In maart dit jaar was de excentrieke radiokunstenaar Xentos Fray Bentos te gast bij WORM in Rotterdam voor de productie van zijn nieuwste radiofonische compositie I Am Fly. Vanavond In de Cafe Sonore uitzending van 29 mei hoor je de Nederlandse  radiopremière van dit werk. Verder muziek van de CD Rust Fungus met Anne Laberge en Lukas Simonis en aandacht voor het werk van de Berlijnse componist Florian Wittenberg.

Xentos Fray Bentos
Bentos is bekender onder een van zijn vele pseudoniemen (Jim Marsh, L.Voag, Harmon Y Phraisier, Amos, etc.). Jarenlang produceerde hij een hoorspelserie bij het legendarische Radio Resonance FM in Londen. I Am Fly is vooral een auditieve meditatie zonder centraal thema, gebaseerd op snaps en bites van enerzijds toevallig waargenomen realiteit (willekeurige conversatie en berichten) en anderzijds georganiseerde realiteit (verhalen op TV, in boeken en  ‘Storytelling’). Bentos zegt er zelf het volgende over:
“As for the play, hee hee hee – there’s deliberately not a central theme.  It’s partly a meditation on narrative using reality as experienced (snatches of conversation, confused (anal – ha ha) messages, momentary images) verses organised reality (the narratives of TV, books, storytelling). But lots of other mind warp shit as well.
I’m currently writing a radio play based on the life of the artist Paula Rego which I’m hoping to sell to the English language division of V6AK Radio Chuuk of the Federated States of Micronesia. Also, that I’m halfway through the ‘2 Square Why’ project – an album of Masonic Corporate rock songs which sing the joys of freemasonry.”

Aan dit hoorspel werkte zo ongeveer de complete WORM crew mee. Maarliefst 19 karakters passeren de revue. Zo is er Professor Jacobus en professor Verwoerd, Dorkus de Shamaan, Vader Abraham en nog vele andere types. Het stuk is vooral een onvervalst ouderwets hoorspel met anekdotische sketches en typische hoorspel geluidjes. En door het Rotterdamse steenkolen Engels van de vele stemmen krijgt het werk ook een gimmickachtige sfeer die wel toevertrouwd is aan WORM.

Florian Wittenburg
Florian werd geboren in Berlijn in 1973, studeerde muziektechnologie aan de HKU, waar hij werkte met o.a. Jannie Pranger, Jasper van’t Hof, Frank van der Weij en Barbara Woof. In 2000 ontving hij de Master titel voor Sound & Music producties. Ook werkte hij in het Centre de Creation Musicale van Iannis Xenakis in Parijs. Momenteel is als interface designer hij verbonden aan het Max Planck instituut voor Psycholinguistiek in Nijmegen. En het is niet zo vreemd dat hij als componist zeer gefascineerd is door de menselijke stem.
