mimosa|moize . Live at Unit 3.03

image

Live at Unit 3.03 is a sequence of sound sketches that were spectrally deconstructed and reconstructed live, with intentions of engaging the listener with the space. Each sound used was mono allowing any stereo effect of movement perceived to be those created from the influence of the space itself.

The nature of performing at Unit 3.03 is generally one of a more domestic gathering than that of a public event. This shared domestic-come-temporary-social situation creates an interesting interaction with the sounds to be heard coming from within and beyond this personal and intimate space. Interestingly, this situation also directs ours attention inwardly to the sounds that we carry with us and outwardly to the ones that people carry with them.

This recording was taken during our very first live performance held at Unit 3.03, where we shared tea, coffee and cake, met old friends and new ones, and shared old stories and made new memories.

Recorded on the afternoon of March 20th, 2010, at Unit 3.03, London, UK.

Thanks to Dead Wood and Jonny Hill who also performed that day and to everyone who visited our home on that memorable afternoon.

Also, special thank you to Kimvi Nguyen for providing the artwork, a gift on that day.

Jamie Drouin : Live in Paris

image

Live in Paris is the culmination of several field recordings made over the past three years for site-specific installations, works for CD, as well as unrealized projects, and is an attempt to find a new life for the recordings through improvised performances. Heard outside of their original context, typically as parts of concentrated investigations into empty spaces, the recordings are allowed to move freely around the listener’s imagination, inventing new associations, and venturing into more lyrical and poetic territory than I normally explore. This is particularly evident in the addition of a voice, a rare instance for me, but an effort to contrast my fascination for empty spaces with a space of complex human drama: a timeless and placeless bar described through an ingeniously woven story by Lance Olsen.

Live in Paris stands on its own as a unique work, exploring the source material in ways that surprised even myself, and is a fitting encapsulation and re-envisioning of the recordings as I move on to my next subject matter.

Included with this release are two photographs made during my tour which are being made available in ready-to-use wallpaper sizes.

Additional samples
Olivia Martin – bassoon
Lance Olsen – voice

Recorded on October 7, 2009 at La Société de Curiosités, Paris

A special thank you to Alexandre Grauer and Clémence Seurat at Qwartz for organizing the concert and for your hospitality.

Brittle Stars / Yann Novak : Long Distance Vol. 3

image

Dragon’s Eye Recordings is pleased to release the third installment in its 3″ CD-R series, Long Distance. This volume features a collaboration between Yann Novak and Kev Rolfe (Brittle Stars). Recorded during Novak’s stay in Manchester, this installment of Long Distance continues the previous volumes theme of two artists that have never met collaborating in person. Beginning with a rippling mantra-like melody that slowly distorts into a complex and rhythmic play, the single track, “Melody to Maelstrom,” works to maintain the structure of the original melody. The slight hint of rhythm leads to a hypnotic state as the tones become more distorted; and eventually everything bleeds into complete abstraction. The piece comes full-circle in the end, commenting on the transition from simplicity to complexity, and back again

“The Long Distance project, which combines two artists who have never met before collaborating in person, continues with Dragon’s Eye label owner Yann Novak teaming up with Brittle Stars (Kev Rolfe). Rolfe has spent the last four years recording under the Brittle stars monika and experiments with detuned guitar, rewiring, differing harmonics and claims influence of ‘Indonesian Music, Indian Ragas and artists like Glen Branca’. He has recently had tracks of his included in Bruce La Bruce’s Otto: Up with the dead.

Melody to Maelstrom, is the lone track on this limited edition (100) 3” CD, an epic build of hypnotic rhythm building to complete abstraction. Crisp digital processing and marked tonal control is shown by Yann Novak who manipulates and enhances the soundscape, a ‘mantra like melody, that slowly distorts into a complex and rhythmic play’.

Clearly this music has the hallmarks of connoisseurs of extreme noise; it would attract keen listeners who have an ear for guitar noise and the sound of digital noise. Yann Novak’s experiments in environmental sound are quite evident in the piece and this would go down a treat at experimental noise festivals. It brandishes sharp edged control of the sound palette like a weapon. It is also clear that the textural noise will play well within brooding and introspective soundtrack work.”

Wyndel Hunt / Thom Heileson : Unit of Selection

Wyndel Hunt / Thom Heileson : Unit of Selection

Catalogue: de5016

Duration: 49:58 + 17:18

Format: 5″ CD-R + 5′ DVD-R

Edition: 150

Year: 2008

Dragons Eye Recordings is pleased to present the release of Unit of

Selection, a collaboration between Wyndel Hunt and digital media

artist Thom Heileson, in which Heilesons films are interpretations of

Hunts sound pieces. The collaboration grew organically out of the

realization that the two artists had similar aesthetic and conceptual

goals, wherein Hunts sound works and Heilesons video works speak a

kindred language–via different media. Unit of Selection aims to

fashion new perceptual sculptures, in which the textural fluctuations

and movements of each medium carve into one another.

