[Tristan PerichEighteen Linear Constructions, installation view / 2009]

Along the Twentieth Century, music has often been the driving force behind crucial innovations in visual arts, and the starting point for many artists. Without forgetting the role played by music in the development of abstract art, it was mainly during the Sixties that music provided a fertile ground for new approaches, new theories, new art forms, new aesthetics. John Cage was a musician working with artists and engineers. The very first performance (the Untitled Event at Black Mountain College in 1952) was a musical event, such as many Fluxus events during the Sixties. Furthermore, Fluxus adopted music notation for its peculiar “scores”. It was thinking to music that Umberto Eco first introduced the concept of “opera aperta”. And at the very beginning of Video Art lies the manipulation of the electronic signal, first experimented by Nam June Paik in music.

Loud Objects with Men’s Noise Choir at Webster Hall Studio from Tristan Perich on Vimeo.

PLAYLIST is an exhibition that wants to explore the role played by music in the adoption and manipulation, since the mid Nineties, of obsolete, digital as well as analogue, technologies: vinyls, old computers, game platforms and alikes. It’s our feeling, on the one hand, that electronic music culture has been of great importance for the development of low-tech, home-based media art; and, on the other hand, that – such as for the early Video Art – the manipulation of the digital stream is mainly grounded in musical research. The core of PLAYLIST will be the exploration of the “8bit movement”, spread out from the manipulation of obsolete game technologies in order to create new instruments to play music. The show will demonstrate that the retrogaming phenomenon in visual arts can be considered an outfit of a pretty musical phenomenon, that in a bunch of years spread out all over the world through festivals and clubs, occasionally influencing mainstream musicians; and that visual and musical research progressed on parallel paths, in the quest for lo-res sounds and aesthetics, synthetic colors and notes. For the first time, retro-gaming will be explored through the lens of musical production and distribution, displaying not only tracks, but instruments, tools, softwares and hardwares, skins and graphics, but also discographies, platforms and communities. Thus, PLAYLIST will serve as a starting point for an archive / collection of materials produced by artists and musicians, and as a relational context where visitors can practice with tools produced by artists, and take part in workshops, lectures, improvised performances.

Furthermore, PLAYLIST will try to provide a context for this kind of research, not necessarily game related, selecting seminal projects and artists that helped forging the conceptual frame in which retro-gaming took place.

Davis (UK), Jeff Donaldson / NoteNdo (DE), Dragan Espenschied (DE), Gino Esposto / Micromusic.net (CH), Gijs Gieskes (NL), André Gonçalves (PT), Mike Johnston / Mike in Mono (UK), Joey Mariano / Animal Style (US), Raquel Meyers (SP), Mikro Orchestra (PL), Don Miller / No-carrier (US), Jeremiah Johnson / Nullsleep (US), Tristan Perich (US), Rabato (SP), Gebhard Sengmüller (AT), Alexei Shulgin (RU), Paul Slocum (USA), Tonylight (IT), VjVISUALOOP (IT).

Futura 2010 Call for works

image

For its 2010 edition, the Futura festival is looking for fixed media works (acousmatic music, musique concrète, video art, hörspiel, etc.) around the ‘travel diary’ thematic.

The sent works may be ‘real’ diaries, elaborated with sound takes and/or recognizable images, but these diaries may also be ‘abstract’, without any identifiable sounds, concentrating only on remaining traces, impressions. The works evolving between these two poles are also, indeed, welcome.

It is all about drawing a large and original view of the ‘travel diary’, which is not only a journey in a geographical space, but rather the expression of an experience or a view on the surrounding world. As such, it is not absolutely necessary to have crossed back and forth the whole planet to submit a proposal, obviously travels are also metaphoric. It can be expressed through very diverse aesthetics and forms.

Nonetheless, we are not looking for ‘raw’, ‘objective’ soundscapes or field-recordings. To the contrary, we would like to program subjective works, and place at the centre of this thematic the perception of the traveller-composer-artist.

The submissions:

- The limited number of submissions is 2 works by composer, excepting works with video which amount is not limited.

- Only sonic works on tape medium should be submitted (acousmatic/concrète, radiophonic art…).
Please do not send proposals for live electronics or performances.

- Preference is given to stereophonic music (multiphonic works may be accepted, but always if a stereo mix is provided for the selection process).

- Works including video are also encouraged.

-Deadline for the reception of works on CD Audio only (no cd-r or DVD-Audio) or DVD (for videos) is fixed before January 31 2010 (post-marked).
At the following address: Futura, 62, avenue de Flandre F-75019 Paris, France.

- Fill necessarily the form you’ll find as an attachment and send it by email: info@festivalfutura.fr

- Also send by email a program note about the submitted work (20 lines max), a short biography and a picture (.tiff or .jpg) to info@festivalfutura.fr

Bernard Parmegiani : Chronos

image

Commissioned by Radio-France and realized in the studios of Groupe de recherches musicales (GRM now INA-GRM).

Bernard Parmegiani (Paris, France, 1927) started off as a sound engineer for French television (ORTF later known as RTF). Originally a mime during the four years studies at Lecoq & Decroux school, he joined the Groupe de recherches musicales (GRM) in 1959 for a two years master class. His first major work (Violostries) is composed in 1962 for a choregraphy performed for Thtre Contemporain d’Amiens directed by Jacques-Albert Cartier.

Pierre Schaeffer gave him the direction the Musique-Image departement at ORTF. He composed during that period for numerous film directors, such as R. Lapoujade, P. Folds, P. Kamler, V. Borowczyck, P. Kast, J. Baratier or P. Kassovitz. He furthermore extended his musical researches in the field of video-art after a journey through the US. He directed three musical videos when he returned: L’OEil coute (1973), Jeux d’artifices (1979) for the research departement of ORTF, plus L’cran transparent (1973) in Kln (Germany) at West Deutsche Rundfunk (WDR) during his residency. His interests goes also live: he interacted during the seventies with jazz practitioners for improv sessions with french jazz fellows J.-L. Chautemps, B. Vitet or M. Portal.

He went in London to perform live with The Third Ear Band.He realized numerous jingles & soundbites for public radio stations (France-Culture or France-Musique), public television service (Antenne 2) or airport (Aroport de Roissy).During his entire career, he finally realized music for stage (dance & theater), screen or media (radio & television alike). But he remains focused on electroacoustic music (or acousmatic music as defined by GRM long-time director Franois Bayle) conceived to be played back for the best rendition on the acousmonium broadcasting system developed by Groupe de recherches musicales (GRM).
