Gas Tank Orchestra . Homeshed

image

“What first attracted me to the famous GTO was this notion of using metal objects for music. I was (and am) an industrial music fan, so I picked up some recordings for a listen. Rather than music that was simply bombastic, as was often the flavor of industrial at the time, I heard a music that used parts of cars to create something deeper and more soulful– this was industrial on the brink of jazz, or jazz on the brink of industrial– a music that spoke to my heart and mind and that I think is truly inspired.”– Thomas Park, 2011

This release contains previously unreleased material from legendary DIY band founded in early 1990′s in New Orleans using gas tanks picked off the street as instruments

Mister Vapor . Complex Silence 6

image

“With Complex Silence 6, ambient magician Mister Vapor puts his trademark Industrial Ambient stamp upon the Series. This mesmerizing long-form work has a deeply groaning drone at its foundation, while drifting and whispering higher-toned textures render a swirling, rushing atmosphere. In the middle, the constant, unending hum of a giant generator or cosmic wheel grinds slowly but purposefully onward, sometimes hinting at an unseen darkness or mystery looming somewhere beyond. All these layers mean this piece has plenty of different focal points for your listening pleasure.”

“Fans of Mister Vapor, as well as fans of Industrial Ambient and Experimental works will no doubt love this fantastic rendition (and decidedly abstract interpretation) of Complex Silence. With its definite sense of driving motion and direction from beginning to end, Complex Silence 6 is a wild, fun ride with Mister Vapor at the helm–where no Complex Silence has gone before!”- Phillip Wilkerson, 2010.

Digital Mass . Amalgamated Wreckage

image

The anonymous musical collective “Digital Mass” strikes for a second time with this fun, noisy and chaotic netrelease. The Mass took tracks from Mystified’s seminal “Amalgam” release and remixed them using a fractal mixer. Strange progressions were tossed into the generative blender and added together, making for a wild sonic ride.

Please note that this release marks Treetrunk’s 100th effort. We at Treetrunk are proud to celebrate this milestone with Digital Mass, and thank all of you out there for listening to all the great music.

Mister Vapor: Slipping The Bonds Of Gravity

image

A new release from Mister Vapor. Here are two mid- to- longform pieces on the familiar subject of deep space. They are compositions, true, and they are also minimal and melodic, verging on sheer atmospheria. Good for peripheral listening; excellent with headphones.

Anton Mobin : Inner Collapse

image

Treetrunk is proud to bring you this work by French musician and sound artist Anton Mobin: “My work is called ‘Inner Collapse’. It’s an electro-acoustic collision between home-made instruments… Quite drony & ghostly sound art–
Not an improvisation, but an original composition for Treetrunk. . .” –Anton Mobin, 2009

Mystified : Mystified Live

image

On August 1, 2009 at 4 AM Central U.S. time, mystified made their first official live performance on WDBX Carbondale FM, 91.1. Thomas recorded the session, which was a generative bell drone, continuously shifting and never twice the same.

The station stream reportedly was down, so Thomas wanted to post the audio of the set for friends and interested parties to listen.

Special thanks to DJ Dave X.

mystified : Amalgam

image

[treetrunk085] (May 31, 2009)

“Amalgam” is a large collection of early audio experiments created by mystified, mostly during the year 2006. Granulated synthesis, strange looping techniques, shortwave, AM radio, household objects, and other techniques and sources were used.

These works were all slated for release, but due to technical, financial, or other reasons, most tracks were never successfully introduced.

Some of these are quite primitive, while more are like complete songs.

Thomas of mystified would like to encourage musicians to use sounds they like from “Amalgam” in their own compositions (providing due credit, of course). Others are welcome simply to listen, possibly while giggling, screaming, or shaking their heads.

Various Artists- This Is Not A Test

Various Artists- This Is Not A Test

[treetrunk056] (August 23, 2008)

This very special release from Treetrunk documents and celebrates an event that happened August 11, 2008 at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. The event was called “This Is Not A Test: The Chicago Sound Experience”, and was curated by Margaret Noble ( www.margaretnoble.net ). “This Is Not A Test” was one of a series of Audio Picnics at the Pavilion, designed to provide visitors with free and enjoyable audio experiences. The event was quite successfull, drawing a large and attentive crowd. It lasted for 3 hours, from 6 to 9 PM.

