Seen from an anthropological perspective, this double CD clearly recovers ?lost tapes? from an overtly African, collectively woven sound cloth. Le spalmidon est le premier univers sonore compos de gnrateurs lectro acoustiques capable de reproduction et d’volution. Ces gnrateurs consituent les lments d’une population. Ils ont la capacit de se dplacer au sein d’un espace temporel, de se transformer et de s’associer avec d’autres gnrateurs afin de se reproduire et enfin de mourir.

Au cours de leur existence, certains seront affects par de graves mutations ( distorsions, retard ) changeant leur spectre sonore mais enrichissant par de nouvelles couleurs le spalmidon tout entier. D’autres deviennent parasites en dtournant les fonctions sonores de leurs congnres leur profit.

L’ensemble de ces mcanismes permettent la constitution d’une nouvelle forme de vie artificielle : le spalmidon.

By the end of 2005 free electronic music on the Internet has reached a peak point of abstraction and metaphor, presenting a remarkable range of open sound archives led by Artist-identities barely visible, gigabytes of fragmentary ideas and sketches, spliced, compiled and assembled into works of strange beauty. the territory of creative potential is nearly impossible to mark, neither to define and picture considering the number of artists and concepts. The first compilation by frozenelephantsmusic.com therefore aims to simply start an ongoing presentation of compositions from this wide field, presenting individual artist personalities and their work, considering the artistic process and its manifestation.

For “The Map is not the Territory” F.E.M. gathered 11 pieces by artists from the UK, France, Sweden, Ireland, Germany, USA and Japan. The collection includes minimal, computer-based aesthetics, sensitive undulations of sound, natural reverberations, organic structures and fragile sonic architecture.

To hear is not to listen.

Miwa Momo Hojo & Yuichi Nagao “Kiechima” fe005

Meet the voice & performance artist Miwa Momo Hojo and her colleague, the media & sound artist Yuichi Nagao from Tokyo, Japan. The combination of their works is a tidal wave of dense, digital recordings, loaded with compact melodic structures, shifting voice patterns & fuzzy electronic noise. Some of these songs are meandering from improvised acoustic basics to richly layered compositions, some have an almost romantic quality, taking the listener from from gasping emptiness to scratchy indeterminacy. The music by Miwa Momo Hojo & Yuichi Nagao is a breathtaking update to the idea of digital songwriting.

Miwa Momo Hojo, born in 1982 studied Imagine Arts & Sciences at Musashino Art University, Japan. Her solo-works are mainly influenced by traditional japanese music and it’s instruments. Yuichi Nagao studied media/soundart with Christophe Charles at Tokyo Arts University and musicology with the jazz musician Naruyoshi Kikuchi. His solo-works are defined by the search for new musical structures.

My idea of sound is simply the sound speaks for itself. Sounds have a certain form of life and they are able to carry certain ideas of their own which are communicable to a listener or an audience.

It is also not about the digital and analog distinction. Digital and analog equipment are very much like siblings. They both complement and challenge each other to explore new sounds and to create new possibilities.

Most of my works are situated above the level of “convenient” or accessible listening. However, they are not extreme in the sense of the brutal and the bizarre. They aim at moving the listener out of his/her comfort zone. To me, comfort is nothing more than a regulative condition that has become more restrictive than liberating to our everyday lives.

“Naufrageur” means “wrecker” in French. A set of 4 improvisations recorded on the 5th of June 2006. Discrete metamorphoses. Repetive structures are slowly transformed. Sometimes unleashed, sometimes quiet, almost empty and silent.

Dague De Misericorde is Aurore Dudevant (clarinet) + Philippe Zulaica (violin).

About themselves:

We are also known as Drone and Forces Mobiles.

We improvise without any predefined rule or structure.

We try to create minimal / basic / repetitive compositions.

So constrating mistakes and accidents become events.

Silence is one of our instrument.

We play together once a week since 2005.

During one hour we improvise a strange and crashing conversation between us.

Miguel Onofri lives in this Argentinian town called Mendoza,

population 876 000, not very far from Chile’s border and about 1000m

above the sea level, up in the mountain plateau. Pretty far away from

everything we know, it seems. Nonetheless, Miguel is an active part

of an artistic community of visual artists and musicians – Miguel is

also a video artist -, they put up shows and invite guest artists,

touring around some towns like Crdoba, and they even started their

own Netlabel, SincroWeb.

As a sound artist, Miguel is known as Mezzo, putting his laptop do

work on low frequency signals and white noise and drone-based minimal

electronica. Harsh stuff, and amazingly well done.

‘Ostracismo’, although being a very small release, inflicts variable

levels of damage to our ears. And it’s good.

‘Track #01′ is a small intro of low frequency clicks and cuts, Ryoji

Ikeda style, and is somewhat violent. It takes 59 seconds to go away,

‘though. ‘Track #02′, the longest track in this EP, starts with

machine errors, like an electrical generator going berserk, sending

SOS signals. Slowly, an underlying drone appears and takes control of

the track. The rest is up to you to discover.

‘Track #03′, another short piece, an interlude-type of thing, is of a

dissonant type of sound frequencies, a different kind of error,

easier on the ears but also very interesting to explore. ‘Track #04′

is a personal favorite. It’s an emotional drone, unfortunately too

small to enjoy to its fullness. ‘Track #05′ is made of another type

of interferences. You could almost visualize the wavefields of data

being put out. Again, too damn short to put us in a transe. Awesome

release. Now, can I have another 40 minutes of this, please? – Pedro

Finally starts the new series Flos Acquae (a sub-series of Benekkea net/rec label) regarding the exeperimental music… not the same soup about electronics false experimentalism but a really strange and limited series regarding the new sounds.

In fact Merde is a crazy strange exeperimental french band from a shit on the bottom of the sea who change the standard music concept in an improvisation, noise, toys, electro, free jazz navy which sails into the border ocean waves. Chaotic structured sounds of drums, mad vocals, hypnotic bass grooves, sad crazy trumpet… take us to trance dance remembering some Mike Patton, J. Zorn and Ecm works.

Probably the best experimental net album of the year.
