In de Café Sonore uitzending van 8 mei 2011 hoor je een portret van de Ierse gitarist en geluidskunstenaar David Cunningham, die op 15 april dit jaar een concert gaf in Rotterdam, in het GRRR Jamming Squeak project van de Italiaanse kunstenares Paola Pivi. Dit Project, geïnitieerd door Sculpture International Rotterdam, omvat een compleet uitgeruste muziek- en opnamestudio op de collsingel 63. Het is gratis toegankelijk voor iedereen die wil improviseren, samen met dierengeluiden. Het project biedt een ruime keuze aan muziekinstrumenten, opnames van honderd zelden te horen dierengeluiden, een sound proof opnameruimte, microfoons en koptelefoons, de hulp van geluidstechnici en alle benodigde apparatuur voor het opnemen; mixen en masteren van muziek. Daarnaast beschikt de studio over loungeruimtes om te luisteren en te genieten, allemaal gratis en voor niets. De enige vereiste van de studio is dat je componeert, improviseert, muziek en geluid maakt, samen met de dierengeluiden. Naast de vrije instuif van een ieder die daar wil spelen en musiceren worden ook met enige regelmaat bekende professionele artiesten uitgenodigd om daar iets speciaals te doen. Zo ook Cunningham, die 4 uur lang improviseerde met zijn gitaar en delay’s. Je hoort Cunningham over zijn jeugd, zijn eerste hit met The Flying Lizards, zijn fascinatie voor delay’s en het unieke geluid van ruimtes. Ook hoor je een fragment van dat concert van 15 april.

David Cunningham
Born 1954 in Ireland, artist and musician David Cunningham lives and works in London.  His first significant commercial success came with The Flying Lizards’ record ‘Money’, an international hit in 1979.  Since then his work has ranged from pop music to gallery installations, including work for television, film, contemporary dance, and a series of collaborations with visual artists.

Since the release of his first album ‘Grey Scale’ in 1976 he has worked as a musician and record producer, engaging with an eclectic range of people and music, from pop groups (This Heat, Palais Schaumburg) to improvisers (David Toop, Steve Beresford) to Michael Nyman’s music for Peter Greenaway’s films and work with Ute Lemper and others, most recently including singer Joanne Robertson’s first album.

Live music has involved collaboration and performances with Yasuaki Shimizu, Scanner, Panasonic, Kathy Acker, Michael Nyman, John Cage, Peter Gordon, John Greaves, Apache 61 and others.

Music for film and television has included Ken McMullen’s films ‘Zina’ and (in collaboration with Michael Giles and Jamie Muir) ‘Ghost Dance’, and a series of film and television collaborations with visual artists which has included John Latham, David Hall, Stephen Partridge, Bruce McLean and Tony Sinden.  Related work has included the production and treatment of sound for installation and broadcast artworks by Martin Creed, Cerith Wyn Evans, Susan Hiller, Amikam Toren, João Penalva, Ian Breakwell, Gillian Wearing, Thomas Demand, Brad Butler and Karen Mirza, Sam Taylor-Wood and many others.

Most recent project has been “A Lot of Pianos”, in which David Cunningham commissioned seven composers and artists (including himself) each to compose a work for multiple pianos to be performed by a large ensemble of pianists in a piano shop over the course of an evening, a unique opportunity to explore the possibilities of a large number of pianos.

David Cunningham’s installation works explore the real time experience of the acoustic qualities of a space.  Locations have included Chisenhale Gallery London (1994), Biennale of Sydney (1998), The Tate Triennial of Contemporary British Art, Tate Britain 2003, subsequent installations have included ICC Tokyo, Ikon Gallery Birmingham, Camden Arts Centre London and 1m3 Lausanne.
