Joseph Gray : Suite for String Quartet

A compostion for electronics and string quartet by Zachary James Watkins, a bay area composer. The piece reverses the usual associations with this classical, highly formalized, instrumentation by focusing on long tones and complex, atonal, frequency groupings. The chord structures are rich, mathematical and multi-layered due to tunings found in only the more recent canons.
The video element is an improvisational response to the string players and electronic conductor/modulator. It is pursuing a pure-form, non-verbal, interpretation of the sound.

The generative animation was performed with a custom processing patch controlled by an arduino based hardware controller box with 5 analog knobs and four digital on/off swithces.
