The theme of this exhibition of contemporary sound art will explore liminal space, and the

The separation caused by each of these constructs will be challenged with the works exhibited.Dates and Deadlines:

Jurors:
The Sound Through Barriers: Sound Art and Listening in Continuous Space exhibition will be
curated by C. Reider as an independent study project in Curatorial Practice, within the Museum and
Gallery Studies sequence, offered through Front Range Community College, Fort Collins, Colorado.
This program of study explores the role of museums in the 21st Century. During the project,
students visit major museums and collections. They have opportunities to meet with curators,
directors, and are steeped in museum philosophy and theory. As part of this program, students
organize an exhibition from theme to installation. C. Reider is a composer of experimental sound,
with a practice stretching back over twenty years.Guidelines for work:
• Size Limit: Seeking single pieces or small groupings of pieces, not installations. Pieces should
take up no more than a 5 foot by 5 foot space, no more than 6 foot tall.
• Media: Any media, able to be floor, cabinet or wall mounted
• Weight limit: 200 lbs.
• Work must be ready to hang, or with simple, clear assembly instructions.
• All work must be original
• Sound art work should use sounds that are arhythmic, non-melodic/non-harmonic and non-narrative
(i.e. no speech). The curatorial focus is on natural and abstracted sound.
• Works should have an interactive element, interactive with the listener-viewer and/or with the
surrounding environment (local or otherwise).
• Works will not be isolated, sound bleed is intrinsic to the theme. Works will be selected that
function well in an environment with other sound present.
• Sound generated by the artwork may be continuous, but some preference may be given to works
which utilize silent moments.
• The sound generated by any given work should not exceed 80 decibels at peak, or have adjustable
volume so that appropriate sound levels can be set in the space.
• Sound produced by the work should primarily be accessed without the use of headphones, (i.e.
listener-viewer should be able to hear the sound aloud in the space, or via other kinds of
physical sound conduction)
