John Young – Lieu-temps

John Young (1962) is one of those prolific and talented New Zealand sound artists, whom we have come to appreciate very much. Personally I raised an eyebrow over his humorous and discerning electroacoustic text-sound piece Sju, which recently was released on a CD called New Zealand Sonic Art 2000 from The Music Department of Waikato University in Hamilton, New Zealand. That piece deals with the different pronunciations of the Swedish word sju, which means seven. It is very hard for any English-speaking person to pronounce the word in a sensible way, but even within Sweden there are at least two major ways of pronouncing it in fact according to social class, usually! and a number of minor deviations from those major ways. John Young discovered the peculiarities of this word while residing in Sweden for a while some years ago, and hid deliberations turned into a little masterwork!

The electroacoustic works of Elsa Justel are striking for their rich morphological invention: canvases made of minuscule yet consistently varied sounds; stratified figures made of multiple simultaneous shots, intertwining with one another; tremblings turning into sharp and lightning objects; objects of all sizes, objects so diverse they relentlessly keep hold of your attention. This is undeniably a form of music demanding active listening, a state of awareness to the smallest palpitations, music that always has rich meanings to unveil, no matter how many times you listen to it. In fact, the more you listen to it, the more it becomes both mysterious and habitable. It is music to be cherished for its sophistication, vividness and subtlety. This music imitates nothing; it is there, warm and savant, controlled yet free, vigorous and intelligent. It adds to the real world a presence consisting of its own immanence. It is this presence that Elsa Justel has been trying to bring forth, through her unyielding work as a composer, and succeeding so rightfully that she immediately wins us over. I see Elsa Justels music as surplus life, absolutely essential to our existence.

Apparently starting off from a work for instrument-and-tape format, these pieces broaden the concept in several directions: the instrument featured is an early electronic one (ondes Martenot) and the electronic backcloth features a three-dimensional, spatialized character rendering the interaction between both far more complex. The compositions feature a sophisticated mixture of concerns ranging from concrete sources, sophisticated electronic textures exploring the legacy of acoustic sound masses of contemporary ascendancy and an original musical gesture, managing to orchestrate complex sound in a coherent whole.

Partiendo de lo que parece ser un formato de obra para instrumento y cinta, las obras amplan dicho concepto en varias direcciones: el instrumento incluido es de la primera electronica (ondas Martenot) y el trasfondo electroacstico incluye un elemento de espacializacin en tres dimensiones que hace la interaccin entre ambos mucho ms compleja. Las composiciones presentan una compleja mezcla de aspectos, desde la utilizacin de fuentes concretas, sofisticadas texturas electrnicas que exploran el legado de masas sonoras acsticas de origen contemporneo y un gesto musical original, que logra orquestrar sonidos complejos en un todo coherente.

Deeply concerned with the material dimension of sound and the relationship between sound phenomenon and message, the works explore the abstract dimension of the sound in itself, occasionally changing the focus to its communicative dimension. Careful attention is paid to spatialization, as the author?s concern with sound masses is clearly manifested through his use of volumes, surfaces and textures in a manner both simple and sophisticated. Not surprisingly, a certain impressionistic quality can be traced in this composer?s sculptural approach, clearly indicating the ascendancy of visual art concerns and the importance attributed to and the associative connotations of the sonic.

Profundamente intersado por la dimensin material del sonido y la relacin entre el fenmeno sonoro y el mensaje, sus obras exploran la dimensin abstracta del sonido en s mismo, cambiando el enfoque de forma ocasional hacia el plano comunicativo. En ellas se presta una cuidada atencin a la espacializacin, mientras que la preocupacin del autor por las masas sonoras se refleja claramente a travs de su utilizacin de volmenes, superficies y texturas de un modo simple a la par que sofisticado. No resulta sorprendente que haya un cierto carcter impresionista en el planteamiento escultrico del compositor, lo que apunta a la influencia de cuestiones procedentes del medio visual y la importancia asignada a las conotaciones asociativas de lo sonoro.

