inkplaces is comprised of a collection of movements that focus on the microscopic textures within a sound. movements 2-6 are largely derived from improvisations with a max/msp patch i created and field recordings from the los angeles area. they are sculptures of tones, noise, and silence, deconstructed; chopped into bits, moved in and out of themselves – largely representing the process of granular synthesis, but on a larger scale. throughout these movements there is a reoccurring lace of pink noise, filtered by analysis data from the waveform of a field recording used several times throughout the work. the motion of this sound represents reality outside of human perception. the outer movements (1&7) serve as bookends to the sounds that take place during the piece – a prolog and an epilog residing within the boundaries of human perception. i imagine the music between to take place within the time of its bookends, as if it only stands as a daydream of the chaotic universe outside of human perception. -a.y.
