I first started conceiving solo percussion stuff in the late 90s out of self-developped free improv vocabulary. I admit much of what I did then actually bored me later, only very few old ideas wound up on this CD. When I received the invitation of the gligg-label to do a solo recording, I started to prepare music that, again, was open for influences from what I was excited about as a listener. I wanted to move away a bit from free jazz/free improv, give the whole thing a fresh-for-me perspective. There’s nothing “electronic” here, but several inspirations from electronic music. So this CD has its moments reflecting poppy stuff like Tujiko Noriko, M.I.A., again post-Drumbo drumming, Melt-Banana, but also Feldman, Scelsi, Ferneyhough and other 20th century classical stuff. Plus the obvious Baby Dodds and Max Roach references. I ended up with a bunch of roughly pre-conceived pieces putting free improv vocabulary into… song forms? Well, at least let’s say there were moments while preparing this CD when I thought I’d love to be able to create songs with my drumming ideas. No overdubbing except in track 1.
