Various Artists . APTEK Compilation

image

The idea of travelling in sound was always close to our general idea of being interested in music – music understood not only as a purely artistic form of expression but also as something intangible yet bearing lots of sociological, philosophical and even political meanings. Not to mention that unexpected sounds are the only ones worth listening to. Probably.

This compilation here is another step into rather unknown territories of sound art – unknown for the westernized ear, for those who have got enough music in their own area (area of interest as well as in terms of geography). Still, when you try to look further than your own familiar neighbourhood, you may find that what’s happening out there is at least as interesting as the stuff you are used to.

Zenial, the author of this compilation, has been doing his research in the East (or post-Soviet countries) for quite a long time and some of his discoveries are real treasures.

Experimental music from countries like Moldova, Macedonia, Uzbekhistan etc. may sound exotic to you, yet give it a try and find out how do they do it there and why are doing it in that specific way. The tracks on the album come from such forgotten lands (at least music-wise) but also from places closer to the main circulation of sound art (like Poland or Russia). What do they have in common? The answer is hidden in the title of the compilation – try to find it out by yourselves.

Denis Kolokol : Ily

image

Denis Kolokol is a Ukrainian sound artist, composer and performer currently residing in Krakow, Poland. He used to be a key figure in the underground scene of Almaty, Kazakhstan, also run some really good zines. You can find out more about him at his MySpace profile.

Ily is a new, brilliant release from Denis. Here’s what he writes about his inspirations and about this music:

The river Ily begins at the Tien Shan in China at an altitude of 3540m. It covers the distance of 1439km, of which 815km within the territory of Kazakhstan, where it’s one of the largest rivers. Flows into the western part of the lake Balkhash – at its outfall the vast delta is formed with several permanent branches (Zhideli, Topar) and numerous small lakes and backwaters. The river strongly affects the Balkhash – this salt lake’s is almost half fresh only because of the Ily.

At the beginning of 20th century the river was a busy trade road from he west of China, but today it is popular only among romantics who like to play their guitars at the campfire, and adventure tourists who raft on the river down to the Balkhash. Try to trace its flow on a map – if you look long and attentively, if your eyes catch every ringlet on its course, you will probably start hearing the music.

Composed by Denis Kolokol, except (3), which is the improvisation together with Alexander Chikmakov.
Cover photographs are by Mila Teshaeva and Denis Kolokol.

Thanks to my teacher Marek Cho?oniewski and the staff of Narodowe Centrum Kultury, who made this all possible through their Gaude Polonia grant.

Dedicated to all my friends in Almaty, Kyiv, and Kraków..

Patryk Lichota / Piotr Tkacz : Some Other Time?

image

Patryk Lichota and Piotr Tkacz are improvisers living in Poznan. They play together since August 2007, pieces on this album was recorded during one session in December 2008.

Patryk Lichota – saxophone with preparations
Piotr Tkacz – turntable+objects

After a storm, the man in a hat always went at the seaside.
He collected as much saltness as possible into his hat. On his way
back home, his hat served him as a bowl. He added vegetables and
various seafood into the right amount of previously collected saltness.
While eating, he was able to sense all the experiences
of sailors, who died during the storm. His entire face grew moist, and
he closed his eyes in fear of yet another wave blow. He felt the
sailors’ lament and their urge to escape back home, to hide under their
mothers’ wings and eat good, salty dinner.
Then he finished drinking his soup, opened his eyes widely and saw
his mother, wiping drops off his face.
(translation: Maciej Janasik)

Process & Lisa Ullen : Live in Krakow

Process & Lisa Ullen : Live in Krakow

Improvised music scene in Krakow seems to be very lively and rapidly developing. The recording here is a good example of what we mean.

Well-known Swedish pianist, Lisa Ullen, came to the city in July and performed an astonishing concert with local musicians – the Process ensamble featuring Rafal Mazur on custom-made acoustic bass guitar, Rafal Drewniany on laptop and electronic devices and Michal Dymny on electric guitar.

Starting off with a low but intense sound the performance went into the area of unstoppable fury and passion. Four great musicians understanding each other almost perfectly made this slighlty more than 30 minutes a really enjoyable concert.

Marc McNulty – Minumism..

Marc McNulty – Minumism

tng1035

It’s our huge pleasure to present here new recordings from American composer Marc McNulty.

Three pieces of experimental electro-acoustic, organic and in a way very meditative nature, prepared with self-made software and various sound sources.

Starting with a kind of shorter introduction at Elenime, than turning into slowly developing its powers title track and back to the end with Soontaege which is again of quieter nature, the whole material is very involving and powerful.

TAPLIKORT / JABLUNKOX / GRUSZCZYK – Live in Jazz Club Tesin

[tng3012]

Noise Drone Eloctro-Acoustic performance

Live in Jazz Club Tesin, 27.12.05, 18.2.06

artists:

Mo/Tec (Tomek Rylko) – Moog synthesizer, radio

Tom Taplikort – laptop

Marian Gruszczyk – laptop

Jablunkox (Rafal Rylko) – sampler ESI 2000, Airsynth

The recordings presented here are documentation of a performance by four friends interested in the same areas of music – minimal, noise, so called “new music”.

Spacious, yet very dense music, filled with voices, drones, synths and samples create an atmosphere of noisy soundscape and impression of perfect understanding between the musicians.

