“Sound Window” . Call for works . Sherbrooke, Canada

Sound Window

EIM is a biennial media arts festival produced by Sporobole – Centre en arts actuels in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Since the previous edition in 2011, EIM has maintained a more intensive presence in public spaces by means of digital works presented in downtown Sherbrooke. For a part of the program devoted to sound art, we invite artists to submit projects for the “Sound Window”, a sound platform consisting of 16 speakers above the sidewalk in front of Sporobole. EIM 2013 will coincide with the Canada Games in Sherbrooke. EIM is supported by Sherbrooke City and Quebec Art Council.

=== Sound Art/ Public Spaces ===

During the EIM festival, the “Sound Art/Public Spaces” program will take up questions and engage cultures concerning the roles, functions and meanings of sound in public and social spaces, in relation and comparison with the realm of private sounds. In particular, it will address the boundaries between these two cultural constructs. More specifically, the event will potentially raise questions and highlight practices underlying the breaching of disciplinary boundaries between music, in particular ambient music in public spaces, and sound art practices.

=== Submitting a proposal to the “Sound Window” project ===

Proposals should be submitted electronically to this e-mail address: vitrinesonore@espaceimmedia.org.

Proposals should be accompanied by an on-line registration form available athttps://vitrinesonoreeim2013.wufoo.com/forms/call-for-works-vitrine-sonore-eim2013/

The submission deadline is 28 February 2013 at midnight.

Every proposal will be considered. Depending on the final budget, however, it may be more difficult to reimburse transportation costs for artists not residing in Quebec or Canada. Every non-Canadian artist who is eligible for travel grants in his or her home country should mention this in their submission. If an artist in this situation is invited to the event EIM will provide a letter to support their request for travel funds.

Artists invited to participate in the event will receive an honorarium of $1,000 CAD, a production grant of $1,000 CAD and travel funds up to $400 CAD. These are approximate amounts and may change. Artists must produce a part of their work during their brief residency in 2013 in Sporobole’s new studios.

Proposals will be evaluated according to the extent the artist’s approach, proposal and practice fit with the guiding principles of the presentation platform described above. Emerging, mid-career and established artists are all invited to submit a proposal. Even though the call for submissions concerns sound art, proposals by artists in other disciplines who wish to benefit from this context to work in sound will also be considered.

Proposals must include the following documents:
1. The on-line form for submitting the completed proposal;
2. A summary of the proposal (200 words maximum);
3. A detailed proposal (optional);
4. The artist’s biography and an artist’s statement;
5. The artist’s curriculum vitae;
6. Supporting material (images, video and audio) and description of the supporting material (see instructions below).

All these files must be assembled in a compressed file (zip or other) named as follows: lastname_firstname_EIM2013_vitrine_sonore.zip. For larger audio and video files, artists are invited to submit links to their content on line (on Vimeo, YouTube, Soundcloud, etc.). The names and kinds of files must be Windows compatible. In addition, the names of the files must not include a space. Any incomplete or incompatible submission will not be considered. The maximum size of a submission by e-mail is 10Mo.

It is also possible to submit a proposal by post (the postage must be cancelled before the submission deadline). In this case, the files described above must be printed and/or recorded on DVD and then sent through the mail to the following address:

Philippe-Aubert Gauthier
