow of a doubt that gradually turns into overwhelming certainty. Almost inaudible at the beginning, “Assemblage” soon escalates to several emotional outbursts, before exhaustion will take its tribute in “Possesion” and create a haunted, threatening atmosphere. As reminiscence of the beginning, “Combined Exercises” begins with a flute solo and continues to pick up previous motives to escalate them to a wall of sound. Finally the dissonances wither away and make room for the last remnants of the ever occuring flute theme. A cycle has been completed and we are at the beginning again…

Bogdan Dullsky, the creative head behind the Quest.Room.Project, describes his intentions on the project’s website as “a search of space for the life leaving for borders of habitual linearity”. But “Room Number: Fiducial Banality” doesn’t attempt to descibe a solution to break free: It’s left up to the listeners themselves to recognise their personal ever returning patterns of life and change them by their own strategy. or – as Bogdan concludes – as an “attempt to live by some own rules on which borders it is possible to breathe freely”. – Olliver Wichmann

ALEXEI BORISOV – Live In Kaliningrad

[tng3009]

Alexei Borisov is one of the most prominent and acclaimed Russian audio artists. He started his career in the begining of the 1980s as a guitarist for a new wave band Center, then he created Night Prospekt – an avant-garde, electronic oriented underground audio collective which won a huge critical acclaim in Russia.

Known also as a DJ in Moscow’s clubs and radios, he continues his impressive career as an experimental / noise musician and a member of projects as known as Volga or F.R.U.I.T.S.

The basic elements of the current recording are soundfragments from my solo CD “Polished Surface Of A Table”, released by Electroshock in 2004.

The fragments have been processed by laptop and some analog devices and completed by voices, foundsounds and manipulations with cassette player, mp3 player and minidictophone.

The live was supportetd by a video “Diploma award ceremony”, filmed by myself at my doughter’s school in Moscow four years ago and processed later by Anton Nikkila and myself in Helsinki.

Special thanks: Sergei Letov, Danil Akimov, Anton Nikkila, Lukasz Szalankiewicz, Artemy Artemiev, Slava Sky.

Szkieve – Live at Plano B, 21 july 2006

Antena 023

In July 2006, the collective Antena gave reception to Dimitri della Faille aka Skieve, in his second Latin-american tour, playing on Brazil for the first time. Szkieve has already recorded a half dozen of CDs and vinyl records and played Europe, Asia and South and North America. Born in 1973 in Belgium, now he lives in Mexico City, where manages the label Disques Hushush, that released more than 20 CDs and vinyl records of artistas of all over the world.

Szkieves music is made of intense and complex work, embodied very rich textures and expansive sounds, combined with chords, string melodies and sharp synthetic pitch. Szkieves sound research could be described as “scientific”, comparable to modern electronic composers, but instead of “dry” academic experiments, Szkieve works with a high emotional component, achieve very uncommon results in the genre.

This is the recording of his presentation in Rio de Janeiro, in Plano B, on 21st July 2006.

Rain is a series of conceptual CDs produced under the auspices of Webbed Hand Records. Each Rain is a CD-length ambient recording ideal for listening to while relaxing, working, or socializing. Typically the recordings in this series are minimalistic soundscapes, with motifs played out cyclically and repetitively, rather than progressively, in order to induce a relaxed state.

Mystified’s Rain 2 is a shimmering hailstorm of mysterious percussive sounds resonating across a wide space. This is foremost an album of auditory texture which seeks to induce in the listener a reverie of vague mental associations and feelings.

A paradoxical encounter between experimental improvisation and structured frameworks. Organized in several stages, the materials were developed through extended experimentation and a subsequent organization of the materials according to a modular system, the various sounds being distributed according to various criteria, so as to enable a more abstract result. The clear experimental conception of the materials together with the complex process of edition recalls earlier contemporary pieces emerged from an abstract chamber environment, the thinly edited materials having their original gesture blurred in the process. And yet, in spite of the sophistication of the structure, the materials belong to the realm of low-fi, homemade, noise experimentation, although the aesthetic is far removed from the one usually associated wit it.

Tribe of Astronauts – Manatee

Tribe of Astronauts – Manatee

Tribe of Astronauts – Manatee

[wh038]

Manatee is a 45-minute ambient soundscape which give the feeling of sleeping outdoors under the stars, on a balmy southern Summer night. Electronic and instrumental sounds are blended with field recordings in a relaxing continuum with no dissonance, shocks or surprises. The whole effect is warm and agreeably trance-inducing. This piece has a brain-massaging bass pulse and a nice panoramic sound arrangement.

A very nice calm sounscape. The atmosphere of this track is very reminiscent of the Orb’s “Spanish Castles In Space”, soothing and luminous.

Aural Initiative [released 2007]

Work #2 in the Sonic Narcotics series

42min of aural hallucinations, presented here in 6 parts…

i arrived at the gathering

already worse for wear

a gut full of jack

a pocket full of Manerix

and a mind

teetering

i knew the evening was gonna’ be awkward

cos’ the funk of beautiful people

overpowered the cigarette smoke

i slipped a Manerix between my lips

swallowed it down

to soften the beast

then slid into the nearest

Delving into sonic narcosis and other nonsense The Aural Initiative provides material that may satiate the thirst of the sonic fetishist and/or provide the exploratory mind with sounding/vision/text things that have been designed to emulate and stimulate the hallucinatory (or not).