Different backgrounds of each of the artists make their music sound very open-minded and drags the tracks in various directions, from noise to minimal melodies, to micro clicks and even to click-dub.

The musicians involved in this project are Czech and Polish and the only two concerts they performed together took place in Tesin, a city located on the Czech-Polish border

Zbigniew Karkowski – Uexkull

tng1023

Uexkull is an early work by the Polish composer of noise and experimental music, Zbigniew Karkowski. It was composed in 1988-89 and released as a CD in 1990. It has been out of print until being re-released by the Audio Tong netlabel as a free and legal online album.

This is essentially a drone work lasting an hour. Double bass mingles with electronic sounds to create a very minimalist work. The composition also features the alto voice of Karin Westman but, to be honest, I couldn’t tell you exactly where. Patient listening will reveal subtle but vast layers of songs with surprising changes and intensity. The piece starts quietly but slowly develops into a tapestry of industrial s

ALEXEI BORISOV – Live In Kaliningrad

ALEXEI BORISOV – Live In Kaliningrad

[tng3009]

Alexei Borisov is one of the most prominent and acclaimed Russian audio artists. He started his career in the begining of the 1980s as a guitarist for a new wave band Center, then he created Night Prospekt – an avant-garde, electronic oriented underground audio collective which won a huge critical acclaim in Russia.

Known also as a DJ in Moscow’s clubs and radios, he continues his impressive career as an experimental / noise musician and a member of projects as known as Volga or F.R.U.I.T.S.

The basic elements of the current recording are soundfragments from my solo CD “Polished Surface Of A Table”, released by Electroshock in 2004.

The fragments have been processed by laptop and some analog devices and completed by voices, foundsounds and manipulations with cassette player, mp3 player and minidictophone.

The live was supportetd by a video “Diploma award ceremony”, filmed by myself at my doughter’s school in Moscow four years ago and processed later by Anton Nikkila and myself in Helsinki.

Special thanks: Sergei Letov, Danil Akimov, Anton Nikkila, Lukasz Szalankiewicz, Artemy Artemiev, Slava Sky.

SYMM.FACE – A Man In The Sink

SYMM.FACE – A Man In The Sink

[tng1016]

Symmetric Face is a solo project of Alexey Taroutz from Moscow and this is his debut release.

His music is an interesting example of electroacoustic sound sculpture created by manipulating and processing analogue sound sources.

To create this record I used analogue devices and computer – says the artist.

The sound itself is important for me – the effect it produces on the listener – so it doesn’t matter what equipment I use. Sometimes I use only analogue gear or a computer. But It’s more interesting for me to mix both.

The concept is very important as well – the idea comes first. After I get the idea of what I want to depict – I start working on the ways of achieving and creating the final image.

AVVA / LUSE – Live in Prague

AVVA / LUSE – Live in Prague

[tng3007]

We are glad to present here an audio documentation of one of the highlights of 2006 edition of Prague’s Stimul Festival.

Four masters of experimental audio and video art joined their forces in two projects named AVVA and LUSE.

AVVA is a project of Toshimaru Nakamura (non-input mixer) and Billy Roisz (feedback video). Their set is minimal, based on quiet, high frequencies, fascinating with the smoothness of its flow and subtle changes of its structure.

Then LUSE – another project of Billy Roisz, this time collaborating with two turntable maestros: eRikm and dieb13. The 40-minutes long set is full of unexpected quotations and references, changes of mood and atmosphere, sounds like a good fun for both musicians and listeners.

It’s free for download so just do so and follow their ideas and find as much pleasure from these recordings as you can – there’s lot of it in this music for sure…

DAGUE DE MISERICORDE – Naufrageur

DAGUE DE MISERICORDE – Naufrageur

[tng1015]

“Naufrageur” means “wrecker” in French. A set of 4 improvisations recorded on the 5th of June 2006. Discrete metamorphoses. Repetive structures are slowly transformed. Sometimes unleashed, sometimes quiet, almost empty and silent.

DAGUE DE MISERICORDE – Naufrageur

Dague De Misericorde is Aurore Dudevant (clarinet) + Philippe Zulaica (violin).

About themselves:

We are also known as Drone and Forces Mobiles.

We improvise without any predefined rule or structure.

We try to create minimal / basic / repetitive compositions.

So constrating mistakes and accidents become events.

Silence is one of our instrument.

We play together once a week since 2005.

During one hour we improvise a strange and crashing conversation between us.

YANNIS KYRIAKIDES & LUCIO CAPECE – Juncture

image

Juncture is the first part of AudioTong’s first double release which comes from an excellent new electronics/improvisation duo: Yannis Kyriakides (laptop) and Lucio Capece (soprano saxophone, bass clarinet).

The album was recorded at Antonin Rayon’s studio in Paris in January 2003. Yannis describes this session:

I remember writing that I felt the atmosphere of what we recorded was akin to a wind blowing on a distant planet! My memories of that day were very nice. We were squeezed into the small studio of a friend of Lucio’s, Antonin , in Paris it was a few days after new Year (03-01-03). Lucio was squeezed into a corner somewhere – I was on the floor by the door. Perhaps we were in a spaceship going to these planets after all!

And the meaning of “juncture”?

1. The act of joining or the condition of being joined.
2. A place where two things are joined; a junction or joint.
3. A point in time, especially a critical point.
4. The transition or mode of transition from one sound to another in speech.

I like the meaning of ” a critical point in time”.
