ASTRA steloj

Collaboration between Ilios and Jason Kahn dates back to the 2002 Elektrograph festival, where they first performed together. Since then they’ve toured Switzerland in 2004 for the Domizil vs. Antifrost CD project and performed at the 2005 Ertz Festival in Spain.
“Astra” translates to “stars” in Greek; as does “Steloj,” the title of their first CD, in Esperanto.

ILIOS has released numerous solo works in different formats and performed extensively in Europe, Japan and the Americas. Collaborations with various artists and production works for dance, theatre and films.

Jason Kahn has released solo and collaborative recordings on many labels, including Cut, Sirr, For4Ears, Brombron, Rossbin, Antifrost, Domizil, ATAK, Table of the Elements, Creative Source and Crouton.
He has also exhibited numerous sound installations in North and South America and Europe.

Bajo la estridente superficie, el CD ilustra una zona importante del mapa de la msica experimental, incluyendo importantes puntos de referencia de lo que se habra de fraguar ms tarde.

Tenor saxophonist Breuss Arrizabalaga is my choice for best musical find on Free Albums Galore. He has already been featured on his own album, Nfamoudou-Boudougou and with FMOL Trio. Arrizabalaga is an immensely creative musican with a firm understanding of avant-garde and free jazz. While his playing shows obvious influences of early free jazz musicians like Ayler, Dolphy, and Shepp, he has his own sound and vision.

Concert for Kowald was recorded in 2002 and is another excellent work. It is a single live track over 30 minutes long. This is a vastly changing performance going from moody soundscapes to free blowing chaos to fiery latin rhythms. He is well backed by a first-rate group of musicians with pianist Tsukiko Amakawa being especially noteworthy. Arrizabalaga is an artist that deserves wider recognition.

The emphasis on multistylism contributes an enhanced variety which causes the actual trio line-up to feel like a much larger ensemble.

Exploracin en tro de las posibilidades de la perfieria del ruido experimental, de tcnica ampliada, buscando entre construcciones rtmicas asimtricas y ostinatos en unsono que responden a una esttica hardcore sin tapujos. El nfasis en el multiestilismo aporta un enriquecimiento por medio de la variedad , lo que contribuye a que la sonoridad del tro parezca ms bien el resultado de un grupo mucho ms numeroso.

Adopting the dimensions of epic narratives akin to certain African traditions, an ensemble illustration of this particular conception of free jazz in a live 2CD format. A balance between winds and rhythm section, occasionally punctuated by the voice (oral tradition) and electronics and giving way to thickly, if carefully overlaid materials.

Adoptando la dimensin pica de ciertas narrativas propias de la tradicin africana, una ilustracin colectiva de esta particular concepcin del free jazz en un doble CD en directo. Equilibrio entre vientos y seccin rtmica, puntuados ocasionalmente por la voz (tradicin oral) y electrnica que dan lugar a una densa aunque cuidadosa superposicin de materiales.