Conceiving sound as independent cells, various concrte materials are used as a source to develop small, processed units that allow different combinations. The ?pieces? revolve around a central concern with pulse that somehow hints to the realm of the industrial and enables the desired exchangeability. Other pieces explore more abstract sound realms inspired in literary sources and are concerned with the illustration of the far-east atmospheres depicted in the fiction. The overall approach to spatialization, rhythmic structure and general outlook indirectly points to a minimalist ascendancy subtly dyeing the overall aesthetic.

Desde una concepcin del sonido como clulas independientes, los diversos materiales concretos se emplean a modo de punto de partida para desarrollar pequeas unidades procesadas que permitan diversas combinaciones. Las ?piezas? giran en torno a una preocupacin central por el pulso que apunta en cierto sentido al mbito industrial y permite el deseado carcter intercambiable. Otras piezas exploran mbitos sonoros ms abstractos, de inspiracin literaria y se centran en la ilustracin de las atmsferas del lejano oriente planteadas por la ficcin. El acercamiento del conjunto en relacin a la espacializacin, la estructura rtmica y planteamiento de conjunto sugieren un origen minimalista que tie la esttica global.

Thoroughly concerned with the enormity of space, the work of this composer features a marked visual line, exploring spatial vastness, evoking dimensions in the distance, as seen through a wide lens, focusing on the sheer size of the portrayed. The deep experience of spatial movement pays homage to cinema while the experience of witnessing sound sources within a three-dimensional space is blended with that of orchestras and choirs.

Un profundo inters por la enormidad del espacio caracteriza la obra de esta compositora, que tiene un carcter marcadamente visual y explora la vastedad espacial, evocando dimensiones lejanas, como se ven a travs de un ojo de pez, centrndose en la mera escala de lo retratado. La profunda experiencia del movimiento espacial rinde tributo al cine, mientras que la experiencia de fuentes sonoras en un espacio tridimensional se funde con la de la orquesta y el coro.

The processing of instrumental sources enables a true deconstruction of the materials resulting in a myriad shards spread along the acoustic space. Subsequent layers of processed or electronic sounds are added, increasing the abstract nature of the landscape portrayed if the narrative intention ?wholly permeating the result- brings in a complex framework quite distanced from electroacoustic traditions. The concrete elements are similarly displayed in an original fashion, transforming them into daring linguistic aspects by bending the materials so as to fit them into the expressive forms.

El procesado de fuentes instrumentales permite deconstruir los materiales en una miriada de fragmentos y distribuirlos por el espacio acstico. Se aaden capas sucesivas de sonidos electrnicos o procesados, aumentando el carcter abstracto del paisaje representado si bien la intencin narrativa ?que permea el conjunto- confiere un marco complejo alejado de tradiciones electroacsticas. Los elementos concretos tambin se despliegan de forma original, convirtindose en atrevidos elementos lingsticos al ser moldeados de forma que encajen en las formas expresivas.

An itinerary through vast, translucent spaces in constant metamorphosis dyed in various sonic hues. Darker, rougher textures alternate with lighter tones, while angular spaces reveal a wealth of depths and a true catalogue of surfaces. The materials feature instrumental, concrete and electronic sound, displaying electronic/processed noise along with tonal materials, as in a renewed version of compositions for tape and live instrument.

Un itinerario por espacios vastos, translcidos en constante cambio, teidos de colores sonoros diversos. Texturas oscuras y rugosas alternan con tonos ms claros, mientras que espacios angulares revelan ricas profundidades y un verdadero catlogo de superficies. Los materiales incluyen sonido instrumental, concreto y electrnico, apareciendo el ruido electrnico y el procesado junto a materiales tonales, como en una versin renovada de la composicin para cinta e instrumento en vivo.

The experience of sound spaces leads to an immersive conception where the dimensions are coherently explored by means of sound spatialization. The sounds respond to an inner logic, encompassing their development, timbre and spatial behaviour. La experiencia de los espacios sonoros conduce a una concepcin inmersiva en la que las dimensiones se exploran mediante la espacializacin sonora. Los sonidos responden a una lgica interna, que abarca su desarrollo, timbre y comportamiento en el espacio. Las fuentes de sonido procesado aluden a piezas clsicas, al tiempo que revelan intereses estticos que responden al desarrollo de gustos tempranos.
