Antanas Dombrovskij : Before and After

mixthemixthemix # 10

This piece was composed by Antanas Dombrovskij and performed in the experimental music festival Garso Zona 2006 (Kaunas). For this piece author used samples that were provided by Arturas Bumsteinas (that was supposed to be a collaboration, but it came out to be purely Antanas’ music). Later curator of Garso Zona described this performance as “noise for dancing”. Greatest example in this genre!

Robert Smithson : Heap of Language

Robert Smithson : Heap of Language

Heap of Language by Robert Smithson performed by Laptop Quartet Twentytwentyone

…in the 1966 piece by American conceptual artist Robert Smithson, Heap of Language, the artist has created an architectonic form on gridded paper out of words which refer to language as well as embody it. Language phraseology speech tongue lingo vernacular the piece begins. It proceeds in an accumulative pile, the literal heap of the title, down into its broad base where the list ends with the word cipher. Readable and literal, the handwritten text has very little of an expressive quality – the writing is regular and even, fitting into the gridded strucure with all the correct proportion of a minimalist work…

…in the sonic interpretation of the Heap of Language laptop quartet Twentytwentyone recorded each word from the original drawing with the computer speech generator; later reworked, extended and compresed these recordings to the proper qualities/durations. The bottom text line is for the low sounds, the top line is for the high sounds and it is read from left to right (in the logic of a musical score)…

Gentle Knifing

image

The fruit of collaboration between Zan Hoffman (usa) and Gintas K (lt) done in 2005 using computers to exchange the sounds and manipulate them. 30 minute’s long bridge from Marijampole to Louisville (or vice versa).

One of the most productive world’s experimental musicians Zan Hoffman (arround 950 releases) from Louisville, USA works mainly in collaborative manner. Since 1984 he was soliciting short recordings through the mail for the collaborations with the artists worldwide.

Zan Hoffman says: “I’ve been pestering people by e-mail for years now to send me some “oneminute wonders” and the result has been fantastic. I’ve been collaborating with new people I’ve bumped into online. If years go by since the last time I’ve received a 15 x 1min. submission from someone who I liked working with, I’ll ask them again for more tracks. This has been the case with Jeff Surak (dc), Steffan De Turck (nl) and… Gintas K (lt).”

The first collaborative releases done from Gintas’ K materials were Your Life Has Been Buffered For You, The Prostitution Of Absurdity and Your Life Has Been Prepared For You (check the zeromoon for all). In 2005 Mr.Hoffman asked Gintas K for more sound recordings and from those he produced two releases under his Zanoinsect project- Gentle Knifing and Groping Knell. The former uses only Gintas K sources and the latter also incorporates sound sources of Zan.