Here is what Margaret Noble wrote in the original program notes:

“This evenings recorded arts concert brings together sound art, spoken word and field recordings from around the world for the sole purpose of listening. These works exist without the accompaniment of visual imagery except for your surroundings. Although many of these recordings have musical elements, these works aim to pull the listener in from a different type of perception which may or may not include patterns, melody or rhythm.

The focus of these works is place, space and narrative as they occur in Chicago and beyond. Some works are historical; others are abstract. Some listeners may choose to listen without expectation by avoiding reading the artists notes. In this case, sounds become ones own interpretation based on independent experience. Other listeners may elect to follow the program notes closely. In this case, artistic technique and vision illustrate the works from the perspective of the creator. . .”

C. Reider (of Vuzh Music & Drone Forest) and Treetrunk Records present “Inconstant”. Artist Statement: “I believe the Constant series is one of the most important things going on today among drone / ambient / experimental musicians in the underground, because it amounts to a conversation, a dialogue… each person saying ‘Look here’s what I think a drone can sound like’, and then there are responses to that, and responses to that. “Inconstant” is a subtractive remix of the Constant series, numbers one through twelve. I took each of those twelve drones and filtered as much of the drone out of them as possible. One of the Oblique Strategies says ‘Destroy the Most Important Thing’ — when you remove the drone from a drone, what are you left with? It is not the drone, it is the dust shed from the drone. It is not the drone, it is a map of the freckles on the skin of the drone. Thanks to the authors of the first twelve Constants: Mystified, Stephen Philips, the Zen Potato, Ben Summers, Soul in Limbo, Tribe of Astronauts, C.P. McDill, Mystahr and Jon 7. Tracks with CC Non-derivative licenses were used with permission.

Scrap Heap – Reverse Eruption

image

Scrap Heap – Reverse Eruption

[treetrunk040] (March 18, 2008)

Unstable, gradually evolving organic, volcanic feedback. Hot geyser sprays erupt and fizzle before giving way to a deep earth-moving rumble with an intermittent crackling, as of a fire.

“Reverse Eruption” is a longform generative piece that came about as the result of my experimenting with audio software. I set the starting parameters for a series of delays, oscillators, and other effects, let the system run until it became imperceptibly quiet, and this wrote itself. It’s 70 minutes long, with some very faint sound left in at the end that may seem silent, in hopes you might feel it in the air.

Treetrunk likes this piece by Scrap Heap– it fits right in with the label. Enjoy!

Stephen Philips and mystified – Texture 2

Stephen Philips and mystified – Texture 2

[treetrunk036] (December 5, 2007)

Stephen Philips and mystified reworked a longform piece, adding various elements, creating the original “Texture One”, for Webbed Hand Records ( www.webbedhandrecords.com ). Several years later, Philips and mystified have created a new “Texture” piece, this one also based on an aquatic environment. “Texture 2″ is a simulated beach front, with waves of static replacing waves of water, and bass noise sculptures, drones and field recordings taking the place of other sounds.

Treetrunk Records is especially interested in the use of found sounds as source material– and we hope you will find the piece to be both relaxing and meditative.

Metek, Pythagora, Mystified

Metek, Pythagora, Mystified

[treetrunk034] (November 27, 2007)

This project represents an overseas collaboration between 3 artists: Metek, Pythagora and mystified. It was noise guru Metek who initiated the collaboration. Mystified quickly agreed and the talented Pythagora joined in to make three.

Samples were exchanged by cdr across the Atlantic. Metek remixed mystified, mystified remixed Metek, Pythagora remixed mystified, mystified remixed Metek and Pythagora, and so on. The result is an interesting combination of sounds and textures. Variety is definitely a call word for “Metek Pythagora Mystified”, as is quality.

Many found sounds including shortwave samples were used in the recordings, so Treetrunk feels that the release is appropriate to appear here. Enjoy!

Tribe Of Astronauts – Missive_2

 Tribe Of Astronauts – Missive_2

Tribe Of Astronauts – Missive_2

[treetrunk032] (November 20, 2007)

“Missive 2″ is a longform remix of the underground ambient hit, “Remote Missive” ( www.webbedhandrecords.com ). Like the original, it is based on space travel, and the idea of taking personal objects on space trips– contraband. This practice has been widespread, apparently, though not condoned by authorities. In this mix, emphasis has been placed on texture and stereo effect. The Tribe hope you enjoy it.

