Vanavond in een speciale editie van Café Sonore kun je traditiegetrouw de Art’s Birthday 2012 meemaken, een viering ter nagedachtenis aan de Franse Fluxus kunstenaar Robert Filliou, die op op 17 januari 1963 verklaarde dat 1 miljoen jaar geleden iemand een droge spons in een emmer met water gooide. Dit moment markeert volgens Filliou de geboorte van de kunst.
Fluxus is de kunststroming met een hoop serieuze en minder serieuze gekkigheid. Zeker in de roemruchte zestiger jaren was de fluxus beweging een belangrijke kunststroming, die heilige huisjes omver wierp en het experiment in alle gradaties exploiteerde. Hoe dan ook: Tien jaar later, in 1973, vond de eerste echte viering plaats. Toen vierde Filliou dus de 1 miljoen en tiende verjaardag van de Kunst. Dat gebeurde in de Neue Galerie in Aachen. Filliou stierf in 1987, maar verschillende kunstenaars hielden het gebruik van “La Fête Permanente” zoals Filliou het zelf omschreef, in ere door de verjaardagsviering van de Kunst voort te zetten in de vorm van mail art, faxmail en slow scan televisie. Een soort internetkunst avant la lettre.

De Internationale Ars Acustica Groep van de EBU organiseert ter ere van deze Art’s Birthday Party al meerdere jaren e

en grootscheeps radio evenement. De publieke omroepen uit Europa, maar ook onafhankelijke radiozenders van over de hele wereld verzorgen vanavond een 4 uur durend radio evenement, dat via twee satellieten door iedere omroep uit de ether geplukt kan worden. In al die diverse radiostudio’s zitten op 17 januari artiesten, musici en geluidskunstenaars om live akoestische cadeautjes de ether in te sturen. Iedere omroep heeft een stukje tijd toebedeelt gekregen op een van de satellieten zodat die cadeautjes overal te horen zijn.  Haydn en Liszt, dat zijn de prozaïsche namen van deze satellieten. Je kunt dus direct luisteren naar de permanente streams. Het geluidskunst feestje begint op beide satellieten om acht uur en duurt tot middernacht.

Uiteraard zijn wij, de VPRO, met Café Sonore, ook dit jaar, op deze 1 miljoen en negenenveertigste verjaardag van de kunst, weer van de partij met een bijzonder akoestisch cadeautje. (Niet live op Radio 6, maar wel live op het Radio4 thema kanaal Eigentijds.)
Deze  Café Sonore special begint om 20.00 uur en duurt tot tien over negen. Exact om 20.40 uur begint de live performance van het geluidskunstenaars trio Daisy Bell en dat zijn Evelien van den Broek, Dyane Donck and Richard van Kruysdijk. Speciaal voor Art’s Birthday 2012 voeren zij de performance “Proverbs of Hell” uit, Poëzie van William Blake uitgevoerd met stem en  live electronics.

Daisy Bell – Proverbs of Hell

Shifting between musique concrète and glitchy popsongs, Daisy Bell invokes an obscure atmosphere with warped voices and raw electronic beats. Daisy Bell was the first song performed by an IBM computer generated voice in 1961.
The Dutch trio Daisy Bell was founded in 2011 and consists of Evelien van den Broek, Dyane Donck and Richard van Kruysdijk. They share a background in performing, producing and composing for the stage, installation and multidisciplinary art, film, theatre and dance. Proverbs of Hell is their first release. This limited vinyl-only album is released by WORM in January 2012, and will be premiered live during the Art’s Birthday radio broadcast in the Dutch VPRO studio.

Dyane Donck

Dyane studied graphics and monumental art at the St. Joost Academy of Fine Arts in Breda, the Netherlands, and played bass guitar and sung in various bands. After discovering graphic music scores, she enrolled in music technology (composition and electronic music) at the Utrecht School of the Arts in Hilversum, where she graduated with an MA in 2000. She has since been primarily interested in sound and the inherent musical properties of sound. Donck acquired her interest in soundscapes at the Centre of Electronic Music Amsterdam, where she worked for almost 10 years and where she co-founded the Children’s Composing Workshop. Beside her compositions, Donck  produces and often collaborates with colleagues in other disciplines – with video artist Jake de Vos for instance she made interactive sound installations for several years. In recent years she had increasingly been combining ‘tape’ and electronics with acoustic instruments.

Evelien van den Broek

Evelien van den Broek is a composer and performer who studied Film & Television at the University of Amsterdam and

Music & Technology at the Utrecht School of Arts. She composes for various media and makes soundperformances and installations with instruments, objects and electronics. As a singer she has performed several new works for voice and live electronics. A fascination for a specific sound or an unusual instrument is often the inspiration for her to make something new.
Evelien wrote filmmusic for the documentary L.A. Raeven and .tibbaR, a short documentary that received the Dutch Golden Calf as well as several international awards. With choreographer Eva Baumann she worked on two solo dance performances and the composition research project Chimera. Evelien has composed for theatre by Anne Karin ten Bosch and Sanja Mitrovic. She sang in Oproer 1783 (musictheatre) and in Het Nokia Offer (ensemble, tape and video). Works for the stage include Wiegelied (music box & electronics), Tanto de Nada (voice & electronics with duo bang.grab.stutter.) and Mr. Skylight & Mr. Mob (bicyclehorns, megaphones & electronics with collective In Modo Plastico). Since 2011 she composes and performs adventurous popsongs with voice and live electronics in trio Daisy Bell.
Her work has been presented in theatres Frascati, hetveem and the Melkweg (Amsterdam), Rotterdamse Schouwburg (Rotterdam), Huis aan de Werf (Utrecht), het Nederlands Film Festival (Utrecht), IDFA (Amsterdam), Korzo (The Hague), November Music (Den Bosch), Kunsthuis Syb (Beetsterzwaag), Künstlerhaus Mousonturm (Frankfurt, Germany) and Radio Svizzera Italiana (Lugano, Switzerland).

Richard van Kruysdijk
Since his first solo release in 1993, drummer / multi-instrumentalist / producer Richard van Kruysdijk (NL) has released many albums and 12″s with other group-projects as well as solo-projects. Most notable are his works with German eclectic industrial band Phallus Dei, “trip noir” duo Sonar Lodge and downtempo trio Strange Attractor. These bands brought him on many stages throughout Europe playing drums and electronics, and in studios with many famous musicians. Richard is nowadays an experienced producer with a distinct handwriting, known for his electronica / sound design skills who also creates music for films, documentaries and dance pieces. In 2000, Richard co-founded the record label Music for Speakers. Since then, Music for Speakers has reached a cult status amongst lovers of adventurous electronic music with a hint of melancholy and lust for genre defying experiment.
