KAMAMA - Audrey Chen & Luca Marini
KAMAMA in Cherokee means both elephant and butterfly. There is no overlap in meaning other than the supposed resemblance of the long trunk and flapping ears to the proboscis and wings of that insect. This duo loosely embodies elements of this kind of disparate pairing.  Luca Marini (drums/percussion) and Audrey Chen (cello/voice/electronics) combine the raw energies resultant from and continuously growing out of their respective histories and experiences. It is ecstatic music. It is contrary music. And at times, they depart completely from one another as two distinct creatures, but then are drawn back into the fold of an undeniable tenderness and comprehension.

SHELLEY HIRSCH - NYFA FELLOWSHIP

Shelley Hirsch is a critically acclaimed vocalist, composer, and storyteller whose mostly solo compositions, staged multimedia works, improvisations, radio plays, installations and collaborations have been presented all over the world. Tonight Hirsch will give a poetic demonstration of her inventive body voice language process, show video documentation of staged work which has never been seen before in the USA, and present excerpts of works in progress. This is a free event.  Shelley Hirsch is a 2010 Artist Fellowship recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). This presentation is co†sponsored by Artists & Audiences Exchange, a NYFA public program, funded with leadership support from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).

KURT RALSKE - Rediscovering German Futurist Cinema, 1920-1929
Multimedia artist Kurt Ralske’s work is created exclusively with his own custom software, written in C, Java, and Max/MSP, and involves the expressive improvisation of both sound and image, simultaneously and in real-time.  Tonight at Roulette, Kurt Ralske presents “Rediscovering German Futurist Cinema”, an odd combination of a screening, live audio-visual performance, and lecture/demonstration involving his research into the experimental films of Fritz Lang and F.W.Murnau. With the rediscovery of this little-known genre, 1920s Berlin moves forwards and backwards in time simultaneously. The price of admission to this parallel universe is only your credulity. “Through the slightest of digital interventions, these lost landmarks of early experimental cinema have been retrieved from the Akashic Record.”

MATTHEW OSTROWSKI
Matthew Ostrowski is a pioneer in live electronic music, having worked as a composer, improvisor and installation artist for over 20 years, exploring work with alternative controllers, multimedia, and theater. An unreconstructed formalist with a continuing interest in density of microevents and rapid change, his work has been seen in festivals on every continent except Antarctica. Tonight Ostrowski will be performing two works with the collaboration of inanimate systems: “atopia:levigation and apophenia”, an audio-visual work for live webcrawler, and “Three (out of four) States of Matter”, for a common household experience and live processing.

KAGEL NACHT - An Evening Dedicated to Composer Mauricio Kagel
German-Argentine composer Mauricio Kagel is arguably one of the most radical 20th century avant-garde composers, often incorporating bizarre, hysterical theatrics into his compositions. Kagel Nacht gathers a stacked deck of musicians from Brooklyn’s artistic multiverse, performers deeply situated in theater, performance art, classical, and experimental music worlds for an evening exploring Kagel’s diverse oeuvre, including “classical” works, electro-acoustic compositions, multi-media pieces, radio plays, and some of his most daring and hilarious works of “instrumental theater”. With interpretations ranging from strict to fully recontextualized, Kagel Nacht breathes new life into these important and underperformed works by joining them into one, multi-stage, panoramic event.
