The members of this improvising trio come from the major port cities
of Hamburg, Chicago and Oakland.
Chicago based bryerton and Oakland based Damon Smith have collaborated
for over decade with artists such as Wolfgang fuchs, Frank Gratkowski,
Marco Eneidi, Burton Greene, John Butcher and Cecil Taylor. They have
developed a strong textural language together that stresses equality of
the bass and percussion with the other musicians as well as the close
cooperation between bass and percussion without resorting to
subordinate “time-keeping” roles.
Hamburg based trumpet virtuoso Birgit Ulher is without question one of
the most innovative and interesting trumpet players of her generation.
She has worked with Roger Turner, Michael Zerang, Tim Hodgkinson,
Rhodri Davies, Robyn Schulkowsky, John Edwards, Martin Blume and many
others. Her precise command of sonic possibilities of the trumpet and
wide ranging experience in improvised music make her an ideal
collaborator for Smith and Bryerton.