The process began with Hunts sound compositions, which are motivated

by an unstructured emotional template. This template, combined with

the idea of an “anonymous force that shapes,” determined the aesthetic

order of pitch, tone, and volume. Heileson then created the imagery

with an interpretive visualization process, articulating emotive

tonalities that paralleled Hunts compositions. The results emphasize

Hunt and Heileson’s shared desire to represent the movement of

abstract objects in an imagined perceptual space. Versions of the

pieces included in Unit of Selection have been installed in galleries

in San Diego and Seattle.

Steve Peters : Filtered Light

Steve Peters : Filtered Light (chamber music 4)

de5017

Duration: 60:00

Format: 5″ CD-R

Edition: 250

Year: 2008

Press Release: PDF

Chamber Music is a series of site-specific sound installations derived from recordings of the empty rooms in which the work is exhibited. No people are present, so the only sounds recorded are those that are incidental to the building itself, or those that leak in from outside. These recordings of ambient room tone are processed to isolate subtle resonant frequencies that become the only materials of the piece. Aside from equalization and gating, no other electronic treatments or instruments of any kind are used. Every version of the piece is different, due to the acoustic and architectural characteristics of each venue.

Filtered Light was made in 2008 for the University of New Mexico Art Museum, in conjunction with the annual UNM Composers Symposium. Fourteen frequencies between 70 Hz and 3 kHz were extracted from an unedited hour-long recording made in the empty gallery. That hour was divided into thirty-two segments of varying length that recombined randomly in the continuous four-channel installation. The mix heard here represents one set of possible combinations. A low playback volume is recommended.

Thanks to Yann Novak, Manny Rettinger, Chris Shultis.

Yann Novak : In Residence

Yann Novak : In Residence

de5014 43:00 2008

Dragon’s Eye Recordings is proud to announce the release of In Residence by Yann Novak. In Residence is the final product of three artist residencies Novak attended in the fall of 2007. From each residency a composition was born, compiled here based on their thematic similarities. On In Residence, Novak explores the feelings of isolation some artists experience while working in solitary conditions for long stretches of time. Novak utilized this time to push his process to the limit by abstracting his source materials beyond recognition. The result is a lonely sound world with distant sounds passing by, while the entire piece quivers with anticipation. Mastered by Kamran Sadeghi.

Edition: 250

1. Now and then forever

2. Not any time soon

3. Not forever but for a long time

4. Not now but sooner than expected

5. A skeleton for longer than not

Dragons Eye Recordings is proud to present A Skeleton, soon and then Forever by Marc Manning. A Skeleton, soon and then Forever addresses the underlying notion that life is only a fraction of the time that the body endures on earth. The songs attempt to communicate the insight that our bodies will in fact be skeletons for most of their existence. The album is sparse and melancholic with a focus on room sound and analog tones. It treats the guitar as a chime-like instrument that falls in and out in kaleidoscopic phases. The first 100 copies of the record sold online are accompanied by a small booklet of drawings that were made during the recording and mixing sessions. Recorded and mastered by Kamran Sadeghi.

Marc Manning / Yann Novak | Pairings

Dragon’s Eye Recordings is pleased to announce the release of Pairings, the first full length collaboration between Marc Manning (Heavy Lids) and Yann Novak. Pairings is an exploration into a now standard formula, a traditional instrument processed by laptop. Novak and Manning choose to use the formula to explore their often similar emotional states resulting in six improvisations divided into pairs by instrument. The album moves gently through melancholic drones and ambient washes, ending in a soft flurry of fractured melodies. Pairings showcases the tender relationships between songs, instruments and musicians.

Low-fi compositions illustrating the coexistence of noise side-products and veiled melodic materials of nave character in a slowly developing stream of sound. Rhythmic cycles seem to permeate the whole work, establishing long, static pulses related to the harmonic pedals which contribute towards the creation of an of an inner regularity impression flowing beneath the outer harshness, thus presenting two unrelated, parallel levels.

Superimposed clusters of electronic and concrete materials. Occasional interruptions of the flow by way of punctuation, introducing complexity in otherwise horizontal and uneventful sound layers. Akin to vast masses of oscillator-generated waves, the resulting colour surfaces are contrasted without any alteration of the static character. Depth is conveyed to sounds by means of various superimpositions of materials carefully layered and contributing to the teeming of surfaces. The overall outlook is reminiscent of a return to industrialism if portrayed from a minimal and drone-based perspective.

Taking a physical space as departure point, the piece presents two complementary stances in relation to its sound. From a more contemplative approach to the space, its frequencies overlaid in order to weave a massive drone out of its inner sounds, to a more active one that selects specific materials and sound areas and displays them against the constant backdrop, like actors in an extremely slow sonic drama before a single backcloth, thus managing to create a sound metaphor of the actual space by means of sound.

Featuring the edited sounds from an installation piece of the same name, where the inflatable nature of the piece is directly connected to the sounds, since they were taken from the inflation fans, we encounter massive humming drones of blurred, fricative nature and constant high overtones that coexist in horizontal, static manner. The sheer scale of the process renders the vast breathing cycles virtually imperceptible.
