TheLiminal . 04 Entr’acte Mix by ALLON KAYE

The issue why we record improvised music, preserving for posterity something which by definition is probably unrepeatable, is one which is inevitably slightly troubling. The packaging used by the Entr’acte label alludes to this very problem. When you cut open their vacuum-sealed packaging, something special is destroyed. As good and as cutting edge as that one-time-only performance was (and given this is Entr’acte, a lot of their output is high quality electro-acoustic improvisation and sound art), and as quickly as it is cut and captured, when you listen to it it is somehow already tainted. Given all of this, a concert put together by the Entr’acte label is as fresh as it could possibly get. Their forthcoming show at London’s Cafe Oto on 31 March has a lineup which features the sound artists Olivia Block along with Adam Sonderberg, Lee Gamble, John Wall, and Pere Ubu guitarist Keith Moliné (who by his own admission, and rather excitingly, has absolutely no idea what he is going to be doing for his set). To coincide with this, we asked Entr’acte curator, typographer, graphic designer and vacuum packer Allon Kaye to put together a mix which showcases these artists, including a number of as yet unreleased tracks from future Entr’acte albums and elsewhere. I’m looking forward to breaking the (digital) seal on this…