Tribe of Astronauts is a loose recording collective consisting of some artists affiliated with Webbed Hand Records, Treetrunk Records, and other netlabels. It is an “anonymized” project, an opportunity for the artists to create work not in the style of their main projects.

Any netlabel artist may release work as Tribe of Astronauts on any netlabel, under the condition that they release the work under Creative Commons or Public Domain, and claim no ownership of or exclusive rights to the name “Tribe of Astronauts.”

K.M. Krebs – The Jade Furnace II

K.M. Krebs – The Jade Furnace II

treetrunk030 (September 22, 2007)

This is the second in The Jade Furnace series of albums. Like the first, the name is derived from a Taoist alchemical metaphor that denotes the space in which the great work of alchemical transformation takes place. I have always felt a very strong resonance between the process of creating music and the symbolism and metaphors of alchemy. This album continues my own exploration of the similarities and possibilities between the two.

This series of works is peculiar in that they are intended to occupy a space between ambient albums and sample CDs. I want to encourage you to experiment with it in ways you may not consider with most musical recordings you encounter. Play it on random, play several copies on random simultaneously. Play it slowly, backwards, through effects, or any combination of those. Also, I strongly encourage other musicians to sample, de-construct, and re-use these recordings in their own music. I only ask you credit me and would, of course, be interested in hearing the results of your work.

K.M. Krebs – Fog Sequences

[treetrunk021] (October 10, 2006)

K.M. Krebs has been kind enough to approach Treetrunk Records with his latest release, “Fog Sequences”. He explains:

“Inspired by a series of fog photographs I recently saw at the National Museum of Contemporary Art here in Korea. All the tracks began as output from a generative FM drone generator which was run through unpredictable distortion effects (all made in csound). The results were then used as a basis for composing these 6 tracks.”

Mysterious, ever-changing, generative– these unique soundscapes are sure to hold your rapt attention.

Pocka – Meditative Cycles Part I

[treetrunk029] (August 14, 2007)

“For the past few months I’ve been working on a series of recordings that are based from and intended for use w/ meditation. All sounds are created from simple sine wave generators and white noise, and layered on top of one another in certain cycles and slowly changing frequencies. My goal for these pieces is for each one to be about 30 minutes long, and it is slowly evolving into a series of recordings. And I figured I would like to share these pieces with others. . . and I instantly thought of Treetrunk. . .” – Brad Mitchell, Pocka

Treetrunk was especially impressed with the hypnotic quality of these recordings. Perfect for meditation, perfect for Treetrunk!

Akashic Crow’s Nest – Tertium_Quid

[treetrunk028] (July 25, 2007)

As for “Tertium Quid”, composer C.P. McDill of Akashic Crow’s Nest writes, “. . .it is a long-form piece of ‘orchestrated generative’ sound art. A little more complex than the previous two ACNs on Treetrunk in that it is composed from multiple generative outputs, assembled with a bass foundation, a recurring motif, and several distinct themes. . .”

mystified – Screams In Space

[treetrunk012] (November 26, 2005)

Drawing from horror film score experience, a fascination with noise, ambience, illbience, samples and generative music, mystified has created this interesting EP..

Imagine if, rather than the cheesy strings, the early ’50′s science fiction movies were scored using pots and pans, sheets of steel, and actual sounds from outer space– sounds emitted by the earth, by Jupiter, and other strange sources.

You would be close, in your imagination, to these 3 zany pieces.

K.M. Krebs – Phosphorous

K.M. Krebs – Phosphorous

[treetrunk025] (April 27, 2007)

Treetrunk recently learned that K.M. Krebs has returned to Canada, where his musical efforts continue:

“. . .I played a show last weekend with some fellows from the US. The turnout was very small due to its accidental scheduling with another electronic show. Regardless, I had a good time since I hadn’t played a live show for over two years. I was able to record it and wanted to offer it for release on Treetrunk. . . There is no tracklist, as a lot of it was new material with a lot of improvisational live mixing, as well as some generative components (the bell/chime section). However, you’ll probably catch the variation on the final track from ‘Fog Sequences’ at the end of the set.” — K.M. Krebs

Treetrunk Records was very impressed with this live set. It kept our attention throughout. We think you will like it, too!
