V/A – In Memoriam Nesterov

Nexsound ns59

This release is an extract from contemporary jazz and experimental music marathon dedicated to memory of Ukrainian improviser Oleksandr Nestrerov (1954 – 2005) curate by Alla Zagaykevych.

Oleksandr Nesterov was likely the most famous representative of Ukrainian jazz underground and modern improvisational music. He performed on bass-guitar, MIDI-guitar, grand piano, vibraphone, percussion, bassoon and contrabass. Oleksandr began his career as a bass-guitarist. He performed in a jazz-rock group “Videojazz”, popular in the USSR (1985-1988). In the beginning of 1990s Oleksandr changed his attitude to music and began a new creative stage. Improvisation became the main theme of his creative work. The first step towards this innovation was Aleksandr’s participation in a music quintet with Genadiy Ivchenko, Emil’ Sokolov (saxophones), Sergiy Shvirst (drums) and Sergiy Khmelyov (vibraphone). He was a leader of “The Modern Music Group” (1988) which united Petro Tovstukha (piano), Yuriy Yaremchuk (saxophones), Iryna Finish (violoncello) and Myhaylo Antonovych. Oleksandr collaborated with Kyiv “Theatre of drama and comedy” (1989) and participated in a Ukraine-France jazz festival “Dniprogastrol” (1991) which resulted in interesting acquaintance with the performers of the “ARFI” association from Lion, France. Also he was a participant of jazz festivals and forums devoted to modern music in Ukraine and abroad. Since 1995 Aleksandr has been mostly working with solo projects and creating musical explications of old movies. He collaborates with a folklore ensemble “Drevo”, Sergiy Khmelyov and Yuriy Yaremchuk. They were exactly the ones whom Aleksands created one of his best works with – the program named “Contaminated Sounds” devoted to the Chornobyl tragedy (2001).

Skyapnea : Vibrating Portraits

 Skyapnea : Vibrating Portraits

Skyapnea : Vibrating Portraits

Nexsound ns58

Can we use sounds to portrait someone? Can we paint using vibrating air to obtain a sound that represents something? What if sound could be used to design features belonging to other sensory spheres? Choosing a particular frequency could help to evocate a thin nose? A granular light? The fragrance of morning after a sunrise full of small rain? The taste of a coffee?

All these questions were contained in a reflection about abstract music sent to nine sound artists and they were asked to start from those question marks to reflect about the possible uses of sound as a representative media. The result are some very different sound portraits, from the biggest eruption of history captured in the drones of italian composer Elio Martusciello(ReR Megacorp) to the processed field recordings of the Mimerlaven mine in Norberg by the Nottingham based Flotel(Expanding), from the free jazz tones of the audio picture of his father in law by Autistici(12k,Kikapu) to the micro rhythms constructed on sounds captured from a Lomo camera by Maps and Diagrams(PAUSE_2,Smallfish,Cactus Island). The other artists who answered this unusual call are Lawrence English (Room40,Quatermass,Baskaru,Cronica), Salvatore Borrelli aka (etre)(Baskaru), He Can Jog(audiobulb, hippocamp), Gregg Kowalsky aka Ossobuco (Kranky, Nosordo) and Motion (12k,Fat Cat) who all gently took part in this challenge.

First 8 – In Tune

First 8 – In Tune

[ns57]

The debut album of a young Ukrainian electronic musician First 8 (pron. First Aid) is a harmonious combination of many sounds of different origins (acoustic instruments – electric guitar, amp, piano; field recordings and electronics). Names of the tracks (e.g. sleeping, winterspring) and the music itself embody the implicit idea of the album, which is – time manipulation. By means of sound purity the listener is kept in a stable reality contact without being drawn in time funnels while seasons pass by. Despite the amount and the diversity of sounds used, the sound stratification of the album is very plain and clear, which actually says more on the complexity than simplicity of the album.

[ns48]

Nole Plastique is a project of Roman Kutnov and others on occasion from city of Kazan’ / Far East Russia.

Nole Plastique creates warm, rich textured landscapes by mixing and sculpting the noises of computer processed acoustic instruments. Melodies and jumping cracked sounds make beautifully humming and gather round the listener a digital mist.

Violet – Universam

image

Improvised live recorded in Kyiv in A&T trade shop on 2nd of July 2005.
Concert was organized by Nexsound.
Other participants were Francisco Lopez, Michael Gendreau and Kotra.
Unfortunately other live sets are unavailable.

Jeff Surak, also known as Violet (as well as a whole bunch of other things
actually), was always closely connected to the area which we now identify as the
former Soviet Union, traveling there since twenty or so years. He’s also
frequently visiting the Ukraine, and on the second of July 2005, he played at
the A&T Trade Shop in Kyiv, a half hour solo piece of music. Violet plays his
form of drone music that is not set to lull the listener to sleep, but keep him
present and noting what is going on. Here he plays autoharp, effects and perhaps
some field recordings, and the whole thing is rather loud and piercing, through
the use of ever increasing feedback sounds. Half way through the piece collapses
and towards the end things get more introspective, towards a more ‘real’ drone
sound. It’s altogether a pretty solid live concert, full of tension and
excitement, good built-up and performed with great care. What more do you want?

Process #1

image

Process is a polymorphic (they always play in different staff) improvisation band from Krakow / Poland. This time they are: Holubowski on accordion, Nazarewicz on flute, Drewniany on electronics, Mazur(core member) on bass guitar. They play thick and deep combination of unprocessed acoustic instruments and electronics. Despite the fact that the project is quite young and started in 2004,
Process played live quite often and always in stuff of open-minded and highly skilled musicians.
