Selected reviews of Vignettes in the Spirit of Ellington:
“…one the great big band offerings on the past decade.”
?Bruce Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
“This is a sonically gorgeous recording…exploiting the colors of the various instruments to their fullest and frames the great soloists in different ways from solo spot to solo spot.”
?Francis Lo Kee, AllAboutJazz.com
“Here’s big band music that celebrates the past, but isn’t rooted in it.”
?Ron Wynn, Nashville City Paper
“…this CD definitely contains plenty of intriguing moments.”
?Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
“I think Jabbo’s CD is one of the finest jazz releases of the year. He truly captures the spirit of the Duke while expressing a unique and individual style simultaneously. And, it swings.”
?Christien Gagnier, CJAM-FM
“…while the sound of the ten pieces on Vignettes is richly colored in the Ellington manner, these are no J@LC recreation. Ware’s writing uses Ellington as a jumping-off?and sometimes stomping-off?point. It shares a certain nonchalance with some of Ellington’s later writing and the suites are clearly an inspiration (these are indeed vignettes, not a unified cycle of compositions).”
?John Chacona, Signal to Noise
